Vanda Jensen same for mebut also applies mission impossible and the man from uncle both of which I could hear from my bedroom whilst reading under the covers.I did get to watch the very last series in the newfangled colour TV!
Van Der Valk was another great cop show and brilliant theme tune, I used to love that show but hated the end cos you knew exactly where your next stop was, BED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
I always thought I was the only kid who had to go to bed when this theme music came on. You know what it's like! You just don't considered that some other poor kid living miles away would be enduring the same, "it's bedtime!!" torture. I'm glad to finally learn I wasn't alone. Nice to meet you. I'm from Stonebridge Pk, N.W. London. You?? My bedtime treat was falling asleep to Radio 4. 🏃♂️🛀🏿 🛏.🎶Mum? Wot.!! It's the Clitheroe kid...
Thanks, Vanda, for a little chuckle. Nothing takes me back in time more than a piece of music. With some people a certain smell takes them back in time, but for me it has always been sounds, not necessarily music.
Ah Vanda, so many memories, never considered at the time other children were being sent bed to this music !! Always loved this theme tune and still do, thanks for the memory and a chuckle !
This theme, Dixon of DOck Green, and the original Delia Derbyshire Doctor Who theme - goosebumps, and a little tear pour aller rechereche de temps perdue.
Dare I say It , but this show inspired me to join the service. It was a different world then. Sad as I am,I have the theme on my mobile linked to the Control Room number when I'm called out.
This show and Maigret were fabulous. Then Beyond the Fringe, Helen Shapiro Tell Me What He Said, Joe Brown Picture of You and Lonnie Dunnigan Rock Island Line. I lived in London in the early 60's and these were the best of times. Well other than the Cuban Missile Crisis.
@0:55 Wow. I bet if they had known Judi Dench had been in trouble with the police she never would have been made a Dame. No wonder she changed her name to Queen Victoria.
I loved this show , I’m a huge police fan , my favourite cop was fancy smith, I remember the zephyr 6 cars with the police stop sign in roof, back then you didn’t have stab vests or automatic rifles, a whistle and a truncheon n radio that was it
Back in the 1960's cars owned by the Australian federal government had licence plates that started with a red "C" followed by 4 numbers. They eventually ran out of numbers and issued new plates of 3 letters, 3 numbers. The first letter was a red "Z". Guess what the cars became known as. Yes, Z CARS! Still have those plates today, still called Z Cars.
Wonderfully evocative theme to a programme that broke new ground in Cop shoes. A million miles from "Dixon of Dock Green", the programme showed policemen & women as human & falible. The very early episodes were performed live.
+fergysafc123 No it wasn't. It's always been Evertons. The song is called Johny Todd an old Liverpool folk song. The series is also about Liverpool. What the hell as Sunderland got to do with this?
Z Cars sounds a bit like a Gerry Anderson series-- "Z Car One! Ready to deploy!" "Z Car One! Deploy away! Z Car 2--Stand By!" "Z Car Two! Standing By!"
Long ago about 50 years I read a story where some villains were about to start a job and Stratford Johns pulls up to a venue in his car. One of the said villains cried out "_It's Barlow, scarper lads_" and they ran off in different directions. Larger in life.
From what I have read, you might be the only person to do so. Apparently he is a prick to work with and has a definate superiority complex to the point of abuse.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the expression on your tod. Is it because poor Johnny was on his own at the end or is it that you're alone like a copper on the beat?
When I watched this in the 60s I had no idea how primitive we were! It looks like it was filmed with a Box Brownie and broadcast with a torch on a bedsheet.
Forget Judi Dench...........Brian Blessed shaved and sober, now that's nostalgia
Oh my god, what a tune, takes me back to childhood in Ossett West Yorkshire watching these episodes.
Devon, Dartmoor for me.
My late date was from Ossett before moving to Peterborough in 1945 Great days great tv program.
Always loved this piece of music even though it usually meant "It's time for you to have a bath and get ready for bed."
Vanda Jensen same for mebut also applies mission impossible and the man from uncle both of which I could hear from my bedroom whilst reading under the covers.I did get to watch the very last series in the newfangled colour TV!

