Mmm mmm I miss those gummy vitamins, haven't had them in years!
Aspect Science just to be safe make sure you don’t have a deficiency in a certain type of vitamin. But if you’re eating cause you like the taste or just cause they think they’re good for you when you take too many please stop cause that could possibly kill you.

@@boggartdrigestor3981 "You guys have soap?"
I'm sorry, you commented this _two years ago_ and we _still_ have this going around?
@@nathanpayne6765 You mean covid? Nah. We have the best weapon against it. mRNA vaccine along with 2 more types of vaccines. mRNA vaccine can protect you from literally almost any strain of covid. How? Well, it uses only the RNA of the virus along with a million more slightly modified RNA of the virus, We just cover it in an enzyme and send it in the body where it is enough to trigger a small immune response but creating memory T-cells for all the strains provided making you immune against covid.
We sooo need to develop a culture of sick leave/quarantine in the USA. There are so many people that seem to feel they have no choice but to work or attend some special event when they are ill. I wish we could shame every company, employer, and/or person that does this. I understand there are people that abuse such things, but we all have phone cameras with internet connections these days. (Most homeless people even have a phone these days) If anyone really wants to question 'sick' it's pretty easy to verify. There will always be a minority percentage of dishonesty, but that is not a justification for risking the spread of sickness. Employers should be required to be socially responsible first when it comes to sickness. It's far cheaper to pay one person to stay away and recover than it is to have half your workforce present but operating at 50% because one person had to "tough it out" and share. If everyone felt secure enough to get well we would be much better off. -If- *When* some major outbreak starts we are already screwed because of our stupid culture of 'work yourself to death' expectations.
Not everyone can afford to stay home. Sadly to many Americans don't get paid sick days and if they take the day off to get better they get replaced by one of ten people waiting to take their jobs for a fraction of the income
Upcycle Electronics people working while sick is a result of poverty and the lack of care companies place on their employees. as in; no paid sick leave.
dont blame the employees for that.
Mo Uddin
Exactly my point. That is a stupid way to run a business. It's not the employee's fault for doing what they need to. The problem is clearly just part of running a successful business. If a business is so dependent on a single person for a few days or even a week it's not a successful business. This coming from someone that has owned and run a business with employees.
While we're at it, let's stop rewarding school kids for perfect attendance. So often that comes at the expenses of other kids getting sick.
More people work at home than before, thanks to the internet and computer technology. But it's still a pretty insignificant number of the workforce overall. And only some jobs are really well-suited for work at home.
A friend of mine thought she had the flu and went to the doctor only to find out she had the plague. Literally. Her printout from the clinic said “Diagnosis: The Plague” and then something scientific in parentheses. They gave her antibiotics and she was right as rain within a week. But, yeah, I can vouche. The plague still lurks amongst us. (This was about 10 years ago, Nevada.)

I couldn't stop laughing when he tried to make the argument that the plauge wouldn't be weaponised because it'd be violating international treaties. You had just mentioned the potential for bioterrorism. I'm not Sherlock Holmes, but even I can observe that terrorists don't care about international agreements and treaties. I really hope that if the plauge does become a global epidemic again that we respond to it firmly and swiftly.
i thought the exact same thing
Its more the idea that if there was any wind that someone was attempting such a thing, he would have, well, the vast majority of the world on his ass.
Numitron that was my reading too
Makem12 not to mention some countries seem be able to violate international law frequently.
The consequences on reputation and trade of using weaponized small pox would probably be worse than using nukes.
A nuclear armed country won't use weaponized small pox unless either they think they can peg the attack on someone else or the conflict is already on the verge of going nuclear (I say on the verge of going nuclear instead of already has because bio weapons leave your enemies cities intact while nukes don't and that might be worth the increased hit to reputation and trade)
Who's here after the two people diagnosed with the plague in China?

I watched this video right after finishing the book Inferno by Dan Brown. This video has very relevant scientific info relating to the plot of that book!
Now I imagine going to the doctors for flu like symptoms and he’s immediately like PLAGUE PLAGUE!!
SciShow should do one of these quick question episodes and have it be 5 seconds long and the only dialogue is "I dunno, fuckin probably."
I love how this video is a year early from the China infection
Very interesting, and I surely hope never to see it used as a weapon. A massive, natural outbreak seems unlikely in North America. There are protocols in place for when cases pop up to keep that from happening. Flu is more likely to reach epidemic levels.
Epidemics in general are a decent argument for keeping a stocked pantry though. If you have at least a couple of weeks worth of food, you could, if necessary, give crisis personel time to mobilize. Also good in case of heavy storm issues like power outages, etc.
It pays to be prepared for stuff that happens in your area.
if theres gonna be a new plague like epidemic, is going to be something carried by mosquitoes
@Stormz MC Wow, I'd forgotten all about this video.
Cool thanks
Ayyyy published on my birthday
This video would have been very useful to me 4 years ago before I did my science project about the plague
really nobody's mentioned ncis? i'm proud of you, youtube.
I think there is a serious hole in the plague fighting strategy particularly in U.S. because of the substantial urban homeless population. They are a focal vector for any pandemic because of their proximity and interaction with rodents and their ignored dwelling in the most high traffic places on can possibly imagine.
You do not have to go to other countries to find it. It is still endemic to the American SW.
While we do not have outbreaks in the community, there are a few cases to a few dozens cases reported every year in TX, NM and AZ.
Oddly, this is one area where overuse of antibiotics may have helped nearly eradicate it in the US. But too much use of antibiotics could give rise to resistant strains.
Plague: round 2 anyone?

