The little storage places at Fort Pickens is for ammunition. It was stored separately so if the Fort was hit not all the ammunition would go up at once. (husband's comment) he is former military.
The reason part of the fort is missing is due to an explosion in one of those magazines. The missing section is now where one enters the fort. Back in the seventies there were no electric lights installed and you needed a flashlight , great time to be a kid.
They (the short narrow passageways that led to nowhere) are “self destruction” mines. If the enemy overran the counterscarp and got into the dry moat, the forces inside the fort could detonate the gunpowder in these mines to keep them from overrunning the fort. The majority of the powder would be stored in brass lines casemates. The hole in the fort wall (the big one, not the dug out cistern you showed in the video) is actually a bastion that was destroyed when a fire reached the powder magazine and detonated the powder stored there. Debris from the explosion landed at Fort Barancus over a mile and a half away. The “dungeon” was where they housed the batteries used for the water based mines y’all saw out side. For years it was mistaken as “Jeronimo’s cell” (he and his warchiefs were actually held in the officers quarters like the ones close to the entrance of the fort and had open access to the place during their internment) during the 60s and 70s.
You can’t double park at Ft Pickens, let alone septiple Park. Kayakers get tickets all the time out there for their bed extensions protruding beyond the parking space. Park rangers do have law enforcement authority in national parks. Ft Pickens has developed campgrounds for $26/ night [www.nps.gov/guis/planyourvisit/fortpickens-campground.htm] , why would one think it would be okay to freeload in a parking lot? You can’t do that at the Grand Canyon or the Great Smoky Mtns, the National Seashore is no different. One may primitive camp on Perdido Key, Petit Bois, Horn, and Ship Islands for free, but you need a boat to get there and a free back country permit (Perdido).[A recent development because the area was getting trashed by people leaving their garbage behind]
