Some clarification on this from a former vet tech: The goal of “dummy eggs” is to stop the bird laying. Stopping them laying reduces egg binding risk. It is excessive laying which predisposes birds to egg binding. The more they lay the more they deplete the minerals needed for strong shells, the more inflammation builds up in the reproductive tract, and the more they exhaust the muscles involved in laying. At some point you will get an egg that gets stuck because it’s too soft, too rough, or too mis-shappen to be expelled, or because the bird has too much internal damage to be able to lay even a perfectly fine egg. If you see egg binding develop after introducing dummy eggs that’s a good sign that they were introduced after the bird had already been laying too long, or was not in good condition to be laying in the first place. The dummy eggs didn’t cause the egg binding. They simply weren’t able to stop laying before the egg binding occurred.
@@adamg4336with chickens you wouldn’t. The whole goal is to get more eggs. Dummy eggs are used in exotic birds because they haven’t been bred for hundreds of years to be able to lay almost constantly. Once it's safe for your hens to hatch eggs again, maybe try giving Peanut some Muscovy duck eggs to hatch. They're a large, non-quacking Russian duck breed, super good layers, good brooders as well, and good foragers/grazers. My family owns several, and we now have less bugs thx to them.
I was thinking about giving her jersey giant eggs, but I have to order 6 months ahead. Muscovy ducks sounds fun, but i found that having a hen raise a duck is not great for their health, so if I did that she probably couldn’t keep her ducks with her for long.

Very!
Always found it cute how they carefully nudge eggs ping pong/golf balls under there. Video made me giggle
She’s very protective of her eggs, and she accepts any new eggs. Next year I can hopefully let her hatch more chicks.
“So I do have to take her balls away”
-Joseph
She looks so softn fluffy😊❤😊❤😊
i swear, barred rocks can be the most broody chickens 😂 we have 4 and the other morning they were squawking for half an hour!
Your chickens are well cared for ❤️
“Sadly i gotta take her balls away” 😂❤ Amazing
I love to see your dog playing with tennis balls
Such a good mummy ❣️
Once it's safe for your hens to hatch eggs again, maybe try giving Peanut some Muscovy duck eggs to hatch. They're a large, non-quacking Russian duck breed, super good layers, good brooders as well, and good foragers/grazers. My family owns several, and we now have less bugs thx to them.
I was thinking about giving her jersey giant eggs, but I have to order 6 months ahead. Muscovy ducks sounds fun, but i found that having a hen raise a duck is not great for their health, so if I did that she probably couldn’t keep her ducks with her for long.
They are from Latin America, not Russia
She wondering that these eggs 🥚 are mine.. 😂😂🤣😜
I love how gently she pushes them under her body ❤️
So much fowl language! 😂
It's soooo adorable
That's what a spa day will get you😊
The risk you take when you go to the spa 😂. I walk back to an empty wallet
You should give her a fertilized egg she’d be such a good mom
She hatched 8 silkies last year, and she is an amazing mom. But we have had a lot of predator attacks recently and it’s too dangerous to let her hatch any eggs. I will let her hatch some next year, I was thinking Jersey giants.
Ping pong is actually formally called "table tennis" like in the Olympics, so technically they are tennis balls 👌👍
Table tennis balls
I would suggest you get her own set of ping pong balls. Replace the eggs you take with the same number of ping pong balls, so she doesn't feel bad. She obviously has a very strong motherly instinct.
Barred rock hens are the best..I raised one in Arizona and it would follow you around and wait for you to grab desert crickets..it woukd eat every one you put in front of her..she was so funny.
So cute! My hens are like that too, they come running towards me when they hear me coming down to the coop, and then they follow me around hoping to get treats. I give them corn, berries, worms, and anything else I can get my hands on.
Fill the nest box with eggs when she leaves
It would be interesting to see how many eggs she would be willing to take.
@@JosephsDesignyea
@@JosephsDesign I still think it's mean to screw with her like that. Either break her broodiness or let her hatch at least one egg.
@@WobblesandBean I have tried breaking her brood with a broody box already, and she becomes broody again after only a few weeks. She is very hormonal and has been broody 4 times this year. I also can’t let her hatch because of predators in my area, so it’s not safe right now for her to have chicks. It’s also getting late in the year and chicks might risk freezing if they hatch any later in the year. I have some ideas to break her brood while keeping her safe, but right now I need to work on putting up a wire roof on my chicken run so they can be safe from the ravens that killed 7 of my chickens.
