“Don’t mistake salt for sugar. If he wants to be with you he will.” Is this supposed to be poetry?? I don’t understand why people praise her work so much. This is the type of stuff I posted on tumblr when I was 15 and thought I was so talented. I’m guessing this resonates with those kind of girls.
@@michellea5146 Women supporting women means supporting women in things they are putting work into, and are talented in. These are good concepts but they aren't poetry, they're simple statements with line breaks and she COULD make actual, well written, good poetry but she doesn't. We should support women, absolutely, 100%, but we shouldn't support women just because they're women.
@@roryisabellla2598 who are you to judge or determine how much work she puts into it or not? We should support women for putting their HEART and their ENERGY into something. It’s something they feel passionate about. You don’t get to take that away from someone. It’s horrible that you and other feel entitled to dictate what’s “worth” supporting other women in.
The utter simplicity of the topics and language that she uses in her book is what got her famous. It's accessible and makes people feel like they're intellectually advanced when they're actually just reading a series of tweets. The main audience that enjoys her book are high school students because of how simple the book is, while also managing to make people feel as though they're somehow profound for understanding it. It's an excuse for people to read something that they can finish in under half an hour, and it gives them a feeling of intellectual superiority, without actually having to stimulate their mind.
no I think she manages to express really raw emotions in ways that don't overcomplicate them, but lay them out with just the right touch of poetry. There's beauty in simplicity.
I don't see Rupi Kaur's poetry as "pseudointellectual" at all. It doesn't try to be something too complicated, what I personally like about her poems is how simple they are, in the sense that they talk about life situations in a clever way that we all understand, because we all go through them. I find her poems raw, relatable, honest, and therefore comforting and healing as well; and I believe that is her purpose. You don't have to use untintelligible language to write "good" poems, literature, and so on. You just have to be honest with yourself and put your feelings in your work, which Rupi surely does. The fact that she's popular doesn't take away her talent.
Whoever made this video and the corresponding text really didn't proofread. Caught a spelling mistake on almost every poem. Some of the words don't match what Rupi is saying either...
@yetidodger6650 if I pay $20+ for a book that is primarily filled normal sentences that don't even make use of an entire page, then I think I'd be more than a little justified to feel duped without it being jealousy. Flipping though her book yourself, you can tell she picked the longest ones on purpose. She's obviously a product of our instant gratification culture, but you can print out a song from Kendrick Lamar, like Mortal Man, and read that as an actual poem. I'd pay for a book of that and feel like there's more for me to chew on, but Milk and Honey is just blog or accessory content that got hyped up because we don't have either the time or ability to dig into things more substantial.
Stephanie Fong Hi, I'm Vaibhav Adi, I have published my first compilation of poems, Light Of Love and this book consists of 56 poems. It talks about the ups and downs in life from Love, Romance to Erotica. Unlike Rupi's which just talks about what only girls undergo. My interactions with various people of ups and downs have helped me coin this vivid book. It is on Amazon.in And also on Amazon.Com and here is the link for amazon.in - www.amazon.in/Light-Love-Vaibhav-Adi-ebook/dp/B076369YLP/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1507041294&sr=1-1&keywords=vaibhav+adi and for amazon.com -www.amazon.com/Light-Love-Vaibhav-Adi/dp/1544787146
I fail to understand how people like her poetry. Yes, she talks about important, relatable things but all her 'poems' sound like two lines out of an average spoken poem. It's not poetry. As a student of English literature, I understand free verse but you could still remove her line breaks and it would be a collection of quotes. It's really pretentious shit. I'm not trying to hate on her, of course. I'm really just trying to understand if it's as simple as relating to teenage girls all over the world through terribly constructed poetry and making millions. Although, I'm a 17 year old brown girl, as if that somehow validates my opinion.
misterMagoo4 "he asked me how i was so kind to people, milk and honey dripped from my lips as i said, cause people have not been kind to me." Sounds pretentious, but maybe my use of the particular word was wrong. The rest of what I said still stands though.
I'm trying to make sense of her phenomenal success. It's simply to trite to state that she is appealing to young girls without any consideration of how. Her poems are stripped of all metaphor and ambiguity. She tells the reader what to think and feel. Her Work is accessible and basic, they Read
misterMagoo4 All the girls my age find her to be the best poet they've ever read and honestly, I'm just trying to understand how this could be because I genuinely don't feel anything for her work. There's nothing good about it, for me. And then there are people making it an issue about gender and race.... As a brown teenage girl, it makes me feel like I'm not being faithful to my own "community" by disliking her poems.
