Cannot forget that the final boss is a Nightmare Fuel giant alien head known as the Vortex Queen, who not only can eat Ecco alive & boot him to a sub-level (or back to the mega-hard Machine level in the US/EU versions), but Ecco can only beat her by repeatedly ripping off her jaw & gouging out her eyes, & ramming her head to cause her to have a seizure to get her to throw up his family. The second game has her return as a creepy red slug with a grabber tongue, & upon being beaten again, she becomes a terrifying invincible larva form The Dreamcast game (Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future) has terrifying moments, too: - There's a bad future where dolphins are gullible creatures that got enslaved by humanity (who were friends in the previous true future), were horribly inbred, were forced to mine & build weapons & were made deluded in order to do so (formed a masochistic cult where they believe they're suffering in order to build machines to unite everyone). Even after humanity wipe themselves out & the oceans are heavily polluted, these dolphins still hurt themselves; the Movers have lacerations & cuts on them (including the baby Mover named Pilot), Circles have scratches & bruised fins from turning wheels & swimming through poison, & the Crimsons ruin their fins with toxic red paint & believe they're just messengers of man. - Another bad future has N*zi dolphins trying to wipe out other races of dolphins, & they use whales as organic batteries. The dolphins they are trying to destroy are just as sadistic, as they also murder & abuse whales, & use what's left of them to build houses. - The final bad future has nightmarish aliens patrolling everywhere that can spir acid & leech air from Ecco by sucking him up. The Foe Queen can grab Ecco with her tongue & eat him. - The final boss (the Foe Queen) is the most disturbing Ecco boss. It spans across four of the five levels in the final bad future (Chance of Reckoning, Seeds of Poison, Transfiguration & Heart of the Foe) & the way to beat her is so disturbing that makes the Vortex Queen look like a queen of fairies in comparison; Ecco gouges out her eyes, & then rips her apart on the inside (her uterus, her spine & her heart) Even the music can be disturbing (although most of the Ecco OSTs do have some of the most beautiful & relaxing video game music to exist): - Ecco 1 on the Genesis/Mega Drive has The Lagoon/After the Storm, The Tube & Welcome to the Machine - The Ecco CD games have Medusa Bay, Motion E & Pteranodon Pond (& it's variations The Tube & Final Fight) - Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future may have the most disturbing tracks out of all the OSTs; it has Obscure Ways to Terminus & Transfiguration, which are both dark ambiance songs with heart beating sounds, warbling synths & unnerving strings.
The short version of my previous comment: the Ecco the Dolphin series may look beautiful & have relaxing music, but it has Nightmare Fuel final bosses & some disturbing songs But Ecco is very heroic for putting up with all of that & saving the world.
The best part is that she called the Finizen Ecco! 😃
Perfect name for that Pokémon if you know who Ecco is.
That game is deceptive. Makes you think you're just playing a cutsie dolphin game, then all of your friends and family get kidnapped by aliens.
