Discovered this old post today looking for 3 string ukuleles. I just built one concert scale tuning it to CEG. I’m loving that cords like Bb are now easy where I hated before. I can’t do true diminish 7th cords but trade off works for my old fingers.
Funny that the Russian balalaika, the triangular 3-stringed instrument, has a so called "folk tuning". which is C-E-A, and which is spread aming Russian folk players and differes from the classical tuning A-EE). When I couldn't afford a uke, I tuned a balalaika this way and all the chords worked OK. Then I wodered why the uke had that wierd high G at all!
I heard one which was ADG tuned and I really liked the sound, I also really like the sound of this one. I'm starting to think I just really like the sound of three strings in general. The chords sound different.
Here is the main guide to the 4 string travel ukulele. circuitsandstrings.wordpress.com/2015/06/09/building-a-travel-ukulele/ You only have to install three tuning machines on one side, and made a custom 3 string turnaround.
I bought an actual 3-string uke this summer. I stumbled across a box of them outside a head shop, being sold for $5 each. It was a piece of crap, but playable and fun. I ended up using the same C-E-A tuning.
Not something I would necessarily do, but I like the idea, especially as a trainer for someone who likes ukulele and wants to transition to some three string guitar. Edit: so I started playing one of my ukuleles that had the g string broken and honestly for the song I was playing, usually all the G string did was got fretted so it was the same note as the A string. Honestly I didn't even miss it.
That’s cool that you had an unintentional “no g” ukulele. I knew an older lady that had hand problems that also used a three string uke. This was a special request, so that’s why it’s out of the norm.
I must say, You always have insightfully inspiring videos.
Thank You.
Thanks. I’m glad that you like the videos. :)

That’s great. Do you have any pictures or videos of your 3 string uke?

I never knew that about that balalaika tuning. Thanks for sharing.
Have you gotten used to the high g string?
@@CircuitsAndStrings I tried to, but got myself a tenor banjo, and have been tuning everything CGDA since. And ukes too.
@Oscar S. The Gadget guy Circuts & strings No. 2 yes, and GDAE, mandolin tuning, as well.

Can you please make a five string ukulele?
Nice, I like that you keep experimenting. I built a concert along the lines of you travel uke, thinking of trying a tennor now.
Nice. I’d love see a picture of the travel uke you made.
