  • Owner of Blastoff Comics in North Hollywood, CA, Jud Meyers explains how the comic book experience has changed overtime in terms of the Internet. We learn that in a store environment, we have a relationship with others and have a great experience which is not possible with online purchases. Although digital comics are on the rise, there is still great value with physical comics and it's potential for collecting and selling

This guy is on point and hitting the nail right on the head Big Time. It's all about the experience. The experience is everything. I do not own a comic store, (but wish I did), however my Hemp/CBD store does the same thing. Customers tell us they sometimes drive 45 min to an hour and a half to come to our store, they pass about 10 other stores that are my competition just to get to me. We tell them we can mail them the product to save the customer a trip, but they tell us if we mail the product to them then they don't get the in store experience and that is why they come, besides the fact we offer great products. The in store experience is we are constantly bringing in new and unusual product they've never seen, we never sale, we educate the customer on the products, plus get to know them personally like how many kids they have, life experiences, etc. Customer's say it's like walking into a bar full of old friends and great times. The "In Store Experience" is the key to everything else about your store and then you follow that up by staying connected to your customers through social media.

Great job! I totally agree that it is the relationships that keep us coming back to the physical comic book stores, I'm a faithful customer of my local store who has been in business since 1987 which is extremely impressive to be able to do. Keep up the great work and a special thank you to all comic book store owners for keeping our special hobby alive.

Great insight into how digital has changed the industry.
I'll stick with my physical copy of Amazing Spider-Man #300, though. 😀

This right here! I've been preaching about this for a long time now.I love going into my LCS and talking about comics with the owners, or other readers. I love going through long boxes of back issues, and getting older comics that I missed or remember from my youth. This is why I miss record stores and book stores and video stores, because I miss that interaction, not an algorithm that tells me I might like something because of my purchases. If I were in California, I would be in this guy's shop all the time because he seems to understand and appreciate his customers (I've been in shops where the owners don't actually give a crap about their customers, and I hate that). This video hit so close to home for me.

100% correct! And there were a few stores I visited 30 years ago that seemed almost irritated to interact. The ones that did, I spent all my money on!

Customer service is key! You have to treat you customer like they are your family ... Businesses survive from 20% of the customers that are regulars. That seems like a significant number but it speaks volumes.

I do digital comics. I started purchasing digital comics as a means to cut on space from the physical books that I purchase on a weekly/bi-weekly basis.
Like he mentions about the store experience, I love my visits to my comic book shop. Stepping inside, browsing their selection, and the interaction with the people who I've been seeing for over four years is why I keep coming back and why I still purchase physical books - when I can easily just get everything digital.

Even though Im not a comic book fan, I, as a book reader, can relate to this on so many levels. This is why I try to make it into a physical bookstore as much as possible and actually get a physical copy of the books I like

Great comments! I recall buying my first comics way back in the mid 60s in the UK.....they cost me around 1 shilling, which in today's money is 5p UK! It was my favourite thing to do, aside of reading books in libraries, as at that time, I couldnt afford to buy any real books...the only books I had were presents from my parents! But I agree with CRIZZIEE here that the shop owner has to be friendly to kids too.....I was frightened off by many newsagent shops (comic book stores didnt exist in the 60s!) where I used to try and buy a comic....the shopkeepers always gave us dirty looks or followed us around thinking we were thieves or something, or the shop owner would be very rude too, just cos we were kids. That put me off many shops. I like that that you say no kid, ever, will get anything apart from good feelings in your store. That comment there encapsulates everything I'm saying! Bravo. God bless and hope your business is around 100 years from now!

So true with the digital part. I used to buy digital marvel comics before they shut down the app, and I'm too lazy to sign up for Marvel Unlimited, so frankly I have only a vague memory of what I bought over the years.

While I agree with 75% of what he says about the experience of shopping on-line I think that ultimately the notion of comics as collectibles is what almost killed the industry in the '90s and seems primed to do it again. Yes, a small number of key issues have gone up in value but the number of copies of those books in the wild has gone down. You already see stuff like Action Comics #1 and Amazing Fantasy #15 selling pretty much exclusively at auction because that's the only way sellers will get the price those titles demand and this will become increasingly common as the supply of these titles drops. The biggest thing that kills a comic shop for me is going into a store that is selling anything that's not a key issue or a rare out of print trade for more than cover price.

You also can live in a small place where you have only one useless company, which is overpriced, and understocked. I miss having a real store.
