Too bad David Carradine didn't skip that step. Nobody wants to be remembered for the awful way they died. David was such a fine actor, but now when people think of him they remember how he was found in a Bangkok hotel dead from "auto-erotic asphyxiation". 😢
Tom Waits is an artist in the purest sense of the word...writes about and reflects his view of life, and nails it every time...Nighthawks at the Diner is one of my favorite albums of all time. Bravo sir!
I found this album in 1980 at a used book store and bought it based purely on the album cover. Reading the names of the songs I knew it was coming home with me and I'll be unplugging the phone. I wasn't expecting it to be life-changing, but damn! I was 19 in 1980, but I feel that I wasn't truly an adult until after I listened to the whole album about 4-5 times. This song especially. Could be my theme song! I've definitely been better off without a husband. I should have listened to Tom and never married.
I arrived in Toronto in 1976 after four years in Sngapore and 7 years in London England..and purchased this album...my soul brother...sitll have it...i know its done in a studio pretending its a night club..but it s TOM...memories
Tom Waits is pure talented genius.....makes you laugh then turns a phrase that can grab you instantly because its nails a simple truth common to everyone.
great cuts from a great l.p. belive it or not. i gave up all control of my wedding, just so i could have this as our first dance. all the older folks thought it was a nice waltzt, till they heard the words. we did last 20 years.
LOVE Tom. So many great songs, yet this remains, while not my pure favorite, but closest to my heart. Used to play this while making Monster Burgers with a great friend at Flight School in Pensacola, Fla. The song is great, but the memory is SACRED.
Today is my wedding day. I'll marry the love of my life in a few hours. But this song reminds me of all those lonely, cold years I had before this. I'll never ever forget this song. Never forget where you came from.
All my friends are married Every Tom and Dick and Harry You must be strong To go it alone Here's to the bachelors And the bowery bums And those who feel that they're the ones Who are better off without a wife I like to sleep until the crack of noon Midnight howlin' at the moon Goin' out when I wanto, comin' home when I please I don't have to ask permission If I want to go out fishing And I never have to ask for the keys Never been no Valentino Had a girl who lived in Reno Left me for a trumpet player Didn't get me down He was wanted for assault Though he said it weren't his fault Well the coppers rode him right Out of town (chorus) selfish about my privacy As long as I can be with me We get along so well I can't believe I love to chew the fat with folks And listen to all your dirty jokes I'm so thankful for these friends I do receive (chorus) Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Tom Waits
My first serious love, my ex, turned me on to Tom Waits, and for that I’m grateful. He recently died - too young. Drank himself to death. I feel guilty because he told me I broke his heart. His brother gave me some of his ashes. I am contemplating what to do with them. I may plant a forsythia bush (which he liked) and sprinkle his ashes under, while listening to Tom Waits.

i bought this lp in the seventies..still got it.
Tom Waits in the 70s was half character actor, half musician, and half stand-up comic. He had it all, and then some. The 150% man!
every nut case needs a hero, my audio late night drinking buddy
He's about the same still. Hope for another tour.
“ I’m not weird about it or anything.” “I don’t tie myself up first.” I love this man.
"Makin' the scene with a magazine . . ." Gotta love Tom.

Nighthawks At The Diner is album you play with some alcohol at your side. It's mandatory.
A national treasure on the same level as Bukowski. Genius

Still listening since I saw him at the Paramount Theater in Seattle. 1975! The coolest cat ever!

Hysterical. What a brilliant artist.
my dad played this song for my mom on their first date and I played this song for my wife on our first date, and again at our wedding.
& you lived happily ever after with a sense of humor.
That's pretty fucked up.
Sir veillance I see you must have no sense of humor. What a sad life you must live.
@@captspaulding8530 oh please. That is a bit degenerate and creepy.
Sir veillance you really don’t have a clue, do you? Go be a troll some place else.

Beautiful words, man
My condolences.
From the north you poor bastard
still married? "-)
@@danozism Yes!
Tom is hilarious in this, funny how a dude known for being weird and mysterious can be so down to earth and relatable
the weird/mysterious is his 'act' or costume .
It's not an act.
He is not weird. Just logical.
" normal " ppl r weirder
@@sYnerGyZniGmA But it's no clear where the act begins or ends, because he's so private. Hence mysterious.
Love the album cover !!!
"Making a scene with a magazine" !!!
I love this intro. I laughed the first time I heard it, and smile every time I hear it.
Tom has been married to the same woman for 38 years.
And that's the Beauty of it

This always sounds like Christmas with light snow to me
Yes. Yes it does...
Haunting does not begin to describe the energy and feeling in this song.

@@RevWillTheThrill1974 Did you...?
@@bobgreen623 It's been a couple of months since I wrote that. I honestly don't remember. Pretty sure I did at some point since, though.

He could have been a brilliant comedian.
He is a brilliant comedian, kaizmorgan.

I have shamelessly stolen the "take advantage of yourself" line so many times. This entire album reminds me of the thing I love about Los Angeles.
MAKING A SCENE WITH A MAGAZINE
Happy birthday a couple days ago to one of the best: Nighthawks, Swordfishtrombones, Renfield and Dr. Heller (say it with me: "Heller.")
Happy Valentine's Day. 🤷❤

He's married now. He doesn't do this one anymore :-)
"I'm not weird about it or anything. I mean, I don't tie myself up first."
