- Hi Everyone, While I was working on the Convertible top latch motor repair I noticed some “extra” noise from the Climate Control Unit (CCU HVAC) in our 1995 Porsche 993 Cabriolet. It is actually a super easy repair and in this video I walk you through all the steps. When you get done your little fan will be quiet as a church mouse 😊
Tools and parts:
• Four small Philips screwdrivers
• Normal size Phillips screwdriver
• 7mm nut driver
• Wheel bearing grease
We hope you enjoyed the video. If you did, please give it a “Thumbs up” and Subscribe to Heidi and Franny’s Garage for more videos to come. Also, click the little “Bell” by the Subscribe button to get notified when we release new videos - usually Saturday mornings.

Hey Franny I know you guys have dumped the Germans for boat life but thought you’d be interested to know the following: Years ago I bookmarked this video. Every time I climb into my 993 & hear that irritating whining sound from the fan I promise myself I am going to come back to your video. A couple of months ago my local mechanic told me it was time to replace the climate control unit & quoted $1800 for parts & labor. I politely declined.
This afternoon I watched your video again, drove down to my local hardware store, spent $20 bucks on grease & four tiny star screwdrivers, then followed your instructions. It took me all of 45 mins from start to finish to have the little fan greased and silent again.
In a finger-snap my car sounds like it did 20 years ago again.
Thank you so much!
Thanks Frannie. This will be on the “next project” list
I'm stunned that this little fan is the fan for the Climate Control. What a relief, will get on this during the weekend. My defroster suffers when the fan doesn't work!
You are one of the best presenters
Thanks so much!
Excellent "how-to"! My 21 year old 993 turbo desperately needed this. I watched the video twice and took on the job this morning. 45 minutes, start to finish. Wunderbar! I didn't have short enough screwdrivers to unlock the latches. 2" finishing nails worked great. Size 16D, I think -- the thickest possible. I needed an 8mm nut driver, not 7mm. I encountered lots of accumulated dirt/grime and removed it with brake cleaner and q-tips. I'd recommend stuffing a rag underneath the unit and into the hole when removing it to prevent any marring (I struggled a little to remove the hinged wiring connectors).
Love your videos! Thanks so much.
Thanks Lance for the added info! Very helpful. The nails are a good trick! You might need to do it again in a couple years, but it goes pretty quickly. Great! Glad it worked out!
Lasted 9 months. Need to do it again. What's your take on this aftermarket replacement? I see the note about "an OBD Interior Sensor fan fault code due to the much lower current consumption of this fan. This fault code can be ignored and does not affect the operation of the unit nor the fan." Will that get in the way at smog-check time (I can't imagine it would but want assurance). Will the error code but outwardly apparent (displayed on a gauge)?

Great vid! I just did this. The only trouble was getting my hand up behind the unit to push it out. It is very tight but after repeated efforts I was able to move it. I used four little torx drivers (no. 5-8) to insert into the holes to release the unit. removed the fan without disconnecting the hinged cable connectors. Lubed with graphite and it works great. Thanks for the DIY! It's a big savings over buying a new unit.
100+ likes and 0 dislikes, that is how it is done.
+Nick Murray lol. Your funny Nick. I am assuming if we had more subs like you do, all that would change. Heidi
Franny is the 'ChrisFix' of Porsche/Mini/Ferrari!
+James Wheaton she has a VW beetle video coming up too! Franny will take that as a huge compliment. We both love Chris Fix. She can hold her own on house projects too. Maybe we should start another channel... Heidi
Chris Fix is a favorite of mine! Beautifully done videos that are helpful and fun to watch. That is a very nice complement! Franny
Great video, very clear. THANK YOU! It helped to avoid buying a new CCU by cleaning it like explained. One additional tip : clean the 2 lines of electrical pin with some white vinegar. This will remove potential dust/corrosion in the connector :-)
Well this little trick worked !! Thanks very much for posting these practical and entertaining videos .
Just did this. Easy but my harness is too short. Have to look for that wire tie. Thanks Franny
Another great how to video. Thanks.
Thank you...Thank you...Thank you....the a/c in 964 just stopped blowing cold air halfway thru a trip the other day. I saw your clip and decided to try it. Twenty minutes of my time and a dap of grease and my a/c is blowing ice cold again!!
Thank you for this. I just removed CCU and sending it off for a rebuild/upgrade. Could not have done it without you..
