    Okay I just downloaded this for the Amiga, not played it in 20-30 years. I did a 1.35 on hard level with joystick at Pheonix on my first flying lap in all that time.

    I use a gravis analogue joystick for this and it works really well. Fire buttons are gear change, forwards accelerate, backwards brake.

    • @TedMeat
      @TedMeat  2 года назад

      Cool, I also used to play this with a joystick in the 90s before I got my first wheel. If I remember it was also a gravis :) It was quite difficult when you turned the steering assist off but at least you had 100% control of the car!

    Note that GP1 was developed before the age of steering wheels in mind.
    On the PC the first mainstream wheel was the Thrustmaster T1 and was available in around 1993/1994.
    This was a few year after the release date of GP1.
    While GP1 was available on the Amiga I think the racing wheel situation was about the same.
    The first game developed on PC with a steering wheel (T1) in mind is probably Indycar Racing.
    The next generation of games like GP2 & Indycar 2 were developed with racing wheels in mind.
    By that time (1996) Thrustmaster release the T2 wheel which was quality wise much better then the T1 wheel.
    Also around that time other brands released steering wheels although most of the time they were cheap knockoffs.
    I find it actually amazing that it is even possible to use a steering wheel together with GP1. Sure it's not perfect and the game is written for the keyboard controls.
    But the wheel adds another level to the immersion factor.

      I once again have to mention Indianapolis 500 from 1989! ruclips.net/video/U17nCT3yd5I/видео.html
      It's great with a wheel, the car behaves exactly as it should :O Only problem is that pedals are digital, so on/off throttle and brake. But the steering made a huge impression.

    • @g412bb

      @@TedMeat Yes I am aware of it. Would be an interesting question to ask to the developers why it works so well with a racing wheel. Did they have some kind of wheel available or was it just developed with an analog joystick in mind it somehow it translated great to a wheel.

    • @Laahustaja
      @Laahustaja 3 года назад +2

      that would be nice one. I think it would depend on the track since with keyboard you can run 1 rear wing on almost all tracks and get ridiculous top speeds.

    • @TedMeat
      @TedMeat  3 года назад +1

      Yeah I'll do that at some point! As Laahustaja said it depends on the track so I should probably do at least couple of tracks with GP2. One extreme example is Hungary which is horrible with a keyboard because the AI line is very bad and I struggle to get a top-5 there with a keyboard. With a wheel I won a race with flying colors :D

    • @chasm616
      @chasm616 3 года назад +1

      @@TedMeat Keyboard on GP2 makes overtaking super dangerous, the car squirms around a lot as the game wants to force you to drive a certain line no matter what. Also agree with what you said about the track, Monza is super easy on M&K, but tracks like Hungary, Suzuka or even Montreal can be very awkward.

    • @TedMeat
      @TedMeat  3 года назад

      @@chasm616 Yeah the overtaking issue with a keyboard..... When you get behind someone and go for an overtake the "steering assist" suddenly turns off for a second and the car gets very twitchy. I don't know how many times I've crashed like that :D

    Thanks for the edu-vid!

    • @TedMeat
      @TedMeat  3 года назад

      Yeah, it's quite different in this game, I think is specifically designed for digital inputs so although it is drivable with a wheel it doesn't really give you any advantage.

    • @michel403
      @michel403 3 года назад

      @@TedMeat depends of the track. I agree that using the keyboard is faster on Phoenix (especially because the game guides you through the two fast bends, but that's not the case on other tracks. In Monaco (another city track), it's the contrary: the slow bends can be taken at a much higher speed with a wheel because the AI line is so bad.

    "With a keyboard you have to have steering assist on because of the digital inputs" Is that fun? I am playing Revs alot on the C64 and there you have none steering assist and it is great. It just sounds bad that you have to have assist in this game

    • @TedMeat
      @TedMeat  3 года назад +1

      The steering assist actually works very well and it's fun to drive the car. It's a bit restrictive at times but it still feels you're in control and it feels "right".
      I've never played Revs but I'd love to try it out. I tried it with an emulator of some sort some time ago but couldn't figure out the controls :/

  • @antitoria614
    @antitoria614 3 года назад +1

    It’s counter intuitive that playing with a keyboard is quicker. I came across this years ago in NASCAR 2002 which at a favourite track Chicagoland I could get top ten finishes with a keyboard but couldn’t replicate that with a wheel. Lots of different factors in games affect this as well as driving aids, physics model, depth of simulation. Perhaps that’s where I’ve been going wrong for years with my Microsoft wheel. I’d just assumed simulations would be unplayable without a wheel. Wrong again.

    • @TedMeat
      @TedMeat  3 года назад

      Yeah, many sims deploy several assists (some hidden) when racing with digital controls. If you don't get penalized from using them it's certainly possible to be faster. In F1GP it's the steering assist and also you don't get wheel spin as you do with a racing wheel.

    Nice video. As a keyboard driver i approve that. Also, using automatic gearbox didn't allow you to spin your rear tyres, always you had the perfect grip in each turn exit. Is clearly the game doesn't optimized to play with sterring wheel, the keaboard has a huge advantage not only to shift also to turn.

    • @jedlin1256
      @jedlin1256 3 года назад +1

    I remember this track being the least challenging of all. The AI was happy to perform around the current fastest quali lap time ~1:21 -- I think I remember beating them by 5 or 6 seconds (with keyboard or joystick) so your 1:16's sound about right.
    We made our own steering wheels with analogue pots :) They were just a bit naff and I never got round to engineering them into a play-worthy effort.

    • @TedMeat
      @TedMeat  3 года назад +1

      Yeah in qualifying Phoenix is probably the least challenging. In race it might be Monaco because the AI drivers get stuck behind lapped traffic. Oh and in Mexico the AI is also very slow.
      All in all AI is quite slow. I got into retro racing few years ago and did a full season of F1GP with a keyboard and 100% races (that was before I started to do it on youtube). Didn't practice, didn't set up the car and didn't qualify for the races so always started at the back without any practice and won the championship easily. Then I did the same thing with a wheel on youtube and was a completely different story :D
      And yeah I've heard people making all sorts of wheels. Remember someone doing it from one of those old ball mouses. Would be great to try out something like that :D

      To my mind f1gp was in overall an easy game to learn and be competitive in a very short amount of time. this of course has changed in gp2 gp3 and gp4 and. Back in the day i was always using the editor to make the game more difficult. Even today when i play this game i edited via arg editor in order to be more difficult. I disagre a little bit with what you say about the least challenging track.. to my mind estoril was that one.. the ai was terrible slow in the first part of the circuit.. in any case it is a liitle bit a matter of taste

    • @TedMeat
      @TedMeat  3 года назад +1

      @@asterousia I agree. With a racing wheel it's a lot more difficult but AI is still quite slow and without mistakes you probably win every time. With a keyboard it's way too easy if you don't edit the game. Before going on youtube I did a season by myself with a keyboard. Didn't bother to practice and didn't even qualify but started from the back of the grid. Won the championship easily.
