@@uRDM also a weird thing happened when I looked up the bhutan national anthem on youtube. The first result wasn't the one featured in the video it was... A bunch of weird, creepy chants with no instrumentation and the second result was like? Yet another song that had the same lyrics as the last one but with instrumentation this time? And neither of them sounded like the one in the video. The only place I could find the one in the video was on wikipedia. Not like it really matters since all three were F tier anthems, but still. @@horricule451 that's... weird. The one I used was from nationalanthems.info. Idk where the guy that runs that website got it from, though. Those other versions sound creepy
I am sorry but ... Why would you rate them from instrumental versions ... Their whole purpose is to be sang... And like " _Kimi Ga Yo_ " is SO inspiring how in hell did it end up in E 😂
That's a difference in opinions, it would seem. I don't give two hecks about the lyrics of an anthem; this is a tier list of the music, the universal language. Kimi Ga Yo might be a beautiful, eloquent poem, but its notes and tune were boring and uninspired, so it got shoved into E.
@@uRDM ok i guess i should rephrase that, since that's subjective obviously. I'd say it's fair to rank the songs based on how they were intended to sound, but you said that only the notes were taken into account so it's fine
Thank you! I know I put in way too much time and effort for a video that virtually no one will watch in full, but I had an idea and i couldnt rest until it was fully fleshed out.
What I like most about Brazil is that we have the national anthem being about our nature, our people, justice, freedom and then we have the independence anthem being a call to arms and mocking other nations. The independence anthem literally says “there were more powerful hands (countries), Brazil mocked them” and “The Homeland shall be free or we shall die for Brazil” and “Amongst all nations of the universe, Brazil is the one to shine”.
@@uRDM That would be too much. The video would be too long, and you did have a point when you said somewhere in the video that the anthem must convey a sentiment just with the notes.
Thank you! I honestly have no idea why people watch all of this video. I really only made it so I could rant; if I myself stumbled across this video while browsing and made the mistake of clicking on it, I wouldn't make it five minutes in. But hey, it seems to be the only video that gets me outside views, so I'll take it!
I never heard of Azerbaijan's anthem before, but I would have to say it would probably be one of my favorites, too. It does resemble the Russian national anthem as well, which is also a favorite. It energizes my Slavic soul (and I'm of Polish descent! lol. Maybe is some of the Cossack ancestry in there). Speaking of Poland, Poland's anthem really, REALLY sounds like a high school pep rally. Some of the Central American anthems (like El Salvador) remind me of "cowboy music" (like the cavlary charge). I get that "Wild West" vibe. The only thing I really disagree with is Japan's anthem, which I actually quite like (although, maybe I'm remembering another version that was a bit faster and higher pitched). Also, I would call Turkey's anthem (could be in my top 10 or 15) "Imperial". It really does sound like a fitting song for a mighty empire. The Ottoman Empire. Italy's anthem sounds like some Tango Dance moves. Great Anthem Dance Battles.
Central American marches remind me of military marches Or it sounds like a 19th century movie scene from a military band or an amusement park. Like imagine women with corsets and dresses and men in top hats, tailcoats or flat caps Let's face it the marches are good because they from 19th century mostly
Fun fact: The brazilian anthem IS INDEED an opera, it was originally written to be a coronation anthem for the monarch, but then it got used to be an instrumental anthem until 1920, with it's modern lyrics
Anthem of Azerbaijan LYRICS: Azerbaijan! Azerbaijan! Oh you glorious motherland of the brave child! We are all together ready to give our lives for you! We are all able to sacrifice our blood for you! Live blissfully with your tri-coloured flag! Live blissfully with your tri-coloured flag! Thousands of lives were sacrificed! Your chest became an arena for battles! Soldiers which gave their lives for you, All of them became heroes! You shall be a garden full of roses! The sacrifice of our souls anytime for you! Never-ending love for you, Has got a place in my chest( The place in my chest!) In order to maintain your honour, In order to elevate your flag, In order to maintain your honour, All the young are eager! Glorious Homeland! Glorious Homeland! Azerbaijan! Azerbaijan! Azerbaijan! Azerbaijan!
As an anthematologist I really appreciate the video! Of course there are some that I disagree with and some I agree with but I liked hearing your reasoning behind them! (Also I of course appreciate the shout out to my site @4:47 and the use of a term that as far as I know I was the first to use (“Latin American epic anthem”), so that’s always pleasurable to see your creation being used. One thing I would suggest is to compare apples to apples - ie have all instrumental so that vocals aren’t affecting judgement (of course it can’t be the other way as a few don’t have lyrics). I love your love of anthems!
Holy crap! I didn't expect the creator of the preeminent national anthems resource to see my video! This is incredible! And yeah, I've gotten several suggestions to make the video better, and they all make sense. If I ever make an updated version, I'll be sure to make those changes, including leveling the playing field with all instrumental versions. Thanks for checking out the video :D
6:55 Cyprus and Greece have the same anthem because they're both Greek nations, two states, one people. The Hymn to Liberty is a pieace of Classical Music, composed in 1823, during the Greek revolution, in the British owned Ionian Islands. It is the longest national anthem in the word, at 158 verses, all of them rhyming. It's a great anthem!
Wow I didn't expected this as an Azerbaijani thank you. Yes our anthem with all versions (vocal, instrumental, orchestra) is so good. But we ar not 9 million we ar more than 40 million. Most population is living in Iran( South Azerbaijan district) bc that was Azerbaijanis who ruled Iran for 1000 years. Qajar dynasty, Safavids were Azerbaijani. But Iran is under control of persians again
And South Azerbaijanis are facing rac1sm there. They can't study in their own language, Azerbaijani journalists gets k1lled and jailed, they are trying underestimate the number of Azerbaijanis there. We hope we can unite with South Azerbaijanis again
Oh, dang. I didn't know any of that, especially the 40 million thing. That's fascinating and a tragedy. Glad to make you happy with the ranking, at least.
as an Azerbaijani I'm honored that people like our anthem. Uzeyir Hajibeyov is one of the greatest composers of his time. Of course, we should not forget Ahmad Javad who has a great role in our anthem.
you have no idea how much I appreciate this video dude Before watching, my favorite anthems to listen to were Azerbaijan, Nepal, Israel, Russia and Monaco (no particular order); now I know a few more. I also just love how you're not afraid to roast whoever you want lol, very genuine content. Laughed out loud at the North Yemen bit, and from the F tier some notable ones to me were Jordan's for sounding like a poor cutscene soundtrack, Eswatini which is confused in its silly way, and The Gambia's for being almost as catchy as the Nokia ringtone.
The Turkish anthem has got to be the best one for me. Not only does it give off an evil and dramatic vibe, but the melodies just draw me in and impress me every time. (I also really adore Italy’s anthem. That’s probably where I’m the closest to being biased because I am also of Italian descent lol.)
In the defense of Bhutan's national anthem, an instrumental version of the song like what is played on Wikipedia doesn't do it justice because Bhutan's National Anthem is very much a song that is made by the vocals.
Btw, the Jordan anthem is actually longer than that (about 2 minutes long). But idk why wikipedia just use the short version of the anthem instead the full one
I think part of the problem is that it’s hard for me to find any recording of North Yemen for my site, the only one was that ... thing. I’m sure there’s better versions out there
@@mafia_gamer_official30973Azerbaijani Turks are also called Azeris in English, it doesn't mean they're Persians, just a shorter version of the same thing