@@JosephsDesignQuote the raven “Tasty bird.” 😂 I didn’t know they could take on full sized chickens tbh. Impressive, albeit somewhat terrifying, animals ravens.
What a good momma!!
“Tennis balls” dude those are PING PONG BALLS
She's not broody, she's just a loving protective mama ❤
Maybe try and see if she would accept different fruits, like an apple or orange😂
A mandarin and a banana would be nice, and they would be protected by their peels and still potentially edible
@@JosephsDesign give her ostrich egg
Many people want me to give her a comically large egg. The closest I can offer you are some geese eggs, so I am definitely curious if she would accept them.
@@JosephsDesign Key Limes are perfectly round and the size of golf balls. The ideal chicken fruit
@@CharlieApples ooh, yes, I like the idea of limes.
You mean table tennis?😂
I would usually call them ping pong balls, but the packaging says table tennis, so tennis balls they are!
Haha 😂 yea
@@JosephsDesignno there still ping pong balls
What a good momma hen
Bro has 8 balls now
I think you should break her brood, since it's not likely she will set. They are an amazing breed, but not great at everything. It's ok, they're not all setters.
Plastic Easter eggs? It would be interesting to see if the colors make a difference. ❤
I wonder if it’s shape, or colour. Could be a fun experiment to get different shapes and colors
My hens love them! I put treats inside though. ❤️
What a cute Plymouth rock chicken ❤
Ok, well I suppose it is called table tennis. I'll give you that one.😅
Let her keep one or two of her own eggs.😊❤
Food
They might not be fertilized. If they aren't, they'll never hatch, and just become stinky rotten eggs.
If they're unfertilized they will just rot and can potentially explode under pressure
Edit- originally said underutilized instead of unfertilized
@@bittercharmer1591Well if you think about it an unfertilized egg could be considered underutilized too. 🤔
Saw another comment where he stated she's raised some in the past and will again in the future but rn there's issues with predators.
This is precious
Mrs Peanut is adorable, a big hug for her❤
Try plastic easter eggs it will help your hens lay more eggs.
“Sadly I can’t let her keep them, so I do have to take her balls away” is so funny out of context, also she looked terrified of that duck toy
Give her a bakugan
Lots of requests for this, but I sadly don’t have any
it would be funny if you gave her a really big egg like a ostrage or a kiwi
I have some expiring goose eggs I could try with, chickens tend to fear eggs that large
Your hens is just like our hens
Thats a very pleasant hen😊
Why did you take the chicken's balls away??? 🥺🥺🥺
Uuummm, ping pong balls hun.
It’s also called table tennis, hun 🫢
His guy had never played tennis in their life.
Oh that was mean, taken away her tennis balls, poor baby.....lol
Give her some of her eggs back so she doesn’t feel like such a failure of a mother for the rest of her life.
I have to collect her eggs every day because I sell them. I cannot let her hatch any eggs this year because of predators, but I let her hatch last year and will let her hatch again next year when it’s safer.
@@JosephsDesign I wasn’t trying to be an ass btw, i was more saying it in a humorous manor because you gave her the balls lol
Its all good, I always try to interpret things as questions or jokes before insults. Life’s a lot better when you do that. She is a great mother and looks so happy when she has chicks to protect, but as I said, now is a bad time for that.
@@JosephsDesign Yeah man you know a lot more than I do, seems like you really care about them. Also, I re read my comment and it read out kind of douchey so yah I wanted to let you know lol
@@JosephsDesign can you try giving her quail eggs? Or fill her nest with her eggs?
Give her a rock that is white.
I can try and this
Nhìn bé Gà này đẩy quả trứng vào trong bụng để ấp thấy cưng
i love your chickens! They look so fluffy
Thank you! 😊 And they are super fluffy!
Give her ur mom
Counter offer, what if I gave her your mom instead?
Why cant she keep them????
I want her to stop being broody so I have to take everything away
@@JosephsDesignohhhh
I bought a pack of fake eggs to help direct them to a particular nest, and now everytime i take eggs from under a hen, i put a couple in front of her
I get to watch her cutely tuck them under her, and she gets to sit on eggs. Win win
So adorable 😍🥰
lmfao didn't expect to find humor in this but seeing her take in those and tuck it under her the same each time was super cute and funny. I love animals.
Cute broody hen
Awww ❤ she’s pretty
LOL! Well played!!!! Calling them tennis balls got you a million comments! 😂😂😂😂😂
