While Rust is ultimately responsible for his own actions, this isn't a case where he and Maggie were really attracted to each other and just let that attraction overpower their judgment. Rather, Maggie had no interest is Rust, but aware that she was attractive to him, did all she could to seduce Rust into having sex with her. She did this to get back at Marty - to punish Marty for his infidelity to her. She wanted Marty to feel betrayed the way she felt betrayed. To do so, she specifically targeted Rust because he and Marty were friends (or at least had a good working relationship) with each other. Maggie used Rust so that Marty wasn't merely betrayed by his wife, but also by his partner.

I think they both liked each other & she used him to ‘break’ the bond with Marty- that’s why she isn’t able to get it on with a stranger, she needed someone she felt she had an emotional connection to. That said, they were both in very vulnerable states .. under regular circumstances, this wouldn’t have happened

Maggie certainly had some amount of interest in Rust. She was clearly very attracted to him from the beginning, but it was more of a playful attraction back in 95 as she had zero intentions whatsoever. Rust meanwhile saw her as an expression of what his life could've been had his daughter survived and his marriage lasted, so he was attracted to her as well but obviously had no interest in jeopardizing his partnership. In that moment, Rust was just overpowered by his feelings for Maggie, and guys in general are going to be far more susceptible to in-the-moment seduction. Maggie using him like that to get back at Marty, and destroying pretty much the only thing he had that resembled a friendship, was really really shitty on her part.

this is hypocritical, when both man and woman cheats on each other somehow woman gets away with it easier, imo maggie and rust are both guilty on same level, even more i would add rust has no family and is lonely so this was his steam release, while maggie has family, kids, etc but does what she does despite that...

This show is so next level. The bond between Marty and Rust is unbreakable. Marty took actions that went over the line and Rust immediately had his back. What more can you ask for. Marijke I know you were torn but sometimes you gotta break the rules to get results.

The scene with Rust near the end at the first crime scene. Rust wanted to be seen by people. The spiral nest is an amazing prop for the show. It was not part of the first crime scene, it appears to be new. Meaning the killer came back and left that creepy-looking thing there.
Many perpetrators often visit old crime scenes to relive events and get the rush without having to commit a murder. Truly sick individuals.

Multiple things. She was below the age of consent. She had 2 guys going at her at once. I would assume she was probably also drinking and or high. If they got her drunk, that just ramps up the charges. Then you take a guy with a violent temper and you get some guys getting beat up. in the US, I think most fathers would want to do the same thing. Being a cop in small town, he could probably lean on the DA to drop the charges, especially if they were friends. At the end of the day, taking a beating was far better than the trial bankrupting them, jail and then a rape conviction following them the rest of their lives. As vindictive as the violence may seem, a slam dunk statutory rape conviction would have been far worse.

In the US, being intoxicated is no excuse for crimes, Rust is just lying to the guy. Cops can lie, and do pretty much whatever they want to try and get a confession or any kind of admission that might be used against somebody in court. It's why talking to cops at all is always a terrible idea. I know in other countries, people accused of crimes don't have many rights, and their options at trial can be quite limited if they don't speak, but in the US silence is always the best policy, and a lawyer should do the talking for you.

Age of consent in the US varies from state to state. I don't know, but presumably in Louisiana the age of consent is higher than 16. Some states are 16, some states are 17, and some are 18. There are often close-in-age exceptions where the age of consent is lower if the other person is within a small number of years in age themselves. Again, this varies from state to state.

To answer some of your questions about the guys that were with Marty's daughter:
    1) In the U.S., police can hold you in jail for a maximum of 24 hours for any reason, but unless you are charged with a crime by the prosecutor, they have to let you out. For instance, if you are caught doing a crime, you won't be charged until the prosecutor hears about it and decides whether or not to press charges and that can take up to a day. They were probably being detained but not charged, so Marty gave them the choice of being charged or being beaten up.
    2) Age of consent laws vary state to state here. In most states it's 18, in some it's 16 or 17. They probably did commit a crime per local laws, even if it's not illegal where you are.