I think it's the accessibility of her work that makes it a success. The very generality of her poems mean that people from whatever background can identify with the repetitive themes she explores. How else can one explain her phenomenal success in selling poems in disparate markets such as US and Brazil? You shouldn't feel obligated to like her poems because of her ethnicity; perhaps you'll be inspired by her success to publish yourself.
Milk and Honey, beautiful, but I wouldn’t call it poetry! I know everyone loves it and even I own it, but only as a coffee table book! It’s a compilation of very spaced out sentences, not necessarily poetry!
Like you could do it better? If you are judging her I assume you are perfect, that is the only way you can criticize someone Her way of reading it it’s not forced, is the way she reads poetry it’s her own way to recite it, just because someone doesn’t do things your way doesn’t mean it’s wrong It’s not social network poetry because it’s comes from here own personal experience, it’s her way to express herself and deal with life, you’d know that if you’d dig in in her poems and have enough reading comprehension. If you’re such a poetry expert I’d love to hear one of your poems. If you really wrote them of coarse. Ps: Instead of criticizing so harshly you should make kind and constructive criticism. I’ll be waiting for your poems.
She just has this aura to her ; I usually find usage of the term je ne sais quoi convoluted but I literally can't quite put my finger on what makes her so special. Like hearing her speak makes me feel as if I'm floating two inches off the ground and reading her thoughts took me even higher. Like she's such a free entity I by proxy feel liberated by the idea of her presence. Like to say she's beauty personified undermines almost that she's almost definitely on another plane of intelligence. Well regardless thank you Rupi for bottling your thoughts for the masses to enjoy and granted you got my money you also got my heart (plus shipping and handling).
These read like motivational posters on the walls of an elementary school classroom. All I hear is: "You always miss 100% of the shots you don't take" - Wayne Gretzky - Michael Scott
Poems do not need rhythm or rhyme. Or grammar or punctuation. That's just technical - and unnecessary. Poems are texts which communicate much more than the bare words do. Here, I think, each line is a thought element, broken by the way you pause while speaking them. This adds to the listeners thorught processing. If you think while reading or listening, you will get much more out of them.
LOL. People on the internet being dumb as always. It's HER work, if she reads it like that it's because it was meant to be read like that...Now if you would have read it or if you read it in another tone, good for you that's what we call appropriation of a work or interpretation. In either case she's the original artist.
Watch Pablo Neruda reciting his poetry, it’s almost the same cadence....that’s just what a lot of poets do. I prefer another approach, but that’s for me to do, not other poets.
I wrote a poem for her. it's something like that: just diving sentences in really weird verses doesn't make the sentences poetry it makes it sound rather pretentious and lazily made please think before you write or publish
Scarlet Starlet but somehow..... she is a #1 New York Times bestseller.... and you're not... hmmm, I didn't realize that you were a poet laureate, but good for you!
+Lauren Haiar i don't need to be a famous poet to have an opinion on poetry. You may like her book, but i don't. And it's fine, guess what? people have opinions.
Poetry Is not about rhyming, it Is not about trying To be abstract But what she writes is not poetry Either; It's only Instagram And those Metaphors Are contradicting Her own Expression and wording Oh, poetry is Fragile And those Rivers and mountains And metaphors of Different kind, It's just not This; not what She writes.
I got this book and I was excited to read it because everyone likes it. I didn’t like it and idk why, I thought it was just me but I guess it’s not. I knew this book sucked.
Bought this book, read it in like 15 minutes. Waste of money. Don't know what all this buzz is about, I was waiting for a lot more than just a few lines and 'enter' after every other word.
Beinghuman45 eh its really short and the line breaks don't make much sense; some come after linking verbs and prepositions making it, well, less than perfect. The main themes are also extremely confusing, some points are "all boys are rapists" others are "I want him inside me", and there is no distinction of whether or not she is talking about the same boy. Given I'm a guy, and I don't really understand how women think, I would give is 2/5 stars, but if you're into the stuff, get it. Very tumblr Esq.