Oh, glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the tip I think every 964/993 owner we've at some point experienced the squeaking fan syndrome and most mechanics don't know that the solution is actually that simple haha !
+pablo carrion I am going to quote you on the Facebook forum of 993 Rennlisters! Thank you very much. Heidi
Heidi and Franny's Garage Absolutely Heidi and thank your gals loving your videos ! I think you have an entire video series on fixing gremlins because that requires love for the cars and attention to detail you certainly have that and these beauties deserve it !
+1. .. Great How-To Ms. Franny! . A big ole Danke Schoen! . 993 owners near & far thank you! . Cheers, a '98 Carrera S (993) original owner, M/S
watching your videos makes me wish I still had my 964
You guys are great! Thank you!
With winter coming you gotta have some heat! Another fine job! I like that you have a nice clean, well lit bench to work on. I hate a messy, dimly lit workbench. When owned by 1977 Targa I would take the Targa top off on sunny cold days here in California, roll the windows up, and crank up the heat with the air coming out in the foot well area. It kept me warm enough even though it was cold out. Well, California cold is not really that cold, but cold enough just the same. Anyway, that made for a real nice ride when the sun was out on a dry day!
mariodesmo we do need heat! Working on that. It’s way cold.
This is another super helpful 993 focused video. My 993 has had this issue intermittently since I bought it in 2012. Since I rarely need to run the climate control, it has not been a top item to fix. Your video is excellent! This is the next fix I plan to do this winter. Please keep producing 993 content!!!!
+James Eli cool. Yea! Glad to hear it. Let us know how it goes once you get to it.
Hi Heidi & Franny - Thank you so much for posting this how-to video. This has been bugging me for as long as I have had my 993 (6 yrs). I watched this video again today for the second time and decided to knock out the repair this afternoon. WHY DID I WAIT SO LNG TO DO THIS? I am so stoked to have the squeal stopped! Thank you for all your Porsche maintenance content - please keep your videos coming, especially the 993 fixes :)
I don’t know. Maybe you were busy? Lol.
Hi James, Super glad you found it helpful! Same thing for me... I'm not a fan of squeaks, buzzes, and noises ;) I do have a few things to do on the 993 so I should take your advice and get to it! Thanks, Franny
Hi girls!
Thanks for another class! - We continue to follow closely here in Brazil!
Congratulations!
That so much! I have something special for all our new friends from Brazil! I'm shooting a video tomorrow :) Franny
É nois Guto, rsrs dica do tonella vale ouro!!! Aquele mustie TB é legal, mas a franny tem a moral TB hein? Muito massa.
Great! Thanks in advance and we look forward to it!
+GuarujaBrazil Franny gosta de ensinar. Fico feliz que você possa se juntar a nós.
Great video and diy tips. My 964 little ACC ventilator apparently wasn't cleaned the last 20 years ...juck.. it needed some maintenance😎
I wish I would have seen this a few weeks ago when I had this pull to remove my lower dash. Not squeaking now, but would have been good to address it while I had it out. Could have also save me a trip to the store for the removal as I have those exactly screw drivers handy too.
Yeah, I wish those videos that would have helped us with something would just pop up too, like a mind readers. There is so much stuff out there now too. Well, you know our channel exists. I suggest you watch any other 993 content that might help you in the future. We have playlists for this reason.
Love my 993. Plan to keep it forever. But they're getting old and need a lot of loving care.
Thanks for this very helpfull video. Please keep it going!!!
Hi Franny,
Another excellent video... Your channel is absolutely fabulous - no fuss or frills just straight up guidance & facts 👍
Keep the cameras rollin’...
Thanks! Will do!
Nice vid...I replaced my fan and CC works perfectly now. Proper temp. maintained!
+tckurth1 wow. Happy to hear that!
I would refrain from using wheel bearing grease as the scent can be pretty strong and the fan will help broadcast it into the cabin. Would prefer Lithium or Silicone grease.
Hey,,, don't for get me. . Signed, Graphite
Hi, excellent job with your videos! Your videos contain clear shots & through steps where others skip steps/info. Keep up the great work👍
+Glenn Wong thanks so much! Franny.
Hi Heidi and Franny!!! Thanks from Brazil!! Love so much your videos!! Thumbs up!!!!
+Victor Penna Thanks so much! Working on a fun Beetle video right now! Should be up in a few days. I hope you will like it :)
Heidi and Franny's Garage here in Brazil Beatle is called by Fusca! When the video comes up, i give a thumbs up!! Thanks!!!
Nice job.
