Well this is refreshing. I seem to have stumbled upon grown ups, it's like the old days when the person you were talking to was within reach. I was brought here by accident so probably won't be back but just wanted to say thanks,. Its a lovely little oasis you have here in the comments
As a card guy for 10 years, I found it super difficult to make the transition to coin magic. From the sleights to pantomiming. That all changed when I picked up a Coin Box. To me the Box acts sort of like a deck of cards where putting a coin into the box feels almost like losing a playing card into the deck. The added layer misdirection made me more confident with my sleights and audience management. I know box work is a completely different school of coin magic but it's something I highly recommend checking it out!
Would definitely recommend Craig petty's Alakazam coin magic Day 1 & Day 2... He goes over the basic from a total beginner sleights and basic vanishes... Do check it
Steve Faulkner just updated his online course that has an entire coin course taking you from basic to pro. I highly recommend his online course it is a great value if not THE greatest value in magic teaching.
I’m brand new into coin magic (I know the very basics), and I purchased charming Chinese challenge and it definitely was a great introductory as well and was a great way for me to dip my toes into it all. Thanks for the great advice and recommendations David!
GREAT REVIEW! Definitely a saver! I met Roth about 35 years ago... RIP. Have his book, Bobo's and Coin Magic. I'll take a look at the other two. Been watching you every day for several years now. Thanks for putting in the work. By the way Double Deception and Escapist Coins are my favorite gaffed/gimmicked coin tricks.
Benjamin Earl has "Deep Coin Work" in his deep seminars. It's 6 hours and gives a great overview and some of his most famous coin effects, many of which are pretty easy. If you wait for a sale it's an especially good deal. This is more for someone who already knows cards and wants to get into coins though.
The best videos out there are the Eric Jones Metal series. He's one of the best coin magicians out there. It starts with simple palming and moves up from there.
@@magicorthodoxy I've had the pleasure to get to know him. He's even FaceTimed with me to give me advice on palming. Such a great guy! His Metal series has been the most effective lessons for me
Good pieces of advice ! I would add a half-dollar size Chinese coin + a YES/NO dollar size coin. Of course there are other gaffs... But tricks with apparently borrowed coins are my favourites. I recently bought the FIT gimmick from Paul Carnazzo and I love it !
For choosing coins it's tough. Growing up in Canada in the 80s it was hard to find coins .Canadian Silver dollars were best. Now I use Twoonies (. $2 coins ), they are a bit small but have you ever tried to borrow a Kennedy I/2 dollar from a spectator ?
I started with Bobos myself, but if you're not a book person there are some videos out there that are great for learning. For beginners, Eric Jones first Metal DVD is a great place to start. David Roth's Expert Coin Magic Made Easy volume 1 is also a great place for Coin magic beginners.
I do basically 0 coin magic BUT I have a super triple coin by Johnny wong and it's usually my go to if someone wants to see just 1 trick. It's fast, self contained, modular, and instant resets. I know I can't handle difficult sleights and passes but this allows me to feel like I can. If you don't do coins but want to add a little variety that's my recommendation!
I started with Bobo’s and I don’t disagree that it may not be the best for an absolute beginner. Roth’s Expert Coin Magic is a great resource. Mark Wilson’s is a great resource in general. So much money magic, but so much every other type too. I’d also recommend Eric Jones Metal 1 for an absolute beginner. That is possibly my #1 recommendation. I started with that right after Bobo’s and still love showing the coins across and 3fly from that download.
I regularly carry Double deception and Split focus. These coins aren't cheap but they make me look like a weapon. I used them yesterday roving for 1600 kids and they were amazed.
I definitely recommend David Roth’s first series. Also Eric Jones “Metal” series 1-3. Both those series are amazing. (And David Roth’s foundations are so good for all other coin magic in my opinion. Can’t recommend his book “Expert Coin Magic” but his videos make the book come to life).
Thank-you for this video! It was very informative and exactly the information I was looking for. I find all your videos informative and fun to watch. Keep up the great work!!
I broke my hand at the Del Mar fair years ago the troupe refused to rehearse and dropped me on the mount of my giraffe. That ended about three or four years of my serious practice and broke my wrist a few years later. Both never were set so I have pretty limited mobility. Gaffs are great but wish I hadn’t relied so heavy on gimmicks and learned to get over the trauma and make the sleights work. When there’s a master purest on the pitch, people take note and drop them likewise. Cellini knew the advantages of traveling light, wish I did. Smilesotheylikeyou
For someone starting out with coin gaffs, I would recommend Sucker Punch by Mark Southworth. It runs about $40 but it comes with a whole set of Poker Chips that are basic coin gaffs you would spend hundreds of dollars on and the video is taught by Eric Jones. Yes the Poker chips are kind of cheap but they are perfect for practice and if you get serious, you will have an idea which gaffs you will want to spend your money on.