      I agree with you.
16 is fine, imo, as long as the older person if they are over 25 or something is not a person of authority who could coerce the minor with power or threats (like a teacher or coach)
Personally in HS in the 70s & 80s *ALL* the freshman girls, who were 14 & 15 dated/went out with the guys who were juniors & seniors (17-19).
Let's face it, plenty of girls who were sophs & juniors (15 & 16) alot totally had crushes & dated or hooked up with college guys as well.
It is natural to be attracted to older more experienced more mature partners as you go through adolescence.
It's also tougher to be a male aged 14 & 15....cause the older guys get all the girls in your year or a bit younger....so you are left with the younger girls who are at that age definitely too young to do too much at 13/12 even though they are looking at you now...
it's definitely why 14-16 year old guys spend their time hoping some fantasy older woman/milf will appear & "educate" them.
Which frankly i also see no problem with.
Yet of course there is a gender difference.
A 14-15 year old girl who a 40 year old man sleeps with would be considered a victim & taken advantage of even if she was consenting.
A 14-15 year old oy who somehow gets the 40 year old "milf"....is lucky. (unless of course he was truly take advantage of or coerced)
I'll admit....when i was an 11 year old boy, if Bo Derek or Heather Thomas had magically appeared naked, in front of me in my room i can assure you if she jumped on me, i would have not felt taken advantage of or victimized at all. My parents though, might feel differently.
But not me. That was the dream lol 🤣🤣

It follows the detectives of the Baltimore homicide unit and the characters in the show are loosely based off real homicide detectives. ~ 19:00 - The age of consent varies state-to-state in the US. It's usually between 16-18 years old depending on where you are. Statutory rape is also generally a strict liability crime - consent is irrelevant, as is a party's belief that their partner was over the age of consent.

Something "meta" to consider when they (Rust and the bad guys) talk about "life repeating itself", "being trapped", "doing the same things over and over again", and "life/time is a flat circle" is that they are talking about being characters in a tv series, on a dvd or blu ray disk. Every time someone watches True Detective S1, they (rust, cole and all the characters in the series) are forced to repeat and relive everything all over again, and never able to change the outcome. They are trapped in/on the "flat circle" which is the DVD/Blu Ray of the True Detective tv series, and can never escape.

For statutory rape the laws vary slightly state to state in America. There's typically an age of consent. Below that is statutory rape. Some states have a caveat if the 'perp' is within a certain age range, like, four years. So, age of consent may be 17, but if one party is, say, 16 and the other party is, say, 19, then there would not be a statutory rape charge.

  • @goldboy150
    @goldboy150 Год назад

Statutory rape is (in many places) when a girl is younger than 18 and the boy is both over 18 and 2 years older. So like if the guy was 18 and the girl 17 it wouldn’t be a problem but if the guy is 20-21 and the girl 16…big problem.
Edit: oh and that’s why it’s “statutory rape” - it doesn’t matter if the girl (or the younger party I should’ve said) is consenting or not. The theory of the crime is that at that age they cannot consent as an adult would and if the other party is an adult they then they should know that.

Age of consent in USA is set by the state. Some states it is 18 or 17 or 16. Iowa where I live is 16.
I think this show is loosely based on the Jennings 8 I think. a series of unsolved women were murdered in Louisiana.

In the US, generally, you are legally incapable of consent until you are 18. And a lot of young (18-22) guys seek out 14-17 year olds and actively prey on them

The perspective in America is that before a certain age, whether under the influence or not- they don’t know enough to be ABLE to give consent because they are too young to know better. So even if she “wanted” to, she is young and impressionable. I believe the age is 17 for men, 18 for women