I'm really enjoying your videos. I like your cars, specially the 356, which is wonderfull! Your garage is really nice, nice way to storage the cars!
Thanks for all the detailed explanation about the repairs and your analysis of your cars!
Congratulations from Portugal!
+Romeu Matos wow! That’s great. Nice compliment. I know we need to figure out how to translate our videos into Portuguese, since we got so much support from Marcelo Tonella and all his subscribers. We do love Ms Eva. If you haven’t checked out the four part series of how we got the car, it’s really good. The car has been in Heidi’s family since nearly its beginning. Just look for the story of Ms Eva.
Hi. I already saw the whole story about Ms Eva, actually think I saw almost all the videos about Ms Eva. It's amazing all the work that you had just to have the car, as well as the job that Franny had to get the car running properly. I really enjoyed the Ms Eva analysis, particular the part about the sound of closing the doors :)
Keep going with this nice videos not only about the mechanical procedures and DIY jobs, but also about the road trips, histories and car analysis.
+Romeu Matos thank you. Yes, the rest gives me something to do, otherwise Franny would just be doing DIYs. Lol. Heidi
Your Tutorial is absolut great thanks for your effort👍👍👍
maybe i am a little late..
Great video, i would have loved to hear the sound this fan made in the beginning
Thanks! It sounds just like a small computer fan with bad bearings. Sort of a wobbly squeal...
@@HeidiandFranny thanks for the fast answer! mine does this when i turn my ac on low fanspeed. I thougt the noise comes from the ac fan.
I just put grease on my fan as you showed.
Lets hope the noise is gone.
I suffer this problem in my cabriolet. Your repair procedures seem to be easy to follow.
It is pretty straight forward. Let me know if you have any questions. Franny
Great video. This is a good winter project for me to tackle.
+Steven Greener it is actually fast.
Very nice! The screwdriver tip for unlocking is very helpful. I need to lube fan bearings on a 3.2 soon.
Ohh,... I did that a couple years ago on Shamu. The blower motors in the kick panels? The ones Porsche Classic want's like $450 a piece for? Check out AutohausAZ. They have a replacement motor that you will have to rework the connector at the top slightly, but you can get two shipped for like $120. Search their site for: 0130007081. I tried to re-grease the original motors over and over and never had any luck. Replacing them was much more successful. I was thinking I would pull on to talk about what I did for it.
Thanks for the heads up! In my case it is only the driver's side heat blower and only in high speed. I rarely use it, but one of these days i will pull it out and check it.
Thank you very much.
I could repair it.
Ladies good stuff i enjoy your handy work thumbs up every time. Keep it up for special the Porsche 911. Love to get some more automotive edu i can understand, thanks. Luft.
Thanks for such a great video. this is invaluable to me
Wow! Super glad it was helpful :)
Very good see a woman doing something in these cars..all clean...i love your garage, i stop the video to see...
Regards from Brasil/Portugal.
Thanks you very much! Franny
I'm not surprised. But, I have five sisters; I'm used to it.
Hi Heidi & Franny.. We just purchased a 1991 964 Cab. Same issue regarding the convertible top light staying illuminated after the top is closed. The right latch is a bit funky and does make that grinding noise. Hopefully the replacement of that latch motor or me possibly rebuilding it as you did in your fantastic video will heal the issue. I do have the owner's manual, but not clear if that light stays on all the time when the top is down, and only goes off when the top is safely latched closed. The other gremlins I need to figure out are the seat belt, airbag and spoiler lights are also staying on. Hopefully I can figure those out too.
Congrats on the new car! Yup, all the lights should go out. It was a new thing for Porsche to have all warning lights in one spot so you can quickly glance to see if anything is illuminated. If so, then investigate. On the 3.2s you have to scan around a bit. Sounds like your top latch motor needs a little love 💕 F
Finally got around to doing this. Wasn't able to remove the whole CCU since one of the clips was broken and I didn't want to damage anything further. Wasn't a fun job but no more obnoxious squeaking!
Great job! Congratulations!
+Pablo Araujo thanks.
This is helpful thank you. Try using painters tape to protect the lower dash when you remove the CCU for the win.
That's a great suggestion! Thanks!
Great vid
You can also use a thin gauge metal hanger to remove that unit. cut 2 lengths about 10 inches long and then bend them into the shape of a U that somewhat matches the distance of the holes. Push the U shape tools into the holes, slightly pull the tools away from each other and pull towards you... instant out! :) Hope that helps!