@DeanKardas I also write poetry. Here is the link if you wanna see: facebook.com/codedwords1/photos/a.704292816394778.1073741828.704245059732887/828317070659018/?type=3&theater
Beinghuman45 Hi, your poetry, while not terrible, is very basic and contains similar mistakes of people just starting to write. The main problem is that the reader has no idea what is going on; the poetry is confusing and not clear. Poetry is about concrete ideas and using language to be able to develop these thoughts into a form that is not possible with normal prose. "Dark storm,/Mighty thunder,/Violent winds." The picture you are painting is of an actual thunder storm in a very cliche way, yet i am assuming all of this is metaphorical. Drop the abstract and start trying to use words that describe the situation. If the first stanza is metaphorical, then the next one, "I stood fierce,/And made it through it all" would mean that this storm of whatever you are trying to convey is over, and you are now better; for you "stood fierce" and didn't break down. Yet, the very last stanza, "My broken pieces are waiting/to be whole again," would suggest the complete opposite; if you had truly stood fierce, you wouldn't have been broken. So, not only do I have no clear idea of what is going on, even the vague parts that I am trying to discern contradict themselves, adding only more confusion. You use cliche phrasing like "blissful sun rays," and having your "soul bathe in warmth." Why are the rays blissful, how can a ray be blissful? What does it mean to have your soul bathe in warmth? "I gasp for breath in fresh air." Normally gasping happens when you can't breathe, why can't you breathe? There wasn't a use of a metaphor using drowning or chocking, so the stanza becomes ineffective. Again, "blanket of darkness" is just another cliche phrasing. In addition, the line breaks need to be worked on to show the flow of the poem; there shouldn't just be random breaks, as line breaks are amongst a poet's greatest tools. Specifically, the "Now, the darkness has faded/away," is an awful line break; it just doesn't make sense. Also, a comma should not be after "Spread across the sky," for if read in prose the whole stanza reads as: Now, the blanket of darkness has faded away, spread across the sky, is the glow of dawn. With that comma, the line "spread across the sky" becomes an appositive for the blanket of darkness, which I assume is not how you intended. I suggest you change it to: Now, the blanket of darkness Has faded away; Spread across the sky Is the glow of dawn. Though, the wording of this stanza and a more concrete use of ideas and connection could greatly improve it. Since I have no idea of what you are actually writing about, I'll simply suggest a better stanza wording wise (don't be afraid to rhyme!): This reach of darkness Has been spread thin; Left behind is the subtle Hum of Day's begin. My biggest concern is how vague your poetry is, because remember, poetry is about concrete ideas. Hope I don't come across as too harsh, good luck writing!
why do people love to put other people down so much if they are successful for something they don't see as "worth the success"? guess what, no one pressures you to read the book if you don't enjoy her form of poetry, but rupi expresses things that are talked about way to little and it is good that her book is best selling. yes, there are better poets and whatnot but why can't we stop comparing and be glad that awareness about these "tabu" topics is spread?
In the poems in this video, this is what I heard. First one, she basically talks about how women are strong and that their "spirits crushed mountains". Basically empowering women. Have heard that one before many times. Second one talks about how women are being used just for their bodies and then men leave them. Self-explanatory. Calling out men. Awfully plain. Straight to the point. I can see why women love her stuff. It relates to them so much that it blinds them from her ordinary and dull works. There is nothing taboo about this.
First off, everything she mentions in her books are topics that have been discussed many times before. She's not special because she translated that into poetry. Also, we're all entitled our own opinion, just like you're entitled to your own.
People are harsh to this women by the look of the majority of negative comments. She became famous because one, two, three, four and millions of others loved her work. So accept that there are people out there creating art out of THEIR own perspective and personal life obstacles. You don't have to put others down for what they create but instead realize that these are her own experiences and this is simply an outcome out those experiences in an artistic way. I don't tell artist how their work wasn't captivating enough, but instead I simply look to others that I can relate more.
17 year old male tryna write poetry here. feeling a bit discouraged by this comment section now honestly lmao. read halfway through milk and honey in the bookstore just now sure its a bit expensive for less words per page.... I dont see anything wrong with it though.... Thoroughly enjoyed the poems
RAFPega lol i didn't hate the concepts, it's just that the poems are sentences divided randomly. it has no rhythm or some sort of structure. that's why people hate it. but don't worry, keep writing!! i believe in you!! read lots of poetry, other than rupi lol
Dude this poetry reads like the poet doesn't actually know anything about any other poetry. As long as you read a lot of poetry I'm sure you'll be fine. As an 18 yr old who likes to write poetry.
RAFPega we're huge Rupi fans, as well. We actually even set one of her poems to music in the hopes that we could make it sing to others the way it sings to us ruclips.net/video/Qo4ovDIM_HE/видео.html
Look, people may write rude comments here (me included because i dislike Kaur), but who's laughing herself to the bank? She's speaking to young girls of colour and people really connect to her poetry. As a 20 year old girl who writes poetry, i wish you well on your journey! Don't let anyone discourage you. Poetry is alive and well: all forms of it.
