    ♥DISCLAIMER ♥
    During this video, when I go to discuss Gothic Lolita fashion, I made a comment regarding how the fashion style is often considered "child-like" and "controversial." Some lovely folk in the comments pointing this out as being incorrect, as those in the Lolita Fashion community see being the style being categorised as "child-like" very disrespectful.
    I took some time to do some additional learning and would like to fix it here! Lolita fashion in itself is very feminist in nature as it goes against the modern conventions of what is expected of women to wear. The style originated in 1970s Japan as a statement against Japanese society's strict gender roles. It's meant to represent the freeing of oneself from convention and the care-free freedom of choice!
    Any correlations it has to the book of the same name was purely because the meaning was hijacked by a bunch of creeps.
    Thank you to everyone who brought this up in the comments! ♥

      you slayed this update, thank you. i think all alternative fashions are misunderstood, some more than others, if you're looking at them from outside. im sure goths have their own share of stereotypes they dont like hearing too much. but at the end of the day we lolitas just love frills, bows and swooshy skirts, and as many other alt fashions we dress that way for ourselves and no one else. its not that we want to look like dolls or children (like be fr where do you see kids with that much drip) its just that as adults im sure a lot of people get told that they're too old to like something, like plushies or games or cute things, and that solidifies the idea in peoples minds that those things are child-like and so it becomes the first thing they think about when they see it. in reality, its just pretty, cute and elegant clothes, the fun of putting together a pretty outfit (with things we dont get to wear often in our day to day like big headbows and really detailed prints on clothes) and hanging out with friends who also like really cute things.
      all that being said, all the lolitas going feral in the comments over the contraversy, and i was just waiting for you to give the poor gothic lolita sim a headpiece LOL

    The Sims 4 needs to hire cc creators. The content would be more niche and correct. Even if the cc creator doesn't make maxis match, someone on the team could transition it to maxis match.

      It is not a problem of the Sims team, it is a problem of "being owned by EA". A better team would still be stiffled by the demands of that company. I believe people should stop saying "Hire CC creators" and start going to the patreons of the CC creators they love and pledging and downloading the content they want.

    Hello! Lolita Fashion input here. Lolita is a feminist movement from Japan and gothic Lolita is one of its many subcultures. It has no relation to the book that shares the same name. Also you don't have to be goth to wear gothic Lolita or Lolita in general (Though I am since I do listen to the music😅). And also the makeup is the least important part in lolita fashion, the clothes are what defines it, specifically the silhouette of the clothes! I personally wear all substyles of Lolita depending on how I feel day by day, but gothic is definitely one of my favorites to wear! (Also the sims look wasn't entirely correct according to most definitions but props to you for getting so close cause I haven't found any good Lolita cc in a while😭, fun fact the outfit if you want to get specific is closest to gothic ero lolita!)

    I'm not into the goth scene, so obviously take my outside observer's opinion with a grain of salt, but I think the biggest issue with the Goth Galore kit is self-evident in the name. It's a kit. They deliberately limited how much content can go into it, and as such they had to choose between one piece of CAS for all the subtypes, amalgamating them all into one "inspired" mess, or just going with what they see as the subtype that appeals to the most people in general.

  • @suzannemacmillan9135
    @suzannemacmillan9135 10 месяцев назад +24

    I am a goth, you did hit the nail on the head; and I believe you are a goth too since you listen to and appreciate the origins. Instead of gatekeeping, I like to share my playlist or tell them how ubiquitous "Friday I'm in Love" plays at my work and then they understand what I am talking about. The scene is packed with a bunch of "dash" goths who don't respect the origins or the social norms of the scene and that's when the gatekeeping happens. A lot of people who dress in a gothic fashion are more metalheads, hip hop heads, and emos than goth. But will eventually listen to the stuff. But most goths I meet are either working or have toned down the look. But you will meet more goths in the gym, the grocery store, or a crafts supply shop than the mall. We place a huge emphasis on DIY than buying your way into social acceptance. My work plays a ton of darkwave and post-punk hits over the the store radio and my co-workers are old school punks and elder goths.
    A lot of people who market to the goth subculture do not listen to the music nor respect those who do it for the aesthetic and I think it's just techbros trying to fuck their way into acceptance since they got kicked out of the metal and rap community. Hence the bullshit we see in the latest stuff pack I have more luck talking to soccer hooligans about Joy Division and Depeche Mode than convincing a programmer we're not cosplaying as Sam Manson. Vampires, Realm of Magic, and Get Together were better at handling the goth fashion aesthetic than the Goth pack.

    As a Lolita since the 2000's this warmed my heart. If you ever need more info on the style I can show you some things. Lolita mixes so much into the looks. It is Victorian it is doll and we even mix some trad goth elements into our look. The most popular looks are the rococo inspired looks but it is all about being your most over the top but authentic self. Some of the originators of the scene are 80's to 90's j rock bands.

      Heck yes, OG goth is the DIY variety. When people think "OG goth" they often picture trad goth. But that style developed in the early 90's as a callback to the late 70's early 80's post-punk and new wave fashion and just made it all black. The OG's wore a lot of color and mixed and matched fabrics, and much of it was thrifted or self-made either from scratch or by modifying existing pieces.

