  • Starting renovation to the old family cabin. The preparation begins for a simple life off the grid in the NH woods. Setting the cabin up so that I can have all the comforts of home without being connected to the grid. I'm heating and cooking with wood as well as vintage gas appliances. I'll have a spring house and a built in icebox plus a gas refrigerator, a battery bank and 12 volt lighting. Living simple and cheap in a backwoods cabin

    MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
    Video of icebox:
    Video of Gas Refrigerator:
    Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

I had the same project JC 18 years ago inheriting my grandparents house built in the late 40's. I remember visiting as a young kid and my grandfather saying, "Let the next guy take care of all the repairs after I'm gone." Well, I was the "next guy" and like you, did it all by myself. Though it's a long, uphill battle, it makes you proud when the project finishes.

I always look forward to your videos, JC. Whenever life in the city gets me down and my finances(or lack thereof) start weighing down on me, you put up another video, and it's a reminder that I too have the power to change my life. Recently, I wrote a poem while daydreaming about my plans to go camping in the fall. I hope ya like it, man. It's called 'A Camper's Daydream'.
With a tarp at my back and pole in hand, I'll catch my main course while beans cook in a can. With belly full from the feast I ate, I'll stare into the fire and contemplate. Time will pass and the crickets shall play, a serenade with owls as the embers fade. And though dreams call with night's kiss, and eyelids grow heavy in smoky mist, I'll not turn in, no how no way, not while Moon dances, when owl and cricket play. But from the radio having his say, will come George Noory and guests joining the fray. Streaming Coast to Coast, tickling my fancy, perhaps he'll interview a witch named Nancy. Conspiracies, hauntings, and bigfoot galore, but ending too soon with me wanting more. But with moon bowing low and crickets in nests, I shall finally roll over and surrender to rest. Morning comes early as I roll out of bed, to sip on some coffee and cook up my bread. I throw in some ham, some fruit and my cheese, and think 'oh man, what a breakfast it be'. With coffee exhausted and a good meal below, I wonder aloud, 'is it time to go'. As I question, I look up and amaze, as the sun sets waves of water ablaze. It's no time for trite lyric or rhyme, I saved for months and spent my last dime. I have no care for what people will say, perhaps I'll stay longer, and lose track of the day. But real life intrudes with worries from home, jarring the stillness with a ring of my phone. I see my mother called, once again to lament. 'My car is broke down and the bills are due. The water smells of brimstone, and it has a brown hue. My computer has popups and NSA placards, and my pool game even runs backwards. Help me Dave, there's even a hacker. Come back soon, I need a tech master.' The word 'roger' is all I can say, for what a bad end... to such a wonderful stay. As I wander slowly and pack my gear, I wonder when I'll be back, tomorrow, or in a year. 'I don't know', I say with a tear, 'but months may pass I'm beginning to fear'. But that won't do, my soul seems to say, I will not suffer another delay. I pee on a stone to mark it my own and say to the heavens, 'this shall be my home'. With a light bladder and a heart more so, I tap on the gas with the tip of my toe. With coffee and bread securely below, it's not quite as sad to pack up and go. Roll back to the city, there's saving to do. It's time to write, so I'm calling my crew. Though it may take two years, or even three, I'll make me a cabin with these very trees. So farewell for now, my forest and flowers, you'll be so missed, I'll be counting the hours. Lydia my truck, shall take me alone, to the house in the city that's no longer my home. So wait for me, my forest and trees, shelter cricket and owl, who visited me. The owl is my neighbor and the crickets my friends, I pray to the Lord, that He will defend. I'll not say good-bye, for I know that implies, it is an ending and I'll never be by. Instead so long, I'll see you again, soon as books sell, and the checks come in.

    Boss,
I always enjoy my visits. Its relaxing and informative. Your helper there seems like great company. You certainly have your work cut out for you. Its amazing how the woods can relax a person who is willing to stop and listen to nature at its best. Most people from the city would probably not hear the relaxing sounds of the birds calling out, the breeze that flows thru the trees, the soft rain drops, dropping thru the canopy. The squirrels chattering at each other. The woods are busy in a way that lulls you into a state of realization of the beauty that the lord freely gives anyone who wishes to enjoy it. My friend you are doing a great job on sharing those gifts with us. Have a great day.
    Your friend,
    Ray

Hey Boss, That was some really good advice. Some of the projects I'm doing right now I ask myself "How are you ever going to get this done". I guess its a labor of love, you do it because you can and it's what you're good at.And in the end you get to spend a lifetime enjoying the fruits of your labor. That ice cooler came out great, and I'm sure that the rest of the cabin will to. Remember Boss you're not working alone Frankie is there to give you encouragement and we will be here to admire your hard work. Just be careful working alone, working alone can get you in trouble sometimes. God Bless.

Boss gotta say congrats on the progress. That's allot for one man. I've jacked up a few in my time. Can't beat the old dry line. Last one i did on patio stone and cinder block. I put three beams. That was a few yrs back and it hasn't moved. The ice box is awesome. Love the iron display and the trash bin. Reminds me of the old potatoe bins. I used to build cabinets. Be proud of what you've accomplished in a short time all alone with no easy access to tools and material. Great seeing the wagon your dad kept. I know you had trouble uploading this one. Wow the ice box project looks amazing, you do such lovely work!!!!! Our parents were the same when it came to paint..lol..back in the 60's and 70's my mom antiqued everything in our house, it was the latest fad back than! it was bluish greenish and streaks of gold in it...lol..and she painted all the pretty wood work in our house! She always said paint was cheap! Oh and my dad put duct tape on his old hunting truck and painted over it...lol..lol..
