Role of Mast Cells in Inflammation of the Brain and Autism Spectrum Disorder Professor Theoharides

  • Background
Perinatal inflammation of the brain can lead to neurodegenerative changes especially in the amygdala and hippocampus that are essential for emotions and memory. In addition, amygdala sense fear and regulate responsive behaviors.
Focal inflammation in the amygdala and hippocampus could disrupt neuronal connectivity and lock the brain into a perpetual fight or flight mode. Such inflammation could develop as a result of activation of mast cells, typically associated with allergic reactions, but also present in the brain where they can be triggered by neuropeptides, stress and toxins leading to breach of the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) and activation of microglia.
Microglia “prune” nerve connections (synapses) during development. When activated, however, microglia disrupt neuronal connectivity, lower the fear threshold and derail emotions as seen in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In fact, many large epidemiological studies have reported a strong association between ASD and asthma or atopic dermatitis (eczema), both of which involve activated mast cells.

Superb. Thank you for posting this content-rich video re mast cell activity drivers that pertain to brain-related functions and critical downstream systemic impacts.

Thank you sooo much for all your extensive research on Mast Cell Activation syndrome. I have just been diagnosed with this, have had psoriasis my entire life, non- celiac gluten sensitivity, nightshade and oranges flare the psoriasis, now also I have Long CV19 with frequent migrainous brain inflammation. This presentation very well explained to me the condition of MCAS and gives me much hope with the leutiolin (spelling?) and the other more effective flavanoid mentioned. I will share this video with my doctor. Thank you for searching and being a healer for society's recent disease syndromes!

Are these slides available somewhere for viewing? The detail is indistinct when I got to full screen, and I'm finding this incredibly useful. I believe that families of people with autism are riddled with inflammatory conditions, most of which have some of the hallmarks of mast cell activation.
