My thoughts on the song are: 1. It's in the top 3 Mangini songs I've ever heard. He sounds very fluid and natural in the song. Easily some of his best work. 2. It has a VERY Systematic Chaos vibe, and you're dead on the money about it structured similar to ITPOE Pt. 1, and Pale Blue Dot, almost like it's a combination of the two. That's a good thing! 3. This is the best they have sounded since Mangini joined, and I could not be more excited for the album!
Agreed about Mangini. I feel like Distance Over Time was his true "arrival", because it marked amazing/creative drumming with a killer drum mix that was missing on The Astonishing and DT12. But The Alien is even a level above that as far as the drums go. Might even be his best, but definitely at least top 3 as you said
@@CompleteProducer84 I hesitate saying best when Illumination Theory exists with killer drum fills, and there's some good ones on D/T too. But it's definitely top 3, and we haven't even heard the rest of the album! He wasn't kidding when he said it was his best work.
@@Aetherial-Gamer Yeah it’s going to be crazy! And Illumination Theory + Pale Blue Dot we’re the first ones that came to mind yesterday when thinking about his best drum track, that may round out the top 3. Maybe The Enemy Inside too, been awhile since I’ve listened
DT Sunday....Haven't heard that in so long! As a DT fan for 23 years, I am a tough critic of theirs. So after the first listen of this song, I was underwhelmed. Mainly because I feel like I have heard all of their tricks and tendencies. But all of their songs are growers for me, and I've listened about 15 times now and I REALLY like it now. I like this song better than about half of Distance Over Time, and that's a great sign. If this happens to be one of my lesser-liked songs on the album, this will be an amazing one
I've been a DT fan since 2000 and to me they are the best band in history for many reasons and YES the powerful emotions they evoke is one of those reasons! These were the best sounding drums since Mangini joined, and by far the best mix! Definitely feels very fresh and new while at the same time maintaining a ton of Dream Theater elements!!
Finally Mike Mangini broke free, his drumming is absolutely insane! This is the DT we've been waiting for since he joined the band, I love it! and about the track, the only thing I can say is, if you want to know what DT is, this is the key, The Alien is progressive, heavy, epic and melodic 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Mangini has been adding his talent since the beginning. I’m unsure why people think he’s been caged. Sure, JP gave him a drum map for Turn of Events, but JP didn’t tell him the drums to choose. I do think because Mangini wrote this drum concept/time signature/groove prior to the music, the band had to write to him rather than the other way around. Mangini has always been amazing since his joining.
Nice reaction man. I really dig the song. I want to preorder the new album from Amazon but they're currently out of stock unfortunately, so I may have to wait a bit.

The guy who did Portnoy's drums did this one. Finally giving Mangini some justice to his drumming.

That "crescendo"! Amazing song.
Prediction: Jamie will love it.

It's like Systematic Chaos meets A Dramatic Turn of Events.
I’m liking this song. I definitely hear Systematic Chaos. Nice reaction man.

I have listened to this song about 30 times since Friday. I love it so much
I definitely got a lot of systematic Chaos vibes from it.
A view from the top of the world is the 20 minute epic at the end of the album
Familiar, yet Fresh.... This album might be the one.
John Petrucci sounds like David Gilmour on steroids!!
Man I miss Dream Theater Sundays!
