      For some reason, I'm imagining this as a creepypasta where there's that one door in your house that's always closed, but when you press your ear against it, you hear the sound of clickety clacketing and a lot of swearing. There's also a foul odor coming from that room and a weird glow under the door frame that's always there, even in the deepest, darkest hours of the night. You've never been inside this room and you're pretty sure you don't ever want to, but your mother assures you it's nothing to worry about. This is where your 'brother' hangs out. You've never seen this so called 'brother', but she assures you he exists. The reason you have never seen him is because he ventured down a dark path of infinite killing and he's become unrecognizable since then. They're desperate to keep you out of this room for fear of the same thing happening to you, because once this demon sets its claws in you, it never lets go. 'WoW' they call this demon and none who have faced it, have ever returned.

      True, those were some odd times when players did PvE content to get an advantage in PvP while some raiders farmed honor to save gold on their epic mount.

    I got rank 14 in vanilla. If asked if I would do it again I would say definitely not. It just way too time consuming and the dedication you have to put into that grind is insane. You are not the same person afterwards. Just don't do it folks.

  • @mtjt1988
    @mtjt1988 5 лет назад +175

    As someone who spent 6 months doing this for 14-16 hours a day, everyday, I'd consider what's of importance to you lol.
    That said, smashing squishies with a list full of pots and windfury buff on my R14 Arms Warrior after 6 months of grinding was the sweetest crescendo into nerdgasm.
    Are BGs going to be released immediately?
    If so, get a group going right away and grind out constantly. There are honor tracking mods you can use to stagger who gets what rank to make it most efficient, if you work together.
    Generally, if we were vs another group we would just immediately concede to not drag it out. It was kind of bullshit and I wasn't about it, but that's what the group I rolled with decided on, and it was the only way I was going to get R14.
    You can pretty much never stop BGing. How long you have to go depends on how much competition for the spot there is. When I got R14, I got it the same week 3 other people did. It can range anywhere from 4 months to a year.
    If you can get away with other people using your account without getting banned, do it lol. Be warned that this is an easy way to get banned, and can totally fuck up how much honor you're raking in. I never did this but I know a lot of guys did. You could probably solo your way to at least R13 if people take shifts on the account.
    Or you could just wait until AQ and some BWL and get better gear.
    Honestly, if you're after gear, just join a hardcore raid guild and wait till you get to endgame content. You can still pvp on the side. I was in a raid guild that was doing 4-6 hour raids while pvping for HWL, and I had to fuck over my guild and dodge raids for 3 weeks while we were at Nefarius. I was their main fury warrior, and generally top 3 on charts, as well as a dedicated offtank. Make sure you pick your priorities.
    Good guilds are like families with long lasting friends, and you all work together to overcome difficult issues. No better feeling than downing that boss you were stuck on with only 3 people left alive in your 40 man raid.
    Nothing will make you better at raiding than PVP, though. No WoW boss design compares to the reflexes you need and develop inside competing with other people, especially nowadays when people are much more competent at video games than in like 2005 or whenever I did it. When I raided, everything and everyone felt so slow because my alertness was super high.
    PvP is really fun, and spending a lot of time involved in it is very challenging and very stimulating. There's a lot of unique interactions you're bound to have and a lot of high level competition. Nerd boners galore.
    Still, as someone who chased the dream, consider if you're up to sacrificing a highly dedicated 5-6+ months of your life non-stop in order to get the gear.
    It felt fuckin great using it once I got it, but in terms of real life, I turned into much more of a ragey, angsty dungeon troll and completely dissociated from any other facets of my life.
    Vanilla wow was one of the heaviest drugs, and I probably only got off it because the game evolved into something I no longer enjoyed. It's important to remember that these things are temporary and really don't amount to much else in life that you can compound on top of.
    Take care and have fun :)

    • @mtjt1988
      @mtjt1988 5 лет назад +8

      @@fernybern I mean, 1 million plus honor kills is probably going to do something for your individual skillset. In the group I was in, there was still a number of low skill players no doubt.
      Skill helps speed up the process, especially if you're competing against other groups that might have skilled players. You're right that time is more important to the grind.
      I solod my way to R11 or 12, I don't recall exactly.
      I mostly pvp'd in bgs and world just for fun at the challenge of it all. The grind will make you a better player but to be the best at pvp and duels, you really just have to constantly expose yourself to them and push your parameters.
      Once I saw pvp videos of R14 warriors (a class that scaled more from gear than any other at the time) completely stomping, I was convinced that I wanted to go for it.
      Most R14 I knew weren't shit at duels and pvp though lol. The sheer number of encounters you have is bound to increase skill.