Alannah A I am doing an English course and I know quite a bit about poetry, so before you start saying I don't know poetry, I do. But frankly, you dont need to know poetry to know that this poetry is very average and one dimensional. Maybe Rupi will become better and more mature with her writing, but for now this is something I would've written as an angsty 14-year-old.
Fluttershy Excuse me? She's gotten highly rated reviews by different critics and sold 1.4 million copies of her book. Off hand, I'd say she knows her shit when it comes to poetry.
I haven't read this book and I'm sorry if I offend anyone but from looking at this video, there's nothing really special about the poetry itself. I feel as if it's only popular because some young girls like this simply for its aesthetic which I admit, is well done.
Probably because it talks about stuff you didn't go through, or dont know about enough. You can't remember happening, so you won't be able to recall... it speaks to us because we lived through it and made it to the other side... it is said with the same words we felt inside and told no one. It's said from someone we've never met before and don't know. Yet who knows so much about us! 😪😔🥺😕
I don’t care how simple her sentences are, she could be writing with first grade vocabulary, idc I still love her work. It makes me feel connected to parts of myself I’ve hidden from for a long time. Thank you Rupi ❤️
Hello, father hello mother these mosquitos really bother! Running, hiking or tent pitching their not biting! I'm not itching! thanks for the package that's why im writing k-9 advantage stops all the biting!
There isn't really much to understand here is all I'm saying. The subject matter if very one dimensional, and her poems generally lack any intriguing vocabulary. She is an introduction into poetry for people who need that introduction. Nothing wrong with it, but she is the epitome of instagram poet, and thats not going to be respected by other poets, just saying.
I'm not that really into her poetry but you all really need to stop with these comments..... she may not be a shakespeare or anything. Not everyone is soo into'poetry' per say but rather something that could be easily understood and relatable. This is the reason she is the best seller , simple yet relatable. Not everyone likes intellectual poetry. If you'll have so much of a problem go study literature for how many years and write your own rather than judge someone.Cools bye...
Rupi Kaur fame is not even based on the merit of poetry. The thing that truly catapulted Kaur into fame and led to the explosion of content was her photography (specifically the drama revolving her menstruation photos). This is not about how good you are; this is not about your talent; this is not about how relatable you are; this is not about how understood you are; This is about fame. Blown up by social media. To be known. And, THAT is what gives a sell of 2.5 million copies. That's the sad part. It's not talent. Moreso, she ruined poetry. Now, millennials read her shit and think THAT is poetry... At least people who make fun of her work bring up good points on her shallowness, bring up new poets attention on the importance of line breaks, bring up the meaning of poetry and what it is, etc. The list goes on.. in a weird way, she brought poetry educators together.
Dear Everyone commenting who feels the need to be harsh and abrasive, Rupi Kaur is someone who has put together a collection of her thoughts for us all to read. she talks about serious issues and has her own unique style. One of the ideas she explores in there is beauty in almost everything; you just have to look for it. if you don't like her poetry then don't read it. but don't degrade those of us who do because we've chosen to find beauty in the words she's shared with us. sincerely, someone who is tired of all the hateful comments on a book about learning to love yourself, healing, loss and important issues
despite the ppl bashing on kaur, I see a lot of genuine ideas in her writing. the way she brings across important ideas in a simple form. u can tell she loves the medium and uses it as a way to speak her heart
??? this poetry changed my views in many ways ? She was raped by her uncle at 8 and deppresion tool her over ... this shows how she can see love in a anoyher point of weiw .... grammer does NOT have shit about her words
@@applexo6950 Lmao if you even read the book, Rupi wasn't raped by her uncle at 8. She was touched by her uncle at 5 years old. Touched not raped. And when the sentences are terribly structured without punctuation or capitalization, it makes it so much more confusing to read. It's truly mediocre, so yeah, I agree with it sounding like a simple Facebook status.
