One Horse Gap - Shawnee National Forest - Southern Illinois Hiking

One Horse Gap in the Shawnee National Forest features some awesome Southern Illinois hiking adventures. One Horse Gap in the Shawnee National Forest isn't just enjoyed by southern Illinois hiking enthusiasts but you can expect horseback riding and mountain biking there as well.

(NOTE: It is advisable that you use Avenza App with R2R Trail bundle (both free) to help navigate your way through this area. The gap is located at N37 31.098 W88 27.550. There is much to explore in that entire area. Have fun and be safe!)
1. How long is this hike? It really depends on how long you want to hike. Allow a few miles of hiking to reach the gap.
2. Is this hike a rugged hike? Moderately difficult - expect rolling hills, rocky surfaces, roots and grown up conditions in the summer months.
3. Do horseback riders use this trail? Yes! This area is widely used by horseback riders. Mountain bikers also use this trail. Please yield to horses at all times whether you are on foot or bike. Talk to the rider in a calm manner in hopes that the horse will see that you mean no harm. Consider attaching a bell to bikes to help alert equestrians that you might be near.
4. Any additional tips for this hike? Try to stay on the trail at all times to avoid hazardous conditions. Poison ivy and venomous snakes are present on this trail. Bring plenty of water and snack when visiting this trail. There are no trash services on this trail so please pack out what you pack in. Firearms and bow hunting occurs in this area during legal hunting seasons.