I’m surprised that you can’t see the motivation behind Marty’s actions regarding his daughter. He’s obviously more conservative a man than you are, but he’s hardly an Alien-or so I would think.
Men don’t want the women they care about to just be sleeping with whoever. This is a form of care. And you may find it antiquated-and maybe it is antiquated-but whether it’s antiquated or it’s not is beside the point. Marty cares a great, great deal for his daughter. And if he’s antiquated about it, then that’s what he is, an antiquated guy. One of the points of the series is to explore what it means to be a man-and specifically contrasting different answers to that question against one another. What is it that gives meaning? Is it family? Is it duty? Marty thinks it’s family, but despite himself he can only find peace in duty. Rust thinks it’s in duty but, because he has lost his family, he needs to lose himself in duty to dull the pain that family brought him. But the tragedy is not that neither of them can stop envying what the other has, but that the world refuses to remember them for their real trials. They remember them as the heroes who saved those kids from reggie ledoux, but for both of them that story is a lie. And for both of them it took a heavy toll. So they’re heroes for what isn’t heroic, but their villains for what *is* heroic-like trying to protect their daughter.
I’m not saying there are any right answers here. I’m just saying this series is a meditation on many things-including masculinity, and what masculinity implies on either side.
Sometimes-indeed, almost always-the good about a person is also the bad. This is the idea that True Detective plays with so effortlessly.

You are a sweet person with an hornets sense of justice. I personally have no issue with Marty blasting the guy. In the end, you just need people of that ilk out of society so they cannot continue to harm others. They’re clearly guilty, the American courts (especially when you see who these guys are connected to by the end) can only mess it up.

@17:40 The age for Statutory Non-Forcible Rape varies by each individual States' laws in the US (so 50 different statutes in 50 different states). While the age of consent is 18 years in the majority of states, it is younger in some. In Missouri where I was a cop in the 1990s the age of legal consent (and also adulthood for crime) was 17. I believe Mississippi and maybe Hawaii (??) used to have the age of consent set as young as 15, however, that may likely (hopefully) have been raised in the last couple of decades. I want to say there was even one State back then where the age was as young as 13.
Some States also have these graduated age scales that kind of always made sense to me. For example, in certain States it might only be a misdemeanor for a seventeen year old to have sex with a sixteen year old or an eighteen year old with a seventeen year old, however, for a twenty-five year old to have sex with a sixteen year old it is a felony. It always seemed a bit unreasonable to me for an eighteen year old to be charged with a serious crime and possibly have to live their entire adult life as a registered sex offender because they had sex with someone three months shy of the legal age of consent. Of course, a lot of those cases were also flatly declined for prosecution where I worked as well unless there was some other aggravating circumstance like use of drugs/alcohol to entice the underaged person or similar. The cases were also almost impossible to successfully prosecute unless the victim was cooperative (which was pretty rare).

it's all in the end a result of the (flawed, human) attempt to keep the law simple and very clear -
even if logically (and morally) there should be a gradual alignment between crime and punishment
e.g. - having sex with someone who is one day underage is not like having sex with someone who is 2 years underage, which is not the same as having sex with someone who is 5 years underage, and so on.
the punishment should match the crime --- but for "time" (or "age") based crimes, that would make the law too complex and might end up requiring complex math equations just to know if what you do is legal or not --- and/or what the punishment for it would be - so most countries opt for very dichotomous laws (i.e. "black & white") even if they end up being absurd or unfair

My personal belief re:Marty executed Ledoux, it doesn't really make me like marty any less as he is unlikable for many reasons already. It is a story so we can be certain about things like Ledoux's guilt, but in the real world it's unacceptable for an enforcer to be an executioner. Laws and protections should extend to even the worst offenders in a civil society. But this brings up something incredibly central to this story, corruption. I really like this show and where it goes. I was frankly surprised at how well it ties up all its ideas and story by the end.

Really enjoy your reactions Mary! True Detective Season 1 is the best TV I've ever seen. It deserves its reputation. Such high quality writing, story and performances. The closest thing to TD Season 1 that I can recommend is Mindhunter (all seasons). David Fincher produced (and directed some episodes). Mindhunter is true crime based stories of serial killers and the formation of the Federal investigative unit created at Quantico in the 1970s in response to the era's horrifying serial killers like Son of Sam, John Wayne Gacy & Ted Bundy. A fascinating 3 seasons that unfortunately won't be continued due to complications that were created by the production problems during the pandemic.