I can't imagine Everton without zcars. The best.
Watford vs Norwich brings me here..
I can’t imagine Watford FC without the Z cars too.
I'm an Everton Fan and have this as my ringtone on my phone
That takes me back a few years. I never realised that Judi Dench was in Z Cars till I saw the titles roll!
Absolutely fantastic the original cop show Brian blessed so young 😆
sad to say Frank Windsor has passed away today 2/10/2020. Another legend gone.
Rest Well, Detective Sergeant Watt, and Frank Windsor, for you have both earned it, many times over.
A most rousing signature tune which stirs memories of my childhood.
I used To watch this series as a kid In the sixties. In Finland it was called " radio patrol".
One of the great TV themes.
Brian Blessed, Judi Dench!!
Also, the tune is a traditional Liverpool sailer's song called 'Johnny Todd'.
Also very similar to the hymn "Father hear the prayer we offer"
This theme, Dixon of DOck Green, and the original Delia Derbyshire Doctor Who theme - goosebumps, and a little tear pour aller rechereche de temps perdue.
I always remember this tune as a very young kid, watching the show before going to bed. Was very saddened when it ended.
Dare I say It , but this show inspired me to join the service. It was a different world then.
Sad as I am,I have the theme on my mobile linked to the Control Room number when I'm called out.
That was wonderful. brought back memories. Oh we were all younger then. thanks for posting.
I still get goosebumps hearing Z-cars, some 53 years later after EFC started playing it in our title winning 1962/63 season!
Bit before my time. But if the Toffees have so much good taste, count me in!
Look at us now its pitiful and heartbreaking

Remember this song as a child. Never understand the program. My dad used to watch it. Nice theme
My favourite TV theme tune of all time!
@0:55 Wow. I bet if they had known Judi Dench had been in trouble with the police she never would have been made a Dame. No wonder she changed her name to Queen Victoria.

@@MaggieTheCat01 Very much underrated. Hilarious

A few nights in New Town nick and she's a reformed character.
M
I knew it was nearly time for bed whenever I heard this....
Johny Todd left his love behind him walking on the Liverpool sands.
I loved this show , I’m a huge police fan , my favourite cop was fancy smith, I remember the zephyr 6 cars with the police stop sign in roof, back then you didn’t have stab vests or automatic rifles, a whistle and a truncheon n radio that was it
i remember seeing repeats of this when i was a kid with frank windsor stratford johns and brian blessed and the follow up series too softley softley
MANY thanks for this slice of TV history. Bye, bye Dixon, hello real coppers.
0:41 - Judi Dench, teenage delinquent. I love it.
this takes me back!
I really fancied Fancy Smith when I was a little girl. Good old Brian Blessed he was amazing as Porthos the Three musketeers too.
Just picked the single up of this from 1962 👍

If I remember it was all live. Great actors and tv.
My dad patrolled in these cars in the 1960s
great memories - John Watt, Fancy Smith, Charlie Barlow and Jock Lynch - Magic !!
It was Jock Weir, wasn't it? I believe Bert Lynch was a sergeant.

footscorn The players came out of the tunnel to it until 1997
Some amazing actors on TV back then. Then it went to multi channel and the talent got very diluted
Judi Dench!!! BRIAN BLESSSEEED!!!!
Crikey - two Oscar winners in that episode! Judi Dench and Colin Welland.
Z Cars sounds a bit like a Gerry Anderson series--
"Z Car One! Ready to deploy!"
"Z Car One! Deploy away! Z Car 2--Stand By!"
"Z Car Two! Standing By!"
01:49 I love that dropped flute part

I’m a Liverpool fan and I’m fucking pissing myself laughing
*We’re gonna win the league*

The best bit in this theme, is when it turns into Carry On film style music with the sax.
Z cars, Dixon Of Dock Green, Softly Softly..............growing up was good then.
Classic theme 👌
Love this tune sooooooo much, reminds me of when used to play it with Dad, great times
Say nothing until you see your solicitor Judy !

Long ago about 50 years I read a story where some villains were about to start a job and Stratford Johns pulls up to a venue in his car. One of the said villains cried out "_It's Barlow, scarper lads_" and they ran off in different directions. Larger in life.
Beautiful
bomber brought me here
Nah Watford FC did
Michael Stone stole it from Everton
Michael Stone Watford never started playing it till 64 Everton have used it since 63
No wonder his surname is Blessed. I think Brian Blessed is really God in disguise.
From what I have read, you might be the only person to do so. Apparently he is a prick to work with and has a definate superiority complex to the point of abuse.
Great to see a young Judi Dench
Oh I like this, I like it a lot !
Come on you Blue Boys!!

Theme "Johnny Todd" euphamism to "Mr Plodd" slang for beat Police Offcer".
"Johnny Todd. on his plodd...."
I wonder if this has anything to do with the expression on your tod. Is it because poor Johnny was on his own at the end or is it that you're alone like a copper on the beat?
You know our name. Our name is Everton.
When I watched this in the 60s I had no idea how primitive we were! It looks like it was filmed with a Box Brownie and broadcast with a torch on a bedsheet.
Funny. 😂😂😂
I thought that was Dame Judi Dench - the credits proved it.
COYB!
