It's rare that we truly know why an artist created a painting. Over the course of its life a painting history is often lost. We may have a final product but the impetus for its execution may never be understood. Even more rare is when that reason is painted on the front of the canvas as in the case with this Italian wedding portrait. But dating from 1450, is it truly what it portends? In order to answer that question we must first conserve the painting and then discover its mysteries.

Julian: these two people were fairly well known
    Me, a ferrarese: **screaming**
There's a saying in Ferrara: "on this side of the Po river and on the other, everyone is Niccolò's child" ("di qua e di là da Po, son tutti figli di Niccolò")😬🤣
Also I think the Emperor is mentioned because, despite Ferrara technically being property of the Pope, the Este had very much Ghibelline sympathies🤣
The Duchy of Ferrara is not often mentioned abroad when talking about Renaissance Italy in broad terms, but it was as important as Florence politically and artistically, if not more so in some specific fields such us architecture (Leon Battista Alberti was Ercole I's architect).
The walled city in its entirety is recognised by Unesco as "City of the Renaissance".
This painting ending up on the other side of the world and then in McGregor's hands, and then in Julian's, is truly such an amazing story, thank you so much for sharing it with us!

There's a certain point where sometimes you just kinda have to admit defeat and go "this is the best I can do given the tools at my disposal", it is better to do that than sit and beat yourself up over it or do something drastic that may end up being a bad idea later on.
I don't think Julian takes his job lightly and probably considered every alternative before deciding to move on.
It's something everyone in art has to wrestle with, in that sometimes you just have to admit that you did your best and move on instead of constantly striving for better, otherwise you'd be constantly redoing your work and doing endlessly tiny things that would eat up your time and probably never get any progress, all these works of art would just be a blank canvas.

Not saying that Baldassare D'Este could only paint one face, but his portrait of Bolso D'Este is remarkably similar to the face of Galassio II here, and has strong similarities in technique, especially in the allowing of the under-painted canvas to stand in for the shadows and darker areas of the face.

Especially with technology allowing everyone in the world to see them with a clikc of a button. Before they were exclusive to the wealthy. And I think the lack of appreciation of the past is shown through all the bad things these kinds of old paintings go through, especially in the last 100 years or so, when they were bought almost exclusively as status simbols and were taken care of poorly.

I think the most impressive retouching was at 21:21. The way Julian tackled that little patch was very good !

At least for an inexperienced painter like me, that few minutes illustrated what hours of tutorials by others discussed but failed to demonstrate. Yes, it's retouching, but the skills Julian presents are applicable to all painting.

Thank you for posting an owner’s reaction. It’s refreshing to see a fellow artist and art historian, noever how young, take such passion for a piece of art. And to follow through with a restoration of a beautiful painting.

Genuinely so grateful for Julian for taking on this project and sharing it and also for McGregor for wanting to be a part of the project - the mutual excitement, the incredibly old historical painting, the changes the painting went through as it revealed itself... I didn't expect it, but was so excited that I was on the brink of tears when the finished painting was revealed! Honestly this channel is just such a concentration of joy and curiosity.

I had chills seeing the end result Julian, this was the most enjoyable and fascinating conservation you’ve done to date IMO. The added interviews with McGregor and his age and his excitement regarding the painting and it’s history was absolutely thrilling. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone so young ever being so excited about art and art history, it was just a joy to watch thank you so much for all of your hard work I’m sure McGregor will enjoy his painting for a very long time.

My father-in-law is a collector of art. Now he’s collecting “Rostov Enamel”, it’s a unique type of enamel. In Russia it’s called Финифть (finift’). I showed him your channel, and now his eyes are stuck to works you’re working on. I hope he won’t start collecting expensive artworks because you’re are too inspiring 😅

I live close to an art museum which contains a very large collection of baroque art. Your channel, videos and commentary gave given me a new appreciation of art, it's history and backstory. We now are members and visit the museum on a regular basis to go look at items we have researched. Thank you for opening up a new area of interest and allowing me to find a local treasure again.

I’m unsure why so many people are complaining about the Patreon part. While yes, it is disappointing I see no problem with using Patreon in the way you do. The only part I may agree with some people is that it should’ve been clarified from the first episode. Just would’ve caused less issues and apparent heartbreak in the comments lol. It’s just weird seeing so many people commenting with entitlement like you owe them these results. Talking about how they’re unsubscribing as this shows your true colors and such. Kinda funny lmao. Love the videos keep them up man

Agree! So weird to see people so “butt hurt” about not getting the results immediately. He already puts a lot of effort working on pieces for months at a time, let the man do his thing 😂. Pretty sure he’ll show the results at a later time to the public and the people on patreon are just getting first access.