Bobo was how I started but it was completely unintentional. I was at my very first Magic Convention and there was an auction, I put in a bid on a box of books and I won. It had an old hard cover of Bobo and Close up Card Magic by the one and only Harry Lorayne (which I later got him to sign when I ran into him at Tannens) I was still very much a beginner and the HL book at the time was far beyond my skill set. I still have and cherish both. I think another great book on sleights for beginners is Now you See it, Now you dont by Bill Tarr. Sponge Balls are also a great intro to coin magic. A great way to practice with slightly cheaper gaffs is Sucker Punch by Mark Southworth, it has a few of the same gaffs and some great effects. Some great recommendations sin this video, thanks as always!
That Bill Tarr book was my first magic book back in the 80s. I was a master of cigarette magic at 12 years old. Still the book I recommend for beginners
Now You See It, Now You Don't 1 and 2 are great sources. I also highly recommend The Magic Book by Harry Lorayne. It has some wonderful coin routines in it's pages. And also Daryl's 3 Fly is great (as is all his stuff).
Awesome video with great advice and recommendations! Some of my go to coin tricks (gafs) that I always have on me are FIT by paul carnazzo, hole 3.0 by ted bogusta, and a triple split coin (unbranded). Blackbird by jeff copeland is a sneaky way of producing a coin as well. Thanks for another great video as they are always appreciated!
Just pulled my blackbird out after years it really got me playing with coins after my I hand injury’s like a decade or more again. I have fit but it doesn’t fit my rings wish they’d make it in a fifty that would work with Garret Thomas kits. Lost my super triple split with my banded gimmicks stuck to a bench. Really like what Holcomb and Copeland have done for the industry.
I will recommend four Morgan dollars, 4 Kennedy dollars, four dimes, and four pennies who he starting with coin magic it is much easier to practice the slides with the Morgan dollar and then try to duplicate on the half a dollar and then on the quarter
For video, The Metal series is the New New Expert Coin Magic. Eric Jones's teaching is clear and concise and what you get is the modern state of play in the realm of coin magic. Another hearty recommendation for the work of brother Danny Goldsmith. That kid is brilliant. Most of his commercial products are intermediate to advanced but his site also offers access to some good clear beginner teaching. Books Expert Coin Magic, Kaufman's if you can spare a kidney, Rubinstein's new book Coin Magic (this last also doubling as a self defense weapon/weight lifting implement). I think that Bobo's at this point is more of a reference book. A lot of stuff in there has just been outmoded by better methods available in the books I referenced. No disrespect to Maestro Bobo. Also check out Jeff Copeland's site for teaching and props. His shells are excellent (they are for a very nice round that he also sells) and his coin boxes are the business. Excellent video as always.
@@magicorthodoxy Aww...you're making me blush. Seriously I wish they would re-release Kaufman's as a e-pub/pdf if nothing else. If someone were to give it the Close treatment (e-pub with embedded/linked video) they would be worthy of enshrinement. Kaufman is still alive isn't he?
Hi David, thanks for your information for coins magic start up. I am also a newbie in coin magic. For beginner what type of coins are suitable for performing coin magic ? Morgan coins or half Dollars. Where can we get ?
these are good for practice www.amazon.com/Morgan-Dollar-Accessories-Appearing-Disappearing/dp/B07Q2FYBYJ/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1XKHUYIJB1XJ&keywords=WSNMING+10+Pcs+Steel+Morgan+Dollar&qid=1649988144&sprefix=wsnming+10+pcs+steel+morgan+dollar+%2Caps%2C61&sr=8-1
I don't suppose there's a link that would show where on Penguin Magic you can actually buy good beginner coins? It's a bit confusing what ones are just tricks, or which are actual coins to buy.
Eric Jones has an amaizing coin magic DVD set. It's got all the classic tricks as well as some of his really innovative moves and skills. It's a collection of DVDs that gradually get more difficult. I loved it. Kainoa has some really great tricks too, but definitely not for beginners. But he really takes coin magic to another level!

David.
I appreciate your sharing the knowledge you have. Helps me a lot
I started coin magic with 4 silver Kennedy's and learned from David Stone Basic Coin Magic. His classic palm and wipe clean is the best I seen.
NICE !!!

Great info as always David. I would have included a C/S coin in the gaff list. I use mine a lot and it's a real fooler.
dont they usually come with a S&S set?
@@magicorthodoxy not sure about that, maybe so.
Mark Wilson's Book is the place to start. For gaffed coins you gotta include Copper, Silver, Brass (CSB) coins or 2 Copper, 1 Silver coins.