    I don't always listen to Goth music, I do sometimes because the Goth musical genre is good, so i don't know if I can be or even consider myself Goth, but I absolutly like dressing up in Goth inspired clothing (or just clothes that mostly Goth people wear). I listen to few and far between and I feel like they may not even fully belong to the gothic genre sometimes. I probably listen to more rock. The music scene is super cool though; I just think my musical taste is all over the place lol. In all honesty, I dress in gothic fashion because it just feels like me; I also tend to mix many different styles together and it's not exclusively one type of category. Like, I'm someone who has enjoyed the darker side of things since young - horror media, alternative music and clothing, anything witchy or mythical, aesthetics etc. Can't imagine being any other way. I think you're definitely goth. I however, am not. At least, not really.

    As someone who dresses in literally any style, history bounding, nu goth, nu metal style, cottage- core etc. I HATE gatekeeping in 'aesthetic' communities.
    - You don't need to listen to certain music to dress a certain way.
    - You do not need to like history to dress historical
    - You don't need to live in a cottage to dress cottage-core.
    People, we are on this earth for a VERY short amount of time, just fuck around and have fun!
    (and before any goths say ''meh meh you have to listen to music11!!!!111!'' i get it when you want to find more goth friends and you find out they don't listen to the music, that's how I feel with nu metal style but understand that people may be experimenting or just having FUN because that's what life is all about. And maybe even take the opportunity to recommend music! make a friend!)

      i think people can get too literal with labels that they put themselves into a box, even in alt subcultures (which is ironic lol)

    6:01 i know a LOT about lolita fashion, and Lolita the book/"girl" is NOT the same in any way as lolita fashion. Lolita the book is more coquette, which idolizes youth and sexualizes it in the "romantic" sense. Lolita fashion is about being doll-like and flawless with an underlying aesthetic element, like cute/creepy/goth/blood/candy/lace etc! Eventually lolita style became more gyaru-ified and became decora kei! It's still popular but many crossover with coquette patterns and themes rather than the original doll goal.

    • @spongecakes1986
      @spongecakes1986 9 месяцев назад +6

      As others have pointed out in similar comments, Lolita was never meant to be romantic. The book made it VERY clear that Humbert was a terrible and disturbed person, and that Dolores was a victim. The problem is that almost every adaptation, ESPECIALLY film, has pretty much taken it at face value and twisted it into being a romance, rather than a thriller from the villain's perspective. While the rest of your comment was correct, you're very wrong about the book. I think the one thing Lolita and lolita fashion have in common (besides the name) is that creepy men have twisted them and made them controversial. Both deserve more respect and understanding in my eyes, and I'm not even goth and didn't know lolita fashion existed till today.

    • @silvergust
      @silvergust 7 месяцев назад +1

      Eh.. Lolita isn't even "coquette". I've read the book and it doesn't romanticize any of it.. "Coquette" as a word doesn't inherently have negative connotations either. It generally just means a playful/flirtatious young lady if u disconnect it from the toxic tik tok fashion space. Which doesn't fit Dolores in the story on all metrics, & Humbert's twisted view makes it clear he takes it farther.

    Tbh romance goth and and Lolita goth are basically the same thing, just different origins, making it look slightly different.
    As a goth ouji, what I enjoy in this style it’s his historical inspiration and all. Except I prefer the ouji one than the romance one.

    And there are even moooore types of goths too that aren't as popular~! White Goths, and Hippie Goths are my favorites! For the first imagine all the leather, the belts, the garters, all the stuff we think of when we think edgy, just white. Same look, just more like those evil twins from the second Matrix movie. The second is just like it sounds. Long tiered skirts, triangle headbands, crochet tops, trifted clothes, all things boho, just more goth. Blacks, dark greens, dark browns, a kind of modern day peasant look with more edge. I used to be super goth, but now I just listen to the music and wear nightmare befor christmas shirts year-round. 😅
    ..Also, Lolita fashion came long before the work we all dread. No association, the creator just is a monster who ruined the fashion for everyone, and we need to stop bringing it up so it can be forgotten for good.

    the universal truth in culture and social life: "now we are the people we didn't want to be 30 years ago". When i go out today and see the current "goth" or "alternative" scene in general i think to myself "NOPE"... Then i realize 30 years ago, the old farts in the very same clubs were thinking the same about me and it makes me smile.
    Same goes when i go for a walk and pass some of those poor kids who are forced to share public places with the older gen (probably no internet at home or whatever). I always hear somebody (or myself) talking about the good old times, when we were sooo different and stuff. Actually, it is bs. We were the same, prettier for sure, smarter obviously, but in general the same.
    Thank you for the video, it was quite fun to watch, even i have no idea how i ended up here.

    I know you went over this a little already but please dont call lolita child-like!! Also mana-sama is awesome! Love him, his style is actually Vkei! or visual kei, which is like trad goth's Japanese cousin and helped birth the concept of gothic lolita! Lolita fashion is inspired by Victorian fashion and is themed around social stances and lifestyles similar to many other alt fashions like punk. Lolita fashion symbolizes trying to break away from traditional beauty standards and being cute modest and feminine in a way that supports yourself and not men's ideals! Because of this there is a lot of queer culture in lolita as well as self love and love of feminism!

    I love gothic lolita and lolita fashion as a whole, i hate how ppl connect it to the lolita book.

    I LOVE THIS!!! I'm goth and it for sure is also a huge special interest of mine. I wasn't overly disappointed with the official kit but obviously it needed a lot more to it.