@@peachy2463 the reason for no capitalization and only using full stops can be found on her website... although i can read and understand my mother tongue (punjabi) i do not have the skillset to write poetry in it. to write punjabi means to use gurmukhi script. and within this script there are no uppercase or lowercase letters. all letters are treated the same. i enjoy how simple that is. how symmetrical and how absolutely straightforward. i also feel there is a level of equality this visuality brings to the work. a visual representation of what i want to see more of within the world: equalness. and the only punctuation that exists within gurmukhi script is a period. which is represented through the following symbol: | so in order to preserve these small details of my mother language I include them within this language. no case distinction and only periods. a world within a world. which is what i am as an immigrant. as a diasporic punjabi sikh woman. it is less about breaking the rules of english (although that’s pretty fun) but more about tying in my own history and heritage within my work.
After writing poetry as a survival kit for myself for the last 30 years , then i need to take a leaf out of her book and self publish... the amount of stuff i've written over the years, but yes I admire her determination to get herself known for her work, it may not be everyone's cup of tea but at the end of the day she has done it for herself and it's certainly paid off for her, so well done x

Heres the issue, its not poetry its prose. I know a few people that compared her poetry to carol ann duffy's valentine, frankly speaking thats an insult to carol. Yes, her poetry moves away from the conventional methods, and is more accessible and to pretty much anyone, and thats great, but its still bad. It lacks, texture, rhythm, flow, inner meaning. No hate just my opinion.
She reminds me of Gabbie Hanna, they both act like they're so "immersed" in their own works when they're singing/reading. And neither can produce good stuff lol Edit: apparently it's not Hannah
Honestly i feel her way of expressing her own poetry is perfectly fine. Everyone needs to take a deep breath and understand that poetry, is beautiful no matter what form it is.
There is no way anyone ended up at this video by accident lol damn y'all don't have to like it but why subject yourself to watching it if you don't ? Then get angry at people who do
Von Kasey exactly and obviously they have no sense of real art, poetry doesn't have to rhyme what she written has substance and she has to be doing something right if she's making all this money from such "trash" these people are talking about. If you don't like it you're not obligated to watch or read what she's written.
Exactly! Also I think those people don't understand what art and poetry is. It's not supposed to be like anything and there isn't any wrong way to do it. It doesn't have to make sense and it doesn't have to be complicated. It's just supposed to express. How can someone do that in a "trashy" way?
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with watching a video you know you won’t like. Sometimes you watch it to see if you’ll change your mind on how you feel about it. Sometimes you watch it to come up with more reasons, reasons that are accurate and factual and present in the video, of why you don’t like it. Personally, I’m ambivalent to her poems. Some lines are powerful and the rest is just so elementary. I appreciate the people who voice their dislike of her poems because they offer an opinion that isn’t “wow this is so good!” or “this is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard/read!” Also, think about it. How boring would this comment section be if everyone voices the same opinion?
You're damned if you do, you're damned if you don't. If I criticised this without giving it a listen, I'd be told that I had no right to criticize. If I criticize after I listen, I'm told not to go on something if I'm just going to criticize. I clicked on the video to see what they hype was about, and I was disappointed. Her poetry is average and the way she reads it is just odd. Also I haven't seen a single comment which is angry at the people who like this, just comments criticising the actual content of the vid, not those who enjoy it. If anything, you're acting angrily towards those who don't like it
Wow this comment section has so much stupidity in it her words are some of the most powerful words I have ever heard she is such an inspiration so why is everyone hating so much?....
i watched this video because i was interested in purchasing this book. but the poetry isn’t any good. there’s no depth or layers or meaning you have to look for. in my opinion they are plain and uninteresting. no offence though.
I have heard a lot of hype around this book and I respect her and that she was able to be successful and the she talks about important things - but I was almost expecting more when I came to this video.
Anusha Tuan7 exactly. I read them in a different tone that was more assertive and empowering but she's like graceful and it doesn't match what the content is
For everyone that keeps saying her poetry is "trash" and calling her an "extreme feminist" who's poems are just hatred towards men, 1, it's called Spoken Word, it's not just some random poem, they're supposed to be read in a "feeling-and-movement" way; 2, mind you, her poems are old collections of what she had been writing for HERSELF after she went through trauma for years after being raped and constantly physically and emotionally abused. She explains all of this in her Ted Talk released on RUclips September 2nd, 2016, if any of you want to go watch it. Within the video, she says she wrote these poems to slowly reclaim her own body after feeling like she was constantly living in something that didn't feel like her own anymore, a body that now belonged to someone else unrightfully; later published her books to share with the world because she wanted to be the hope for women who have been taken advantage of in their own lives as well. As true as you are "entitled to your own opinions", her work has literally not affected any of your lives negatively to be dragged through the mud. There are better ways of criticizing one's work than being straight up rude and creating a mockery out of it.
