How to Straighten Bent Steel - The Redneck Engineering Method

  • Today I'm showing a crude method of straightening bent steel. I will also talk about a safer, more precise method as well. But in the video I'll show how using a readily available things to make some decently bent steel into a relatively straight, usable piece of steel.
    Hopefully this might give you some ideas that might help you on a similar project. As always, I hope you enjoy and let me know if you have any questions!

    6:25 excellent job on straightening that angle iron. I didn't see anything unsafe at all about that method.

      Thank you! And as for the safer mention, that’s probably just my subconscious forcing me to say that to appease the safety police that inevitably come out any time I do something that isn’t maybe the norm😂. What I more so should have emphasized is that it is more controllable and accurate.

    1/4 inch angle iron is such a structural wonder, and definitely worthwhile to rehabilitate! Your ad hoc use of targeted brute force is exemplary. It's reminiscent of a similar method for breaking the tire bead off a wheel.

      Yes, it can certainly add a bit of extra interest in the piece if you could make a corrective bend relatively easily.

    Thanks for another great one "Real World" skills video, Joe! In a recent AvE video, he says something along the lines of, "Why buy it new when I can make that for you half as pretty for twice the price!" Made me think about my recent shop towel holder brackets and this project of yours. We put some effort into saving a few bucks don't we! Still, it almost always feels better to make & reuse things ourselves! All the best, Andrew Thiessen

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  Год назад +1

      Yes, yes and even more yes! That was spot on with the cost and effort of how we do things sometimes. So that’s why you gotta factor in ‘satisfaction’ as that intangible as to why we do some of the things we do!

    Why not start on the shop concrete from the beginning?

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  Год назад

      Starting on the ground is just a little bit easier to keep from over correcting by making small corrective steps. And the bigger bend is held more stable with the corners set in the ground a bit.

    I wonder if heating it up in the bend might have helped any??

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  Год назад

      Yes it helps a lot if you’re making a sharper bend. But in this scenario, if it got too hot it could buckle under a load like this. But it certainly help in more technical situations. I don’t know if you watched any of the travel trailer build, but in the first video my father in law helped me bend that tubing using torch😊👍

  • @angiekrajewski6419
    @angiekrajewski6419 Год назад +2

    Ok but wonder if the steel bar would have some weakness in it at the spot that was bent…

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  Год назад

      If you make small bends it should not loose much integrity. But if you go too far with a correcting bend it can affect strength for sure. So the key is little steps.

    Have a small Honda sus no truck.
    Have some 16 foot 1 by 6xs that I am going to repair fence with . Maybe I can lay in over the bent area near bottom of gate and put pressure to bend it?? Its hollow though so maybe to weak to take any pressure? Also, if thr answer is yes would I do it on my big cement drive way or on the pasyure grass? Any suggestions?
