This is beautiful, and you are right, family is the most important. As a mathematics student I also feel motivated to keep researching thanks to my family, although they are not mathematicians, by just having them there helps me keep trying

I used to read & used to marvel at "deep" philosophical babbling of dead "great men" of the past.
This woman truly is many orders of magnitude above those "deep" thinking dead men... from her discovery (in pure mathematics) of the boundary or phase transition between electron conductivity (in conducting materials) and electron inactivity (in insulation materials).... to her understanding that classical Mendelian genetics & subsequent emergence activities (of DNA permutation as a function of time, in a relatively stable ecosystem)... is what is important, in life, in the brief time each of us are allowed our 3B or so heart beats...

Edward Frenkel said in his book _Love and Math_ the reason they discriminated against Jews at the MSU was they were afraid they would take their knowledge to Israel. At the time many Soviet Jews were going to Israel. Unfortunate, since a mathematician is a world citizen more than anyone.
I don't think that's a valid argument. It's probably very easy to find academic records of discrimination against jews before 1945. Israel has been created because of antisemitism, not the opposite.