Poems do not need rhythm or rhyme. Or grammar or punctuation. That's just technical - and unnecessary. YOu had bad teachers. Poems are texts which communicate much more than the bare words do. Usually they use metaphor and others figures of speech, but even this is not what makes them poetry.
To me, this is a KIND of poetry. Of course, there are and have been amazing poets that write in a completely different way and it makes you think differently. You might not like it, but others, like myself, do. We can relate and we feel good to read reminders of how strong we are. It's just nice and simple. I FUCKING LOVE the structure too. I love the idea of no capital letters and broken down sentences. And yes, it mostly pertains to women. So what? I keep seeing comments that are bashing her because she only speaks of women. It's like me being mad after reading Harry Potter and thinking, "ugh this magic stuff and flying on brooms is all make-believe. Why can't I just read a book about realistic ideas?" Get your head out of ass because this book has helped many. Yes, you might not like it, but you shouldn't call it shit when this book HAS actually been helpful to many, including myself. Because most of this has simply reminded me of how important I am to myself.
This is beautiful, it may not be considered as "poetry" by some of us but what is poetry? Everyone has a different definition and this is beautiful because it may had helped many people out there and that's beautiful ❤ have a nice day
Jasmine Really? Go read some poetry please. I actually suggest you go out right now to buy T.S. Eliots collected poems from 1909 to 1962, then after you're done cleaning up your tears because of that book, go compare Milk and Honey to even just one of Eliots poems... then sit back and let your mind explode. You will soon realize there are terrible poets and that your precious Rupi Kaur is one of them.
Jasmine If I see people flock towards such hauntingly atrocious and abominable poetry (and frankly such a dumb person) then I will speak out. I'm not for burning books, but I can make an exception with her.
Nayeli Martinez we're huge Rupi fans, as well. We actually even set one of her poems to music in the hopes that we could make it sing to others the way it sings to us ruclips.net/video/Qo4ovDIM_HE/видео.html
"I want to apologize to all the women..." well, if being pretty is something you're born with, then being intelligent is, too. but.. who cares about logic?
Black Forest Kirsch well what do you wanna be called? Kind and understanding? shit after your comment, ain't any shitling being serious if they tell you that
I didn't say I don't overall agree with the poem's message, just wanted to show how this poem doesn't make much sense. If somebody is lazy enough to write only very few lines without big metaphors, then at least these lines should make sense, don't ya think? A writer should be able to convey the message without such logic errors.
Black Forest Kirsch True. I do feel i wasted a bit spending on The Sun and Her Flowers. Not sure if i'm going to buy milk and honey cause ive already read halfway through that book in the store alone. Shows how short the content really is... but milk and honey does have more impactfullness reading , for me than The Sun and her Flowers
Black Forest Kirsch Yeah i'll stay optimistic though i at least get to learn the mistakes in writing poetry. There's somewhat of an understandable story in her poems i guess. Especially milk and honey Thats what i love about it.
She seems so lovely but in all honesty , I don’t see the appeal of her poetry. It’s pretty average and seems like the sort of pretentious stuff in tumblr textposts. Meh
A lot of haters ! Since everyone is such an outstanding poet and you have the credibility to critic others where is your published books? Why aren’t you famous ? Don’t like her stuff then oh well ! There are actually people who relate to her short simple and straight to the point poetry! Some people aren’t as complexed or complicated as others. Straight to the point with our emotions. Great Job rupi
my heart will remain broken by the ones who don’t understand that i am the one and only life of the sea the sky is mine i love to listen to the heartbeat of my enemies... i like to write poems that don’t make sense...
To all people criticizing her - of course everyone is allowed to their opinion but I think we need to understand that art has its own rules and what she created is a new kind of poetry, something like pop culture poetry, which speaks the best to the generation of the internet. It's like... ikea of architecture

These are good concepts but they aren't poetry, they're simple statements with line breaks and she COULD make actual, well written, good poetry but she doesn't. We should support women, absolutely, 100%, but we shouldn't support women just because they're women.

Briana Cooper thanku for this
no I think she manages to express really raw emotions in ways that don't overcomplicate them, but lay them out with just the right touch of poetry.
Ouch
People love this book because it makes them feel. Isn't that what art is supposed to do?

Flipping though her book yourself, you can tell she picked the longest ones on purpose. She's obviously a product of our instant gratification culture, but you can print out a song from Kendrick Lamar, like Mortal Man, and read that as an actual poem.
