Thank you for this, very informative. Our major concern, and reason for not registering, was that the rumours going around was that you will be automatically turned down, because the DBE wants children in schools because they want the money, almost like they are in their minds 'losing money' on school fees due to home education. Also, the whole point of homeschooling is to move at the childs pace, so assessments becomes irrelevant. Feeling much better about this thanks.

Hi Johan, rumours are the biggest issue in undermining a parents confidence. We need the facts so that we can make decisions based on proper foundations. Join the Pestalozzi and keep homeschooling on.

This is very helpful especially when you want to do the right thing... but the right thing for the kids...Jesus said gibe to cecer what belongs to him and to God what belongs to God and our kids they belong to God not cecer

Wendy, I would love to know what that reading program was that helped? In a similar boat.

You have nothing to fear if you are being careful and diligent to homeschool your children in their best interests.

Registration with the department was horrible and they were submissive, I would not register because officials don't understand their role.

They don't know anything. Been through that since 2016 when I went to enquire and came back empty handed, nobody knew anything. 2017when I started and we're not going back.

Hi Azelle, please take some time to read through the articles on our website where we cover registration. Please also be sure to register with the Pestalozzi Trust. www.south-african-homeschool-curriculum.com/must-you-register-for-homeschooling

@AzelleBorchards You are free to use any curriculum or learning resources of your choice. You MUST do what is best for your child. On our Footprints on Our Land website we have an article about how to do a homeschool assessment and how to create a homeschool report to send to the DBE, when required, no matter what learning resources you use.
The DBE places children in grades with their peers by using the child's age minus six years. If you wish to report that your child's ability/skill is at a lower or higher level than the norm, you are free to do so. How they handle the grades and marks etc. is their problem. We have explained to them in multiple meetings that home education is not school-at-home and it does not always easily fit neatly into the bureaucratic admin system designed for the school system! We give customised education to unique children, not schooling en-masse!
Remember that the highest law of the land says that you MUST always make the best interests of the child the HIGHEST priority in all decisions pertaining to the child (Administrative compliance is not necessarily the highest priority or it may not be in the best interests of the child and this is why legal backing from an organisation like the Pestalozzi Trust is recommended.)