I appreciate your appreciation of the rankings, lol. I'm adding your ranking to my Watch Later now; I'll be sure to check it out to see how our opinions stack up.
Cool video, though the problem with ranking anthems is that you'll always have a bias depending on which precise recording of the anthem you hear, since there's never one single official one, but there's no real way to get around this issue
@@uRDM well I do disagree with you on the rankings. I would like to see what parameters you considered for judging really. Felt pretty arbitrary (dare I say biased?) to me.
Thank you, for the great pleasure of your comments - the Azerbaijan anthem is definitely the best. There is so much energy, passion, life and confidence in the music of this anthem that you can't sit back and wait for mercy from anyone. But you have to fight and achieve justice. And also live, love, raise children and enjoy even the smallest step into the future.
You make a good point; I can't really use length alone as a reason for one to be good and the other to be bad. I guess... it's more like a catalyst. The anthem being thirty seconds long amplifies my feelings about it, because the anthem's statement is much smaller and therefore more... definitive, I guess? If an anthem made a boring initial statement but tried to amend it with a decent bridge or an amplified version later in the song, I would feel better about it. But Jordan makes the one statement, (one that I personally dislike), and just repeats it as if it's enough to sustain an entire anthem. It all boils down to personal opinion, really. I like the San Marino motif, and I dislike the Jordan motif; I think San Marino's is so good that it's enough to be an entire song, while I think that Jordan's is so bad that to assume it could make an entire song is an insult to the listener. Thank you for your insightful comment, this really got me thinking.
Yep. The Israeli anthem isn’t meant to be a patriotic march. It is meant to convey the Jewish struggle to return home, and how fraught with sadness that struggle has been. There are renditions of it in a major key though, that give off a happier tone of seeing the thing our ancestors fought and bled for - autonomy in our land - come to pass at last. Translate the lyrics, though, they’re the most important part.
As I've said, I'm close to Costa Rica. My father was born in a province very close to Costa Rica, so maybe he hath heared more than once the costa rican anthem.
7:30 Slovak Symphony Orchestra's version of the Ethiopian anthem is so much better than Navy Band's (which is what that website you used, uses for their list of national anthems). It's amazing
For Turkish people, our anthem really sounds heroic, and everytime we hear it, we feel proud and patriotic. I cant even imagine hearing my anthem and thinking, "We're so evil hihih" that would be hilarious 😂
HaTikvah - It's about yearning and having hope. We usually play it on Yam HaShoah (Memorial Day for Victims of the Holocaust) and Yom HaziKaron (Memorial Day for Victims of Terror and Fallen Soldiers) or when there's been a terror attack. Some will sing it on Yom Ha'atzmaut, which is independence day, which is why it is about having land that they have yearned for and that they have continued to hope for. (Ode lo avdah tikvatenu // Hatikvah bat shnot alpayim - Our hope is not lost // Our hope of two thousand years) Either way, very good list as most do just look over the national anthem of the Israelis.
Interesting! I never knew the history and depth of it. And thank you! I had to put it pretty darn high; there are few anthems that are brave enough to sound anything other than proud, and Israel's did that while also managing to sound really good.
Respectable opinions you have there, I somehow managed to find your video just by searching 'best national anthems' and after watching it, I must say that it is somehow educational and enjoyable to watch though some parts of the video do make me feel triggered. Most of your rankings were pretty in accord with mine, but seriously, canada’s anthem is like the most generic anthem, its on the same level of australia or the Uk.
Yeah, I was debating putting it in G. I don't remember the specific thought process, but I think I put it in the general rankings just because the chording stood out from the others a little. That might not have been it, I'm not entirely sure.
the dominican anthem may officially be called "himno nacional", it might not be but we have our own name for it, being "quisqueyanos valientes", meaning valiant quisqueyans, or valiant dominicans, basically the first lyric of the anthem itself. i think that it fits the anthem as a whole also lots of the songs have no vocals because a lot are performed by the us navy band
Hey! A guy from sucking "nothing country" of Azerbaijan speaking. Thank you for your admiration of our anthem. But just because you're an average American who doesn't know anything outside your own state, doesn't mean that literate people across the globe don't know where Azerbaijan is. And we don't suck as a country. The same author that wrote the anthem also wrote the first Opera of the Islamic East for the Azerbaijani Democratic Republic which is the first secular and democratic state in the Islamic and Turkic worlds altogether that extended women's suffrage way before the US did it. Don't humiliate any country, talk about your music and just be silent about everything else. Most of the countries you called garbage are older than the continent in which your country was built.