Do you understand what the word 'pretentious' means? Kaur's poetry is simply and guileless, the very opposite of pretentious.
misterMagoo4 "he asked me how i was so kind to people,
milk and honey dripped from my lips as i said,
cause people have not been kind to me."
Sounds pretentious, but maybe my use of the particular word was wrong.
So I'm guessing no one ever told her 'no'
Elias Langer damn in a SEA full of amazing comments on this trash poetry, this one is by far the best. For real

Her way of reading it it’s not forced, is the way she reads poetry it’s her own way to recite it, just because someone doesn’t do things your way doesn’t mean it’s wrong
It’s not social network poetry because it’s comes from here own personal experience, it’s her way to express herself and deal with life, you’d know that if you’d dig in in her poems and have enough reading comprehension.

It's poetry, poetry often has a rhythm to it. And besides, if she wrote it, I'm sure she knows how it's meant to be read.
LOL. People on the internet being dumb as always. It's HER work, if she reads it like that it's because it was meant to be read like that...Now if you would have read it or if you read it in another tone, good for you that's what we call appropriation of a work or interpretation. How many poems are there in the book? I haven't bought it yet. Just came to check the reviews first.
I suggest you change it to:
Now, the blanket of darkness
Has faded away;
Spread across the sky
Is the glow of dawn.
Though, the wording of this stanza and a more concrete use of ideas and connection could greatly improve it. Since I have no idea of what you are actually writing about, I'll simply suggest a better stanza wording wise (don't be afraid to rhyme!):
This reach of darkness
Has been spread thin;
Left behind is the subtle
Hum of Day's begin.

*taboo
Because we have freedom of opinion. Also, criticism leads to better work.
Cos she's overrated.
First off, everything she mentions in her books are topics that have been discussed many times before. She's not special because she translated that into poetry. Also, we're all entitled our own opinion, just like you're entitled to your own.
is this poetry?
yes.
is this good poetry?
up for debate.

The list goes on.. in a weird way, she brought poetry educators together.

although i can read and understand my mother tongue (punjabi) i do not have the skillset to write poetry in it. to write punjabi means to use gurmukhi script. and within this script there are no uppercase or lowercase letters. all letters are treated the same. i enjoy how simple that is. how symmetrical and how absolutely straightforward. i also feel there is a level of equality this visuality brings to the work. a visual representation of what i want to see more of within the world: equalness.
and the only punctuation that exists within gurmukhi script is a period. which is represented through the following symbol: |
so in order to preserve these small details of my mother language I include them within this language. no case distinction and only periods. a world within a world. which is what i am as an immigrant. as a diasporic punjabi sikh woman. it is less about breaking the rules of english (although that’s pretty fun) but more about tying in my own history and heritage within my work.
Her style of reciting is so pretentious that it almost feels like she's singing
Heres the issue, its not poetry its prose. I know a few people that compared her poetry to carol ann duffy's valentine, frankly speaking thats an insult to carol. Yes, her poetry moves away from the conventional methods, and is more accessible and to pretty much anyone, and thats great, but its still bad. It lacks, texture, rhythm, flow, inner meaning.
No hate just my opinion.

She really tries to make her voice sound like what shes saying is poetry
I'll pay you $50 for a book of your poems dude. So deep
She reminds me of Gabbie Hanna, they both act like they're so "immersed" in their own works when they're singing/reading.
And neither can produce good stuff lol
Edit: apparently it's not Hannah
agreed.
Gosh people can be so mean. This is someones life work- be a little empathetic. Sure, you can have an opinion but don’t be so cruel.
@@amy9091 I could go much crueler than that.
@@yes6087 😂😂😂
This is great work. I’m inspired by you to write my own poetry. Thank you for your words. 👏
How can someone do that in a "trashy" way?
we did
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with watching a video you know you won’t like.
If anything, you're acting angrily towards those who don't like it
Wow this comment section has so much stupidity in it her words are some of the most powerful words I have ever heard she is such an inspiration so why is everyone hating so much?....
i watched this video because i was interested in purchasing this book. but the poetry isn’t any good. there’s no depth or layers or meaning you have to look for. in my opinion they are plain and uninteresting. no offence though.
do u think its worth getting it?
cyrborg's wife cuts her wrist i bought the book, i think the way she read it recked it hit i would recommend.
When I read the book I read it in this voice...I didn't even know what she sounded or looked like.
I have heard a lot of hype around this book and I respect her and that she was able to be successful and the she talks about important things - but I was almost expecting more when I came to this video.
