Maria Clara feels unclean due to the sin of Damaso, and undeserving of love now. It's brave of her to tell the truth to Ibarra. If it's not true love, he would be so disgusted and dump her easily.
Precisely why no need for Klay to “awaken” characters. Even in the novel, Crisóstomo Ibarra is a man beyond his years. He was excellently portrayed in this scene. In a world where sex abuse victims shoulder the blame and shame whereas abusers get off scot-free, Ibarra only has compassion for María Clara and Pía Alba whilst he hated Padre Dámaso even more for abusing his fiancée’s mother.

@@marygracielag.mariot7301 Actually it's more nuanced than the usual "reason" most Filipinos believe. In contrary to popular belief, the Spanish language was the mode of language used in the country for 300 years. It's not "banned", as 1890s had the highest peak of Spanish literacy in the country. 1860s also saw the mandatory public education implemented by Queen Isabella II. Spanish was actually used and spoken as a lingua franca the way we use English today. The idea of Tagalog being used throughout the country was not yet conceived (it wasn't until 1935). It was the church who opposed it, as counterattack and reaction to increase of riots. The church was a conservative sect who was greatly affected by the revolts in Mainland Spain during the 1850s-1870s. As Spain destabilized during the period, the Church used the opportunity to increased their influence and control in the Philippines. The church meddled in politics when they shouldn't be. And as a result, they tried to use it as way of "censoring" what goes on around in the country like censoring non-religious Spanish newspapers, publications and media, and only focusing on Spanish religious literary pieces. In the 1800s, the church took control of most printing press in the Philippines, so they had the power and say what Filipinos read or write. That's why you won't see creative literary pieces as popular as 1700s literary pieces like Ibong Adarna and Florante y Laura during the mid-1800s because the media was heavily censored due to the rising liberalism happening in mainland Spain. But that does not mean Filipinos were not "taught" or did not "speak" Spanish. It wasn't until the Americans arrive that an all-out ban against the use of the Spanish language was enforced, hence the weakening of its prominence similar to what the Americans did to French language in Louisiana.

Nobody around Maria Clara can truly understand what she's going through

Filipinos are now trying to learn a third language, but it’s not anymore Spanish. It’s going to be Korean.