I at first felt bad that Brazil didn't make into the top 3 (especially with the vocals and lyrics taken into consideration) but then I heard Azerbaijan and I was like, ok I get it.
Holy shit this is amazing
I like finding random videos from small youtubers that wind up being really good
:D thank you, dude! Glad to be that surprise!
There's something wrong with Bhutan's national anthem. Don't know what it is.
@@uRDM anthems with vocals won't sound as good as instrumentals though
debatable
@@uRDM ok i guess i should rephrase that, since that's subjective obviously. I'd say it's fair to rank the songs based on how they were intended to sound, but you said that only the notes were taken into account so it's fine

I respect the time you put into this, well done.
Brazil is pretty cool, although I did not know all that about it. Interesting! I never took the lyrics into consideration.
@@uRDM That would be too much. The video would be too long, and you did have a point when you said somewhere in the video that the anthem must convey a sentiment just with the notes.
@@nathandias6771 you are much more understanding than a few other commenters whose countries have good lyrics but placed fairly low, lol
We also have the republic anthem, which is a mockup for our failed political system in the monarchies and pretty much serves to now too.
When Charles Leclerc wins F1, you get to listen to Monaco and Italy's anthems back to back, absolutely beautiful
If he won at Baku (Azerbaijan) it would of been the best thing ever
41:33 minutes long
117 views, time well spent
The thing is...Azerbaijani anthem is older than Soviet-Russian
Central American marches remind me of military marches
Or it sounds like a 19th century movie scene from a military band or an amusement park. Like imagine women with corsets and dresses and men in top hats, tailcoats or flat caps
Let's face it the marches are good because they from 19th century mostly
Fun fact: The brazilian anthem IS INDEED an opera, it was originally written to be a coronation anthem for the monarch, but then it got used to be an instrumental anthem until 1920, with it's modern lyrics
woah, cool! It makes sense that it sounded so good then, ha!
I am from Azerbaijan and yes...we have pretty cool anthem.
As a Trinidadian I didn't expect ours to get so high
Note: it was composed for the united west indies before the countries split

Before watching, my favorite anthems to listen to were Azerbaijan, Nepal, Israel, Russia and Monaco (no particular order); now I know a few more.

Thank you, for the great pleasure of your comments - the Azerbaijan anthem is definitely the best. There is so much energy, passion, life and confidence in the music of this anthem that you can't sit back and wait for mercy from anyone. But you have to fight and achieve justice. And also live, love, raise children and enjoy even the smallest step into the future.
so Jordan's anthem is shit because it's short and repetitive but San Marino's is great because it's short and repetitive?
Translate the lyrics, though, they’re the most important part.
now drive through Glendale with the Chadbayjani Anthem.

Correction - the actual composer of Costa Rica's anthem was Manuel Maria Gutierrez Flores, Jose Maria Zeledon Brenes only wrote the lyrics
