  • Asia Cottom loved to learn and talked about going to college, even as a child. She dreamed of becoming a pediatrician. So it came as no surprise when she won a National Geographic essay contest for fifth and sixth graders in the Washington D.C. public school system. The prize for her and the two other winners was an exploratory trip to the Channel Islands off the California coast.
But Asia’s life was cut short when she set out on her well-deserved National Geographic adventure. She was on Flight 77 on September 11, 2001. Shortly after the Twin Towers were struck in New York City, the plane Asia was on hit the Pentagon.
Her parents, Michelle and Clifton Cottom, were devastated. Through grief and darkness, they were able to find light. They received hundreds of letters from around the world, quite a few had donations in the denomination of 11 - Asia’s age. Michelle and Clifton turned their tragedy into triumph by creating the Asia SiVon Memorial Scholarship Fund. Their foundation keeps Asia’s spirit alive by helping fund college/university students who love what Asia loved: science, math, engineering and math. Today, the foundation has given $260,000 to 96 students. With each student they fund, they feel like they’re sending Asia to school. That, they say, has provided healing.

I always come back to the videos about Asia and the other victims from her school. It hits home because my 6th grade class went to DC in 97 and I won a writing contest to lay the wreath at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. When I see Asia, I see myself and the other little Blck girls who were my roomies during our trip. Remembering how different airports were and how our parents were able to see us to the gate and I have pics my parents took of us taking off on our cross country trip. It was our first trip without our parents and to have them all the way in California while in DC, Virginia, NYC. It was exciting and I know how Asia and the other kids felt, only for it to become a nightmare. I always keep Asia in my heart though I didn't know her and her loss is still felt by many over 20 years later.❤❤❤

So sad that those babies never got to live and go on their trip. I know she was excited about it. I hate this world so much.

I was just going to say the same.. the amount of evil and hate in this world is unfathomable. This world is not for me. Poor Asia and the other little kids who were the victims of this heinous attack did not get to grow up and realise their dreams!!

I'm so sorry for the three eleven-year-olds to be taken away too soon from their parents and siblings, never getting the chance to the start of their trip. I'm sure they were comforted and embraced by their beloved teachers to the very end. Forever 11 on 9/11.

It's inspiring to see people dealing with such a tragedy in a positive and meaningful way. My heart goes out to her parents...they seem like really lovely people. Asia was only three years older than me.

I was also the same age she was when it all happened. It’s sad the she Bernard, and Rodney never had the chance to live like I did. She and everyone will always have a spirit that will live on.

There is a place called heaven. When a person who dies who was especially close to someone that person goes to Heaven. While its peaceful up in the sky in Heaven and people maybe happy and content. There one small thing. They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth and They each miss someone very special to them who had be left behind. For Asia her special person who she had to leave behind could be her parents Clifton and Michelle or her older brother Isiah or maybe some of her classmate and her friends at her school. Then a day will come in Heaven when Asia will stop and look into the distance. Her eye will be full of intent. Her eager body will quiver and they she will run to her parents or brother or friends. When they meet they will cling in joyful reunion never to be parted again. The happy kisses will rain upon each other faces. Her parents will look into their eyes of their child or her brother will look in to the eyes of his sister or her friend will look into her eyes. So long gone from their life but never absent from each others hearts That point on Asia will be in Heaven with family and friends. together forever.