This is why we need to use bacterophage ! (Viruse that can kill bacteria and only attaqued some specifice becteria so it can be really powerfull weapon agaisnt them)
Maby you can make video about bacteriophage ?
Pls no weve had enough😳😭
And I JUST started playing Crusader Kings 2 again today...
Would it be theoretically possible that the plague, or any long gone disease, might be laying dormant in the ice caps or any glacial regions? And that if these melt, the pathogen inside might be reintroduced into the human population? Trying to find out for a novel set in the nearish future.
Sounds like a good plot. It's unlikely but possible. I bet those viruses were frozen before primates ever evolved so it is unlikely it can affect humans. Maybe it will infect a bird and it will mutate which will allow it to infect humans but this is still unlikely
Yeah the whole thing didn't seem very probable. I'm now thinking younger glaciers, like some of the ones in North America, Scandinavia and maybe the Far North of Russia, but I'm not sure how convincing the whole concept will be. The plot doesn't revolve around this idea, just another factor to try and enhance the dystopian setting.
"And it's been PLAGUEing us.."
I'll go back into my little hole now ;_;
The good news is that tetracyclines and aminoglycosides are two of the most powerful classes of antibiotics and are rare to have resistance.
My geeky mind heard "plasmids" and instantly thought "wait, those are a real thing?"
Would you kindly make a video going into more detail about real life plasmids and what they actually do in the body?

4:38 Even just rotting flesh in general was effective due to the poor hygiene practices of the day. Armies would launch dead cattle (especially those who had succumbed to disease) onto the roofs of high towers where it was difficult to remove them from. This would attract flies, maggots, and generally weaken defenses.
I'm surprised that the plague is still around. But since it is still around, with thousands of cases every year worldwide, I'm surprised medical science hasn't managed to get a good handle on it.
I missed it first time!
Guess the player is sick of Madagascar surviving all the time and just opts to start the plague there this time.
there are small pox grave in Siberia that are now thawing out, raising the risk of a new smallpox outbreak. Since very few countries now hold smallpox vaccines and no-one has caught smallpox during childhood and thus acquired resistance, the risk is pretty severe.
For some reason we seem to have more plague cases than we should in Colorado. More than 22 cases since 2015, killing someone as recently as 2021. A boy survived it here in Colorado Springs after contracting it by messing with a dead squirrel while hiking. It's kind of insane to me that this is just something that we're all aware of and have accepted as part of daily life here. "Don't poke dead animals with sticks or you'll get the plague" is an honest and acceptable thing to say to children while camping here.
Well...Thanks for reminding that THIS is still a thing.
This is the stuff I think about when I'm on the Bus/train and someone wipes their nose/coughs into their hand and then puts it back on the handrail. Cough/sneeze into your elbows people! lol

I can't believe y'all didn't mention the squirrels in northern Arizona!! We have plague squirrels here. I get an email about once a year from the University or city government to warn me about plague being detected in my county.

I would like to think you're right, but you don't talk about how quickly pneumonic plague can kill and spread. By the time it's correctly identified, it could already be too late if it broke out in the right place.
4:28
Interesting
So fast !!!
Imagine living through a global pandemic... oh, wait ...
We can only hope.
I have a practical question for Scishow. Is Pasteurized Process Cheese Food cheese? And, if not, what is it?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the main reason plague isn’t so virulent anymore due to the fact that the only survivors from mediaeval times were the ones with natural, resistance to it. As people today are the descendants of those survivors, we all now have the resistance as it was passed down to us. Hence the plague has lost its virulence somewhat in many parts of the world. I understand thatantibiotics and cleaner living help as well.

A guy I worked with had the plague when he lived in Arizona. Caught it from a prairie dog.
Although the Plague isn’t dead presumably the people who survived it were either a)lucky or b)had a good enough natural immunity which would then be passed onto subsequent generations which would mean the plague shouldn’t really be too much of an issue today. Unless of course it mutates.
The Black Death still sounds like a Marvel Villain to me.
