As an argentinian, a little more context: Argentina was under a dictatorship (the last one, which was the most brutal one) and, in summary, they had lost all the support from the people, so they decided to invade the islands to regain the support, so it was more like their last resort to keep the dictatorship
My father served in 2 para when he served in the falklands, if he was still alive he would have liked this I think, I’d live to hear a song about goose green ! Im part Argentine, and my opinion on the matter is, the current residents are mostly British of origin, and prefer to be ruled by the British. For Argentina to control the Maldivas again, they would be going against the inhabitants will. I would prefer that Argentines peacefully coexist with those on the island, many of whom had ancestors that first moved there in the 1800s. The history of the island is actuslly quite interesting, has it has switched hands many times, with Britian being the last and current occupier.
Maldivas? We shouldn't care about the will of the islanders, they are an implanted population. The natives were expelled by the British in 1833. Learn history.

Im part Argentine, and my opinion on the matter is, the current residents are mostly British of origin, and prefer to be ruled by the British. For Argentina to control the Maldivas again, they would be going against the inhabitants will. I would prefer that Argentines peacefully coexist with those on the island, many of whom had ancestors that first moved there in the 1800s. The history of the island is actuslly quite interesting, has it has switched hands many times, with Britian being the last and current occupier.
Maldivas? We shouldn't care about the will of the islanders, they are an implanted population. The natives were expelled by the British in 1833. Learn history.
First: the name is Malvinas, not Maldives.
Second: I don't know what the islanders think, but it's not that it's something relevant since they are an established population, it would be different if they were a native people of those islands.

Secondly, the people there are 95%+ in favour of remaining British. To go against that will would be going against the people, international law, and declaring war once again.
The islands are not Argentinian by right, it was a cock and bull story invented so a failing government could try to win some favour by instilling nationalistic fervour.
The people are British by birth, are British by culture, and wish to remain so. What fucking claim do you have other than proximity, because by that logic, Argentina should be under British rule due to their proximity to sovereign British land.

I may be Argentine but personally I believe that the islands are British not because of how the inhabitants identify themselves but because of the fact that the British can maintain them because at the end of the day the flag that flies on the islands is British, not Argentine.

@@AverageMann I am a nationalist but above all I am a realist, repeating over and over again that the islands are Argentine will not make them Argentine apart from the fact that saying that we want them to defend national sovereignty is a lie since we want them for the same reasons as the British who are Because of the resources, they are also a gateway to Antarctica and the fact that who controls them also controls the South Atlantic.
The Falklands Islands are irrefutable British territory, we cannot rely on geography alone to determine whose land they belong to. In the same way that Israel is a legitimate territory, the Falklands are British due to the most important process in history, which were the great European navigations.

If I recall correctly, a British warship was sunk by exocet missile strike?
A bit like the notion some US Politicians floated at the time to lease the UK an Aircraft Carrier (the UK officially declined, though with appreciation for the suggestion), it was a shortage of trained crews to man them.
Same reason why the two then remaining *Tiger class Cruisers* weren't taken along. Their 6" guns and palacial Helicopter facilities would have been useful, but there just wasn't the time to crew & prepare them for deployment.
As it was HMS Illustrious was made ready and sent south with an airgroup, but arrived too late to take part in the fighting... but just in time to relieve her elder sister Invincible, so they could head home to a very warm welcome.
