For mains preparation, prepare for the syllabus shared. Use the previous year question papers as guide. Also write answers keeping a timer. As you practice more, both your answer writing style and time taken will improve.
Please start with ncert books - you can have a first glance through ebooks and then purchase only those which are required. Then standard books for polity, history, geography and economy ca be purchased. Wherever possible check the ebook copy of a book, see if you can follow the author and if yes then please buy them.
For psir, use standard books like From Plato to Marx, OP Gauba's political theory, IGNOU notes, Andrew Heywood book as base reference. Also follow regular blogs of political analysts and former ambassadors to gather points for IR. Try to understand the question trend using PYQ - based on which streamline your preparation
