It's a shame to hear that you've been injured at work, and I wish you a speedy recovery! I'm a nursing student, and I moonlight as a HCA at the side to pay the bills. Personally, I have noticed that there's a reluctance to use the handling equipment (hoists and whatnot), and that staff who refuse to manually lift patients and 'carry them' are made fun of and called weak. There's definitely a working-culture issue in carehomes generally, with a definite glorification of personal suffering as you 'suffering for the patients best' and 'going above and beyond'. I have patients who cannot walk, and cannot stand up and yet we are encouraged to lift the patients up by their armpits and then hold the patient up as they 'walk'. There's a 50/50 chance that I have to debate and justify my use of hoists. Yet the people who think that hoists should be a last resort are always the ones with back and knee pain.
