I recognized the 6L6 sound right away as I am used to hearing them all the time. EL34's definitely have more mids and less highs - better for gain in this instance IMO. I like 6L6s for edge of break up though!
Thanks man, not a dig i totally get it. Just listening to your videos for all these years you definitely have a “tone” that you lean towards. Thanks for doing these and all the great info!!
Thanks Shawn! Your playing is sooo even and consistent. Hmmm, I've always preferred the more rounded "British tone" of the EL34. When the 6L6 came in, I missed that smoothness. That said, I can understand the attraction of the 6L6, especially in a wild live situation where the nuance of the EL34s might get lost in the shuffle...
So, I got it right even though I was listening on my phone speaker but i guarantee in a live or recorded situation with an entire band playing (especially if LOUD) , I would not be able to tell .... both sounds were incredibly good ... I heard just a touch more low mid push in the EL34s from the first time thru the first riff - sounded Marshall-y to me ... when it was gone on the 2nd sample, I was pretty sure I had it. Would love to hear a clean channel A/B ... also would love to hear the 6L6 amp with a Marshall-y dirt box in front .... also would love to hear same test with PRS or LP
This was very cool, the EL34 tubes where first and the mid frequency spectrum is much more pronounced and compressed. On the other hand the 6L6 tubes have much more low end and highs, both a little over powering. I do like 6L6's in my amps because "EQ"ing these sounds to the mid's sounds better to my ears. The sound is more full spectrum and complex. P.S. This why I feel " mid focused amps" sound less desirable with my guitars! Also love this channel watch it regularly.
Yep. 6L6 tubes can be very bold sounding with a less pronounced mid presence. I dialed the amp based on the EL34 tubes first and then left it that way for the 6L6 tubes.
Nice comparison, thanks Shawn! I had right guess :-) Can you make a third clip where you use 2xEL34 and 2x6L6 at the same time? Generator 100P should support that equally as G120 MKII does.
EL34 have that "I want to jump right in your face while screaming at the same time" tone. 6L6 have a softer tone that sounds more "tamed" to my ears.I love the roaring of the el34❤️
Thank you for that. I am considering buying the Generator 120 mk2. I think I like the el34s. I know they are difficult to source right now and Revv is making the 6L6 the default/preferred tube at this time.
@@RevvAmps ....and I would be ok with either to be honest. The amp is absolutely brilliant. Being Canadian also makes it easier to access the product as well😉.
What it comes down to is the different kind of ‘flavor’ of sound. The EL34 tube will have a more classic sound compared to the 6L6. The 6L6 will have much more of a mid-range presence. It also has a bit more rock sound than its EL34 counterparts. If you are a metal guitarist, the 6L6 may work to your advantage as it can produce a darker tone. The same can be said if you are playing hard rock or punk music. Meanwhile, the EL34 tends to have better harmonics. In other words, it can produce multiple sounds without blending into each other. So the sound will be ‘in harmony’ despite being different from one another. That might be music to the keen ears. And it might be the sound worth appreciating. 6L6 tubes are less scooped compared to the EL4. As a result, they have a flat frequency response. Also, as mentioned before, 6L6 is more American as the EL4 are British.
To my ears, the 6L6 have more pronounced upper-mids presence to it while the EL34 have more pronounced low-mids. Not sure which one can cut more in a live setting or in person, which one do you think cut through more in a mix? I think both sounds really cutting.
It depends on the design of the amp. In this amp, there isn't much of a difference between EL34 and 6L6. For it to cut in the mix, ask the mixing engineer to turn your guitar up 3 db.
Do you add a Resistor? If so, What Value or Voltage are you looking for? If going The Other Way, do you change the Value of an Onboard Resistor, Thanks
Ah very cool....I just picked up " Holy Grail " tube compliment Power and pre For my Tone King Gremlin head Most of these types of demos have been super gain driven So nice touch with the subtler tones Ah ok the 6l6 a bit crisper but not necessarily in a good way 34 a bit darker which leaves Treble Booster options open which is good Most of the other demo's we're so saturated you couldn't really discern much difference Great job Sir...You sure know how to demo properly Well done
Really great tone with that amp and strat, both types of tubes! Thank you.
the 34s have more of a midrange growl! thats how i always distinguished the tone between the two!
Good ears!

Yeah, power tube selection is a personal thing. They all have different characteristics in feel and tone.
With as high as you run the mids it was pretty easy. 6l6’s sounded more balanced with the way the amp was set...
Yes, it's a very personal thing when it comes to tone. You've got great ears!

i got it all wrong ahahahhaha , that's awesome , 1: fatter and full-bodied sound 2: less fatter and more highs.
This is great Shawn, thanks .
You may have guessed wrong but you've got good ears and knew what you were hearing!
Thanks Shawn! Your playing is sooo even and consistent. Hmmm,

Very helpful. Thanks!
First clip sounded more aggressive with more mids I’m gonna guess that was the EL34. Second clip sounded good a little more tame
Correct sir!!

I think at some point I'll be doing that with a G120 MKII.

EL34 wanna sing and sustain and compress, 6l6 wanna chug. It's not just the frequencies, it's how they clip and compress too.
Thank you for that. I am considering buying the Generator 120 mk2. I think I like the el34s. I know they are difficult to source right now and Revv is making the 6L6 the default/preferred tube at this time.
Since the amp was developed 6L6 has been the default tube. If you order an amp you can choose EL34 or KT88 while checking out - it is no problem.

1: a tad fatter in the low mids. 2: a little more open sounding ( extended presence).
Yep!

So which one does Tubbs like better?

First was EL34. Let me see if I'm right by watching to the end of the vid!
Sounds basically the same. Maybe a little more highs on the 2nd track.
wow! I was pretty sure.. but was wrong! haha!
Now you are an authority!! Thanks for watching and for chiming in!
Need to listen through some headphones.....
Through a crap galaxy s7 speaker they sound pretty much the same to me
El34 sound like AC/DC
6L6 sound like Van Hallen
6L6s sound way more "alive" to me.
1st tube = EL34, 2nd 6L6.
To my ears, the 6L6's have lesser hi mids and more treble. But I know for sure that the ears can be some damned liars after a long day.
of course this guy is a prs guy hahaha
I can't think of a stupider riff to test these tubes on.
Whole heartedly disagree with you on this Most of the other similar demo's had so much gain it didn't even matter Perfect riffage for this demo
