Thank you for laying out such a persuasive rationale for continuing to gather prayer books. I'm sure i'll find myself repeating your arguments frequently.

Three great reasons to use a prayer book for daily prayers: 1. To keep a disciplined prayer life. 2. To be praying within “the communion of saints”, from the rising of the sun until the going down of the same, the name of the Lord shall be praised. 3. To pray with objectivity and not be entangled in the maze of our emotions! Thank you

Love your thoughts on the communion of saints during prayer. I often think of my brothers and sisters in Christ praying along with me.

My introduction to the Eastern Rites was from a Melkite book that I bought many years ago in the book store of the ROCOR cathedal in San Francisto.

Alas, by your prior comments, you have already let us know which one you choose to the point that --- if I were a betting man --- I would know which one you will pick. . . Your thoughts on why to use a prayer book are wonderful and have added to my enthusiasm for using one.

I love the way you say, "I get distracted (sip)...and find that the older I get..." 😊 I too appreciate being able to pray written prayers, well-hoaned prayers of saints over the centuries. Are you sure you are collecting prayer books, or is it a fetish? 😉🙂But seriously, do you have some kind way that guides which one do you select throughout the year, or do some end up collecting more dust than others, or perhaps just a feeling from day to day? I guess there's always, "Eenie, meenie, minie, Mo." Either way, I think its great and I enjoy seeing some of their contents.

It’s significant that the Book of Common Prayer has been approved (with minor edits) by both Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches; making the 1928 BCP the most truly “ecumenical” prayer book available today. As a Lutheran (and former Anglican), I also enjoy using it - both the 1928 and 2019 editions of the BCP.

I use prayer books and also collect them. Two of my favorites are the 1662 BCP - International Edition and the 1998 Manual of Prayer of the Pontifical North American College (Latin and English). Other beautiful non-Christian prayer books I enjoy are the 2022 Baha'i Prayer Book (BIC Edition), and the Rabbinical Council of America Edition of the ArtScroll Siddur 2004.

Leave it to Cranmer and Coverdale to bridge the gaps between Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and The Anglican Reformation!
I look forward to see which book is your choice to rule them all. I say, give it to Samwise because he has mastered his pride and isn't effected by the power of the ring. Oops, getting my stories confused. 🙂
I think its going to depend upon whether one wants use an office based on early Modern English, or contemporary Modern English. Another consideration would be how many hours one wants to pray in one day.
Both books are not difficult to use. Even a Heretic can figure them out. 😁
I'm interested in what you think of the extra sections in the back of the Saint Bernard Breviary. Even if one doesn't practice private confession, examination of conscience daily and before receiving the Sacraments is a necessity.
Its a difficult choice, but I believe one would benefit from either book. Which one is best on a desert island where one can have only one book? I am looking forward to your comments and observations.
