    I often get discouraged by this thing I see, that only the best communicative and talkative people or having a charming personality can get actual success on the art industry, I'm not like a bad person and I can take advices and critiques to my artwork for good, but I don't have that kind of enthusiasm to talk with people, I grew all my life being a complete introvert and now I wish I could learn those social skills more than this art skills :(

    • @TrentKaniuga
      @TrentKaniuga  5 лет назад +150

      I am an introvert too. I don't want to give you the whole sad story, but I never had friends, and always stuck my foot in my mouth. (still do sometimes). You can ABSOLUTELY develop this skill! And if you do, it will benefit you in ALL aspects of life. The key... is to understand that almost everyone feels nervous about meeting new people, or public speaking. It's okay to admit it. In fact, once you admit that you're "trying to come out of your shell", others will admire you for it, or at least it will make it easier to get over it. Another key is to talk with people about what THEY are interested in. The less you think about your own thoughts/wants/needs, and think of others' interests, the more they will love being around you. Just make others feel great, and they will enjoy your company. I hope that helps. I wish someone told me those things when I suffered from paralyzing social awkwardness!

    • @alexielmarquay
      @alexielmarquay 4 года назад +14

      @@ianalexanderreyes5890 as Trent said if you make a point to try you will get better at it. I used to be massively socially awkward, never going out, spending all my time behind my computer. At some point I decided that I wanted to learn to be able to be around people without feeling horrible and so I decided to say yes when I would receive an invitation, even from someone I barely knew ( I mean like parties not dating). I would try to have conversation with people there and not stay alone in a corner all the time.
      It was tough, sometimes I would feel so overwhelmed being around people that I would go hide in some place and cry. I'm not kidding. But then I would wait 30 min to 1 hour and go back to the party. And I did it again and again and again.
      Now when I meet new people and tell them I am an introvert they think I am joking because I don't have any issues talking to strangers (though I don't think this will ever be something that I love doing).
      This is a skill and like all skills you have to work on it to master it.

    I feel like beginners should be wary of where they post their art and ask for advice. Especially if you go to twitch you can get some really bad advice about not using reference and meet some very hostile artists who happen to be very good but have poor social skills and conduct and are definitely not there to help you. Those same artists also do not have industry jobs and are just streaming on twitch, and have NO IDEA how an industry artist actually works. Or if you join a discord full of miserable people they will just be way too hard on you and are really just taking out their own failures and frustrations on you rather than helping you.

    I've always wondered how many professionals quietly hope for someone to notice and praise the finer points of their work, and not just throw the faults into emphasis. Even pros need to know when their work is effectively conveying their intent. When they're doing good. If that isn't so, I don't think I want to be a professional.

    • @Hibernial
      @Hibernial 5 лет назад +1

      The Correct Spelling of Skilful That’s a fair point. Although I think that means even amongst professionals, one is going to choose who best to associate with for their own sake. Personalities that don’t mesh shouldn’t feel forced to remain in a working or associative relationship. The professional and corporate world is by no means a paradise.

    • @SkilledYetTalentless
      @SkilledYetTalentless 5 лет назад +6

      @@Hibernial Not all professionals are good judges of character, and less still possess the required extroversion to draw a selection. And I sense a good 80% of employed professionals, especially those in companies, don't actually get that choice. It's why I think the review and break-down and analytical channels for creative work here on youtube might be something of a lifeline to pros.

    Some good sites I go to that are for commission artists or used just for people to show their art:
    FurAffinity
    Furry Network
    DeviantArt
    Tumblr
    Twitter
    Instagram
    I don’t use Amino much especially for art but lots of people use it. FurAffinity is good not just cuz it focuses on different types of art (music, drawing, costuming, stories), but also there’s little sections on your profile where you can put “accepting commissions” or “accepting art trades”. FA is by and for furries but plenty non furs go there, especially commission artists. There’s plenty of bases, tutorials, etc and with sites like FA, DA, and FN, the way it’s set up is almost like a portfolio and can keep things organized, which I really like. You also get to rate your work like PG, PG13, etc so that people who want to filter that out can.

    Not a beginner, I'm actually drawing for more than 15 years now, but I'm still a hobbyist. I used to (and still do actually) post on DeviantArt, so obviously I don't have pretty much any followers. I'm sick tired of DA right now though, it's pretty much a dead page for years now, and now it's gotten even worse because 70-80% of main page is AI art. I'm against the way it was implemented, by art theft, and it's just so annoying when those don't even have to be tagged, so I cannot know for sure whether I'm about to fave an actual drawing that had work put into, or just automatic, generated picture. This makes me not want to visit DA at all and after being hesitant before faving anything for some time, now I'm not looking at any "drawings" there at all.
    It's time to change and go to a different site I think, and just leave that dead ass bottom. Just don't know where to go. I just want to casually continue posting my art, I don't want a huge following, but it would be nice to have at least someone to do it for, after those 7 quiet years on DA :/.

That site is very heavily based on Fanart and Fan communities, but most of the art I make isn't fanart, it's really more original stories and my own characters, so I'm not sure I would gain as much of a following there. You won't get a response from professionals until you pay them, or are good enough at the fundamentals of painting to be taken seriously. Anyone at any skill level can pay to go to the career pavilion of GDC (game developers conference) and wait in line with other artists to have portfolios reviewed. But it's expensive to do so. You'd be better off going to an art school and getting critique from a paid teacher, or hiring a mentor. Very few working professionals have time to critique beginners without some incentive for them.

      Go on Steam, look for projects you'd like to do similar work for, find the developers, search for their website. Greenlight and itch.io work for in-progress and smaller projects. Same for app stores for mobile games. Get involved in Game Jams. There's heaps of devs on Twitter too.
      You're probably not going to be able to get in on a studio from its founding without already being active in the community, since you'd have to be involved from its earliest seed before it's even a formal project yet = not findable since it doesn't fully exist. Again game jams can be good for that since you're matching with a group of people and you're making something from scratch that you might continue after.

    Hi trent, i was wondering if you could advise me on whether or not buy a tablet for digital painting or not. I started to learn drawing some weeks ago and im still on the basics like portrait figure shading and still life. Should i learn this first on physical medium or learn both of them at the same time ?
    I mean, most of the concept art nowadays is digital. At the same time i dont want to just drop physical medium, it just has something magical.
    Thank you

    • @TrentKaniuga
      @TrentKaniuga  5 лет назад

      If you're just digging into fundamentals (perspective, shading, anatomy), I recommend just sticking with pencil and paper (low cost) until you're sure that you're ready to get serious. It's like learning to play guitar. When you start out, just buy a cheap piece of junk till you start to get the basics down and see that you're using it all the time.

      It's like driving a stick shift car. When you're learning, you have to be very thoughtful of every single action, check your signals, make sure you're in the right gear etc. After a few years, you don't even think about it. I "wing it" a lot, but when something is off I always go back and find a way to fix it by checking those fundamentals of perspective and scale. Once you go pro, you can't be paralyzed by the rules, they should be automatic by that point. If you're not a pro yet, you should always draw your perspective grids and block out your objects in guides until it becomes second nature. It's like a language or any other skill. Eventually you only have to think about it when something goes wrong.
