Absolutely outstanding. This is the Ashford I remember. This is a complete blast from the past and is very very welcomed. Wish I could have taken more pictures than I did, and that 4L, is absolutely amazing.
What great footage. Some familiar traffic here with Cromptons & passenger stock. The Jaffa cake livery was very smart in my opinion. Was a little surprised to see the class 47 in large logo & also the class 56 in Railfreight grey with red stripe thou but most welcome. And of course this film is before the re-build to Ashford International. Thks for sharing.
The classic sounds of old times.....look out for my "All Aboard" videos...just sound recordings from the 1970s and 80s...lot to come yet....Many thanks and best wishes.....Mark
Remember when EMUs were quiet? Just the hum of the traction motor gearing as they pull away. Modern units make such a racket with all kinds electronic whines and screeches
Hearing Ashford this is Ashford brought back memories used to live in care in Ashford and went back home to London every holiday and alternative weekend and loved the fast service Waterloo east and London Charing Cross only
The days when a "fast" service actually meant fast: Non-stop Ashford to London. HS1 has turned the Southeastern Mainline into a turgid slog of a journey.
Great memories. I was a box boy at Ashford signalbox at this time. March, I turned 18 and went on to train to be a signalman at Deal box. Thanks for sharing the video.
@@spompey I just looked up in old records and yes, I was on duty that day so the person sat in the signalbox nearest the front windows was probably a 17 year old me! (I'm 52 now)
what a difference Ashford station is now to 89 i notice there was houses the other side of platform one which is now the rear entrance to the Eurostar terminal gone has the signal box where Norton sidings is platform three and four is now for Eurostar trains that haven't used it for 4 years gone is the walk way connecting platform 1 and 2 and three and 4 you don't see 47s and 33s there now either
Looked like a 5 REP coupled to a CIG and VEP around the 16:30 mark. Never knew REPS worked the Southeastern let alone coupled to other EMUS. On second thoughts maybe it is a TC. Still rare though.

Another smashing video! I always thought that Jaffa Cake was a far better livery than the NSE toothpaste scheme...
In the old days the wrought iron gates on the bridge closed prior to every departure.

Dam you beat me to the jaffa cake reference LOL
Was the toothpaste brand signal ? 🤣🤣
I remember RAIL Enthusiast doing a feature at the start of Jaffa Cake-era, think it included the heavy refurb of the 309s

Brilliant video, love the DEMU at the beginning, the 203. Was that in normal service at the time? I didn't think there were any left at this point.
