      I entirely agree with your exquisite comments yet Maria's voice started its intermittent unreliability before she met Onassis. The pure terror it must have put her through is perhaps placed inexactly. The film is extraordinary and AJ incarnates Maria in an electrifying, haunting, deeply moving and all consuming performance.

    As a retired singer/musician, who’s had a lifelong obsession with Maria Callas since childhood, and one of the few who are, and loved Pablo Larraín’s movie, I was leery about watching this video. I’m glad I did. You nail precisely what this film does so beautifully, and what is missed by those vilifying Mr Larrain’s refusal to make “just another biopic.“ Countless books, films, videos, etc. fail to capture the broken, tragic depth of loneliness, or the spirit of the woman as Mr Larrain does in his beautifully shot and paced film. Maria Callas has moved beyond mere history and into the realm of legend, and a mythology which can never be explained by so-called “facts.” Somehow that seems appropriate.
    I’m rambling, but so far yours has been the only (of the many) RUclips analyses I’ve watched that understands, and beautifully explains, how some of us saw and feel about this movie. I’ve just subscribed and look forward to hearing your takes on more film favorites I see in your catalog. Again, thank you for sharing this perspective.

    I saw the movie a few days ago and was overwhelmned by it and came away shocked and tearful and vowed to see it again to go deeper into it to grasp the depth of it and I will do that but now having watched this I will watch it with a greater understanding and with an empathy for what was done to Maria, what an extraordinary talent she was and how the awful world of fame and celebrity chews people up and spits them out. As Mark Knopfler said success can buy you a beautiful car but what comes out the exhaust pipe is fame. Maria herself said there was a time when she wished to give it all up and have a family, if only she had had her moment in the Sun and led just a quiet private life, but such were the demands on her and of herself she burned brighter than anyone but then exploded like a supernova, the light that burns twice as bright burns half as long...

    Maria was from a broken home and had childhood trauma. The Starvation, the daily fights at home.. eventually led her to a distrust for human beings.
    Maria was a strong lady.. A Razia Khan II.., literally and metaphorically.

    I have yet to see the film. This video (and presumably the film) includes the unproven speculation that Maria became pregnant by Onassis. It has been determined that this story is false, as Maria had an early menopause and was unable to conceive. So, it is a bit of a disappointment that the "baby" story made it into the film. (Adds to the dramatic storyline I suppose....)

    P.S. Just saw this film and read several reviews afterwards. I liked it more than most, and I liked DIANA too. I agree the whole thing felt opaque and at a remove. Still I think there were fine moments and Jolie had her share. I keep coming back to the idea of this film as impressionistic. If you study too hard at any particular element, it dissipates. But if you stand back and take the whole---it's more than a little effective. Sometimes the dialogue is too precious and Alba R., who plays the maid, has to be a contender for all the worst performance awards of 2024. Her awfulness had me incredulous.

    I haven't seen the movie but plan to. However from the little I've seen in these RUclips video clips I feel Angelina Jolie just doesn't have the class or grace of Maria Callas. She's just too rough around the edges.

  • @frankforster1336
    @frankforster1336 2 дня назад

    If the film was designed to make fun of Callas and to destroy her, it didn‘t work, although it really tried its best.
    The worst dialogues in film history (i hear Maria but not la Callas... An ordinary opera singer comes late, la Callas is always on time), just one-dimensional characters, music that had no relation to the scenes and a main actress who looks the same in every single scene and - sings! Who goes to the movies to hear Jolie sing - in a Callas film?
    At the very end there is one minute with the real Callas - one wonders if nobody of the film crew noticed that this naturally charismatic, complex and - yes, - sweet woman had absolutely nothing to do with the Callas of the film.

    As one of my most favourite broadcasters on RUclips I adore your work, Lucas. However, in this instance I will not watch but leave a comment. I detest this woman. Narcissist Abuser and Parental Alienator. She is irredeemable in my eyes. And in a petty, schadenfreude way I am chuffed to bits this was ignored at the Golden Globes. Thanks for all you do, keep up your excellent work. This one gets a hard pass.

    I wanted to like this yet I couldn't. Maria Callas, La Divina, La Callas was an Exceptional Talent and deserved more than a "Fake telling of her last week of life". This type of film making is Lazy. Lazy in the way of None of it is True therefore B.S.. So exactly what is the point? History is intact, solid, Recorded. Making Crap up because the Director/Writer can't be bothered to do actual research and deliver an Honest Portrayal of an Incredible woman of Immense talent is so Lazy and Disrespectful. This is why the Film Industry is Failing. No Truth. Especially when covering History. Epic Fail. Angelina Jolie gave a meh performance. I actually laughed out loud at the beginning scene, bad lyp synching, especially that lip quiver. This Movie is Crap. Watch "Maria by Callas" if your Truly interested in her and Truth because it's in her own words.... Not Made Up B.S..

      I wasn't see the film, but what if... what if the director tried to use the "Callas" persona as simbol to show the illusory nature of the carrier oriented, independent, strong, "fullfilled" modern woman's life. Like the Barbie film, masquerade as a feminist propaganda, but ar heart a satire of it. Showing what you can get as the independent modern woman, and with what cost. Like Scorsese, who's every film is a sermon (in the most excellent way possible) of a (hu)man searching for/ making sense of life in our post-God world and relativized value systems.
      Not sure if that's what Jolie also wanted, being a strong feminist, but also a mother, but if she made it, she had to agree at least on some degree with the director's point of view. Just a what if...

    • @istvanjano6450
      @istvanjano6450 29 дней назад

      ... Or was just a vanity project of Jolie, in which she can shine as an ageing actress, and found financial backing and a director for it.

    Terrible embarrassing movie. Maybe it would have been better if it was about a fictional opera singer but really not Maria Callas.. because there's enough documented material of her to know immediately everything in the film in terms of her personality is far-fetched and ridicules, putting to shame the great artist and intelligent woman she actually was.

      I watched numerous documentaries where she is inteligent ,strong, accomplished.
      This depressing movie puts emphasis on the period when she is sick, alone and vulnerable.
      There are a lot of wanderfull interviews on youtube, where she speaks in several languages, which represent original Maria Callas, in her best and brightest period.