Thanks for doing this video! It's brilliant. I have been wondering what the squeaking sound was coming from my dash and now I know. Ps. you have stronger fingers than me! I found it so difficult getting those cable clips off.
They are SUPER hard to get off! I struggled with it for a bit ;)
Thanks for a great tutorial!
Very nice and helpful video. Thank you for sharing
+Bilal Hazim cool. Thanks.
Great camera work. And very informative..
Thanks so much!
Was hoping you would make this video, thanks!
You bet! Franny
Thank you, it seems clear, I will try to carry out this repair, because I already changed the module at Porsche who indecently did it without explaining to me where the noise was coming from, especially that it costs a fortune.
The only consistent grease I have is motorcycle chain, can that also work?
I'll tell you later how it happened.
Very cool, thanks! How about a vid to explain how to replace the door handle and wing mirror seals? Mine are perished but it’s not obvious how to replace them. Thanks!
Yep. We need to do our door handles too. I don’t have a time line but it is a good suggestion. Thanks.
hi girls.. never tought about a diy on testing/repairing the CCU unit?
I Fran, Heidi and the kitties.
I was hearing a slight sound coming from my heating system.
When I turn the heat or fan to off it goes away.
Now all of sudden I'm getting no heat.
Perhaps a slight bit.
What is the purpose of this little fan attached to the heater control unit?
The electric blower in the engine compartment works as does the heater blower in the dash.
Any suggestions?
Very cool, I had no idea the climate units were made by Hella.
Strange to see less and less Bosch. Pretty complicated little unit! F
Hi Franny. Thank you for an excellent video. Is the temp sensor hard to get to to give a clean incase the fan cleaning procedure doesn't work? Im not getting temp control off the CCU. Thank You Paul
Thank you very much great video, very helpful!
Loud & clear😉 thnx!
Hi, I am trying to control with a multimeter if there is electricity going to the back window defrosting system but where do I have to connect it? I don't see any visible bit to connect my multimeter....
Many thanks, you are really helping with your awesome videos!
Unfortunately, the cabriolet doesn't have the rear defroster :( The connections should be down in the bottom corner somewhere... Next time I see one I'll take a peek.
Heidi
Thanks again!
Great fix! I remember those Blaupunkt tools from a radio my dad had in his Mercedes. Speaking of radios, I don't recognise the Porsche radio. I wonder if this was a US item only. Most 993's I come across here have a Becker unit.
+Freerk de Ruiter this car is pretty original. It has won ‘best in show’ in a local concours. It’s very untouched! Heidi
Happy to hear the car is pretty original :)
I just ran through the Porsche option codes and I think the radio in your 993 is actually a Becker CR-1 unit, which had option code 331. I was confused as it looks more like a Blaupunkt unit without the holes in the corners, but it says Porsche on the little door in the cassette slot.
Where I live in the Netherlands I'm pretty sure a radio was optional equipment back then. If you wanted a radio-cassette they'd install a Becker CR-210, which has a much different look to it. That would have been option code 329. Mystery solved!
+Freerk de Ruiter very cool. Thanks for all the research! Heidi
never heard squeaking from my 993 climate control. is this something that should be done every couple years as preventative maintenance? also i have noticed there is a bit of 'play' with the fan speed dial, when you jiggle it, it affects the fan speed. Is this a precursor to a short? -thank you & great to see #993Porsche posts!
Excellent vid again Franny, tho' I was maybe hoping for a before and after bench test with a decibel app ;-)
Ya know I did film it rumbling a little, but it comes and goes so... Would have been fun to break out the spectrum analyzer though ;) F
Thank you for sharing!!
You bet! F
Is 43 grand too much for a 993 cabriolet in good daily driver condition? I need to have your expertise on this. Thanks for your help ladies. Seems to me excessive?,
Cool!
+steffydog1 thanks.
Great channel! I got here after MarceloTonella ("the king" of VW air-cooled maintenace in Brazil) recommendation. Definitely I will explore your videos. Best regards, Alex
Alex A Castro Hi Alex! Welcome! We have lots of air-cooled goodness on our channel! Great to have you! Franny
how do i know if my fan is failing? What kinds of sound does it make if it's giving me trouble? Nice video!
When you turn on the key (before starting) you'll hear a soft rumble or maybe a squeal. It is a tiny little motor so it isn't that loud, but if it seizes the temp control will get all confused...
