Through his science of genetic manipulation, he gave himself powers, but he ain't a mutant. And for Madelyne: her mutant name, Goblyn Queen, makes in the series no sense. In the comics, during the event "Inferno", she controlled demons from hell and let them invade New York City. When Sinister switched Jean with Madelyne, won't be revealed in the series, but it defently was some time after season 3 of the original series.
