I really like the concept brought up here. I like that that given the same lesson, the old Sunset Shimmer probably would have used the magic for wielding power over others. Wow, I just thought of another avenue my Sunset Shimmer story could go down. Thank you for posting this.
Reminds me of what Mistmane did in the show. She transferred her magic to restore the beuty in her home land including the ruler. She looked wrinkly and old afterwards yet in reality in nearly cost Mistmane her life.
The control of life and death is quite a philosophical thought. Though in reality, it isn't anything too hard to think about, considering how we have control over it without that kind of magic.
yeah , we have at least "some" control over life , most of that is taking it and we can also bring back sometimes people from death , but its such an extremely short timewindow we have to do so without damaging anything on that one , which had passed . Its a different story with that special spell , because it can turn someone alive again , even if they are longer dead , like that little bird was

One may lean toward in strict observation, and in some cases, preservation while some may decide for themselves. Personal values come into play in an important way. I would lean toward the same caution as celestia because my motives can interfere, though I'm not prone to imposing my values on others.

I am the most trusted person in her world and vice versa. We love each other but not in the affectionate way but rather brother sister love.

i've got a thought about that special spell , would it make sense instead of taking life from someone or someplace else to revive a faded one , or would it also be enough to "share" a part of the casters own lifespan to revive a faded one? or would that be too far off of the topic?
it doesn't work like that, this is about balance I believe, so 'sharing' themself for another would not work, and if it did, the fading person would be half functioning (so in a way they're brain dead but can still walk, but that might be a push). To put it simply, its all or nothing when using the spell, there is no halfway

It's a great story, but a silly philosophical argument, unless you add in one more premise. First, why is it silly... It's silly because the same argument can be made about all agriculture. We use the land to create life (crops), and then take away that life to extend our own. Considering this analogy, one could equally argue that eating anything that had to die in order for you to live, is 'dark magic'. But I don't think that agriculture is bad, and by analogy I don't think that this life magic is necessarily bad. In practical terms, one simply has to farm a 'life crop' (AJ could do it!) in preparation for using that crop to extend the life of ponies. The premise which makes can be used to make a bit more sense of this is the consideration that 'life-force' is a closed system, and life cannot be created or destroyed. This would mean that the sum amount of life-force remains constant. Yes, you can have a baby, but that means that something else in the world will have to die. On the other hand, when somepony dies, that means that life-force is freed up to give something else life. Then the conundrum is how to distribute this limited life resource among many competing species and interests, and it really does become a difficult ethical problem. But then most of the issues which make the ethics of life magic difficult, also make the ethics of reproduction difficult too.

if love makes magic and magic is needed for life that why Celestia and luna can be so old and not age the love of a kingdom and a bit of magic make by everpony for the past 1000 years that adds up to a lot of magic