@@HeidiandFranny I got the courage up to give it a go and all went just like you showed. I also used a little canned air in the thermister hole too to blow off 25 years worth of lint. Will see tomorrow how it works once i put it all back together! Thanks again.
👍
Gréât tutorial. My a/c doesn’t work anymore. Is this failure may be due to this sensor fan not turning ?
Well, depends... If the condenser is turning in the engine compartment, but the air is not cool, you probably have a leak and are low on refrigerant. If the system is low then you'll need to repair the leak before recharging or it will just go flat again.
Hi, I have cleaned up the sensor fan (lost one small bolt...). Now the sensor fan (glued) is silent and blows 👍, but no a/c cool air is blown in the cabin, amid I do see hot air to the windscreen (condensation).
Great videos, Franny! P.S. I have noticed that halfway thru several I’ve watched, the audio gets slightly out of sync with the video. I’ve read a few fixes for this that you may want to research.
Thanks for that. I went back and looked at the original and it is completely in sync. In the last bit the audio was recorded by the camera so it should be solid. That is strange that you are seeing that. I watch an unrelated taking head video yesterday about Instagram and his voice got a bit off too. I thought that was odd, especially for that type of video. Hmmm... I'll have to look into this a bit. Did you watch it on a PC or mobile? Thanks for the head's up! Franny
Heidi and Franny's Garage I watch your videos on an Apple iPad Pro on my home wireless network. It’s interesting that the issue occurs halfway (or more) thru the video, so I’m assuming it’s due to something taking place during the editing. Your video content, the video quality, and the sound are all excellent, so the issue could be with a codec in your editing program i.e. Final Cut, etc.
I love your Porsche stereo! What model is it?
Thanks! I'm not in front of the car right now... It is the original radio that came with the car. Also, the car has the upgraded sound system option. Not sure if that upgraded the deck or not.
I have a 1995 Porsche 993 and I had my climate controller refurbished by specialized company and my a/c works great but heater still doesn’t blow hot air at all any ideas?
Ha! Love this!
Yea! Franny
Great!
Thanks! F
How where the fuse im check try clear no power on panels
Wondering if you had any tips about getting the plugs on the back of the CCU out. Mine seem to be rather stuck and I don’t want to damage anything
Just carefully... I struggled a bit with that too. IIRC it is pinned on one side and rolls out.
Hi ladies! I’ve been told in a Porsche forum that doing this operation could fix the issue of my 964 air conditioning (it doesn’t make any cold actually), but I don’t see how greasing this fan could help. How do you see it?
By the way, though the switch illuminates and the fuse is OK, my rear window defrosting system doesn’t work either...any idea?
Thank you so much and congrats from a Spanish fan!
Cheers
Hi Santiago, that little fan usually is squeaking and running slow, or maybe not at all. Its purpose is to blow air through the unit so it has a good idea what the cabin temperature is. Otherwise, the thermostat can get confused. My guess is that your AC system either has a leak or needs refilling (because of a leak). Ours is R143a which we can get a recharge kit at the local auto parts store for about $30. For the rear defroster, turn it on and check for 12V at the two terminals on the window element. If you have power, then the element is probably broken. If not, then there is probably a break in the line between the window and the controller. Franny
Heidi and Franny's Garage Many thanks Franny, I will try both. By the way, where is the temperature sensor located? Is it in this same piece, next to the fan? Cheers
Show 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
+Roberto Bernardo 👌thank you!
I have a squeak when I run my fan at the lower speeds, is this the fix? It would be nice to not have to run the fan on high all the time :-)
Your noise sounds more like the actual blower motor. Can you pop your head under the dash and try to localize it?
What is the purpose of that blower?
Just to get the sensor closer to the actual air temp in the car.
EXCELLENT , GREAT VIDEOS. HAVE YOU FACEBOOK ?
Thanks! Yes, just search for "Heidi And Franny's Garage". That should work :)
This video is misleading. I don't know what she has done to her car but in my stock 993 it is not possible to reach under and behind the dash to push out the climate control unit.
Our car is 100% stock - even has the original radio. It is a little difficult to get started, but it will come out.
@@HeidiandFranny I just bought the removal keys for $4.00. My CCU was rebuilt years ago and discovered the rebuilder installed counterfeit blower fan which cannot be opened like Porsche fan. Porsche fan is $285 and fake part is $72. Dealing with rebuilder now.
Great video and diy tips. My 964 little ACC ventilator apparently wasn't cleaned the last 20 years ...juck.. it needed some maintenance😎