This is a mainstream favourite. And that's one reason to not mingle with the mainstream.
Just wow ,the father poem hit every note inside of me !!!
You call this poetry?
There is pluralism in poetry as well
Poetry for maggots
This was so cringeworthy. It's awful poetry, what's wrong with all of you.
The only 2 things that are wrong with us are different experiences and of course different preferences.

I have the book, and I always cry at poem 1:04, since I relate to it so much.
It’s not a poem, it’s prose
@@TonyMontana-pg6toit’s epic poem..
@@Camille_233 Do you even know what an "epic" poem is? You literally compared her shit to Odyssey...
@@valvihk3649 i was not talking about the quality of her poetry. But It is a still an epic poem. It is not prose.
@@Camille_233 Where am I talking about the quality of her poetry? Her shit is a two liner, you want to compare that to epic poetry genre?
One of my favourite poetry book, but the tone she uses while reading is so unsatisfying, this is supposed to be a fierce book
Anusha Tuan7 exactly. I read them in a different tone that was more assertive and empowering but she's like graceful and it doesn't match what the content is
Allison Smith ikr 😂 u get me
Yea i can agree
yeah
Actually...I think she sounds passionate. ☺
This is not a poetry
Poems do not need rhythm or rhyme. Or grammar or punctuation. That's just technical - and unnecessary. YOu had bad teachers.
Poems are texts which communicate much more than the bare words do.
Usually they use metaphor and others figures of speech, but even this is not what makes them poetry.
海岛森 this is not a english
yosemite Ever heard of capitalization?
Sorry. Lmao
Everyone has a different definition and this is beautiful because it may had helped many people out there and that's beautiful ❤ have a nice day
her voice is so calming
Her voice reminds me of a calm day in New York…
Why is this comment section so hateful?
Elias Langer no one is a shit poet. They all have their own message. Learn to love. Hate is an easy way out of life.
I have read a lot of poetry, all i'm just saying stop hating.
Jasmine If I see people flock towards such hauntingly atrocious and abominable poetry (and frankly such a dumb person) then I will speak out. I'm not for burning books, but I can make an exception with her.
Jasmine criticism is not hate. If nobody is a shit poet, explain why you are marked for your poetry "skill" in education?
I LOVE RUPI!! I'M SO HAPPY TO SEE THIS!!
Black Forest Kirsch
well what do you wanna be called?
Kind and understanding?
shit after your comment, ain't any shitling being serious if they tell you that
I didn't say I don't overall agree with the poem's message, just wanted to show how this poem doesn't make much sense. If somebody is lazy enough to write only very few lines without big metaphors, then at least these lines should make sense, don't ya think? A writer should be able to convey the message without such logic errors.
Black Forest Kirsch
True.
Seriously.. a kindergarten kid could have made up this poem, it's so basic. No offense, just being honest.
Black Forest Kirsch
Yeah i'll stay optimistic though i at least get to learn the mistakes in writing poetry. There's somewhat of an understandable story in her poems i guess. Especially milk and honey
Thats what i love about it.
Is anyone else reading the comments in your head like how she reads the poems?
She seems so lovely but in all honesty , I don’t see the appeal of her poetry. It’s pretty average and seems like the sort of pretentious stuff in tumblr textposts. Meh
A lot of haters ! Since everyone is such an outstanding poet and you have the credibility to critic others where is your published books? Why aren’t you famous ? Don’t like her stuff then oh well ! There are actually people who relate to her short simple and straight to the point poetry! Some people aren’t as complexed or complicated as others. Straight to the point with our emotions. Great Job rupi
Very interesting structure to these poems.. I think they'd be better in prose.

i just recently got this book and it's a very good read i love it!
Loved this💕and always will😌
i really dislike how people read in a 'slam poetry' kind of voice, that's what i get from her which makes her seem so pretentious
I agree, the words themselves should at least have their own structure and rhythm before being read out otherwise the reader just sounds weird
Her stuff is much better when read, honestly. Whenever she reads, it feels like she's be satirical.
so what her "poetry" is not so mind-blowing, she's so pretty and passionate. way to go, girl! 👍
To all people criticizing her - of course everyone is allowed to their opinion but I think we need to understand that art has its own rules and what she created is a new kind of poetry, something like pop culture poetry, which speaks the best to the generation of the internet. It's like... ikea of architecture
she freaking feels what she writted with all her soul
I have this book and i love it !!
