Parents can still spank their children at home in the state of Virginia where I live and other states that banned public school corporal punishment. In the United States in most of the states a parent can still spank in the home as long there isn't any bruise or injury marks.

In some things I agree that a spanking should be the last resort, however when someone takes it to the abusive, cruel, harsh way it can be wrong in the connection with corporal punishment- that is why people resent there strict parents or teachers when they go overboard with paddling, or punishing them physically. In some cases it can cause children to turn against the the parents or teachers who are doing it in the extremity.

It worked best for me because it wised me up to the fact that at 14 I still wasn't too old to get spanked. I had been previously warned about neglecting assignments, so sitting in detention might've gotten "catch-up" of the assignments, but busting my butt gave me more to think about and 'feel' walking home and really adjusted my behavior.
That punishment might have hurt because of the spectacle in front of the class and the humiliation of the boys but other than that it seems symbolic and unlike to cause any real suffering. I'm surprised to see a teacher so casually dressed.