I did have some fun in it though, as I was a night elf warrior and while I was moving to rank 14 there was a Tauren warrior who was doing the same. We always made a rule that when we encountered each other in a battleground that we do a salute while in combat in respect. We both also got rank 14 at the same time and congratulated each other. The bad part was while I had to mostly keep up around 40-60k honor every week to help get myself on up to grand marshal, he was having to make 120-160k honor to get high warlord.

    Got rank 14 in vanilla. My pvp team controlled alliance PvP on the server. Each week we would switch off who got Rank 14. The rumors of playing 24/7 are untrue. However, it was a commitment. 10-12 hour days in AB and I was an early riser, so I'd play even more. I think I was 22 at the time, so I didn't have much else going on and I didn't care. I think it took 8 weeks before I was there. No win trading, we'd just steamroll everyone. My favorite memory is beating the top Horde PvP team in AB, and they were so upset they stopped playing for the rest of the week. For a while I was the only Rank 14 priest on the server with all the other warriors and paladins.
    I think it would be impossible to get to Rank 14 on your own.

    What actually happened was that you had 1 premade on each side, both of which dodged each other and only played against (mostly) undergeared and dis-organized randoms. So it just boiled down to how quickly you could cap all 5 points in AB / capture all 3 flags in WSG, while simultaneously farming their graveyard till you're blue in the face. Those that didn't partake in the premade circlejerk ended up account sharing, so you'd run into characters that were literally online 24/7 for months.

    As a neckbeard of the type that did this in Vanilla, you've misunderstood how stacking works. The bottom person in the bracket doesn't ever get the minimum rank points for the bracket, their RP depends on the size of the gap between their honor and the highest honor of the bracket below. You never want to stack everyone in a bracket at the same honor (even if it were possible to do), either; you have the bottom guy serving as the anchor and the rest close together (but no need for it to be exact) above them. So you can get screwed by people going over, but it's mainly only when they push into the next bracket and pass the people who are supposed to be above them.

    Problem with R14 is that the gear is kinda worse than late AQ40 / Naxx even for the melee.
    As an Ele shaman with R11 and full AQ40 set I saw no point in going further, gear was pretty bad compared to what I had already. Not that I even needed the R11 mount, just wanted the title for the looks.
    Also, titles get removed from your list as soon as you de-rank so that's a point to consider as well. It's not like in current WoW, when you can boast your High Warlord for all eternity.
    Sure, you can get to R14 faster than most of the guilds clear BWL, yet you'll get outgeared at some point by raiders. And it's not really possible to raid and pvp on the same toon unless you can literally play 24x7.
    Hope they rework the PvP rewards a bit.

    I was the first Alliance Rogue on Boulderfist to get Rank 14 in January of 06. I worked a part time job but I put in my vacation to be off for my final week so I could go crazy. I ended up getting the top spot but was 2% short of Rank 14. I planned to go to my friend's for 2 days for my bday but canceled as I needed to grind for an extra week. I knew I didn't need the top spot but I was still #5 to be sure.
    Man, that grind was rough. A lot of casters stopped at Rank 13 because the weapon wasn't as big of a upgrade for them. On the outside it seems crazy to stop 1 rank early and not get the weapon or title but when you've done the later few ranks you kind of understand because the last rank alone can take weeks or even a month+ depending what bracket you're in each week.
    I've done a lot of crazy grinds and milestones in my MMO days like Halfling Mask in EQ, Shadowmourne in WoW, Gladiator in WoW, and did a ton of high end raiding as all types of classes/specs over various MMOs and expansions and this grind was the roughest and probably my best achievement. I used to play Magic at a local game store and all my friends said I couldn't do it when I first started my journey. When I finally did it they called my Grand Marshal or "GM" for years. I don't go there anymore but they still refer to me as that when telling stories and talking about people.

    I got to Rank 7 back then I couldn't devote that amount of time to go higher. What made me even more sore was that I sold the gear into TBC with upgrades and the Transmog came much later. Thankfully I kept the mounts and you could buy the older PVP pieces if you ever got the Rank. Respect to the people in who could've made this grind. It required a literal life devotion to get it done and I know quite a few people who were very unemployed at this age in the game grinding that Rank.
    Looking back on it all, I feel that twinge of regret because I feel like I wasted a lot of my life being so wrapped up in WoW for so many hours each day, wrecking my sleep schedule, giving myself acid reflux from the late nights that lasted into the early mornings to another day of rushing to get to work and hook up on caffeine to get through the day...
    I'm happy with it my crappy rank. I can't fathom the stress it was to max.

    Lieutenant-General RopeDrink here. Back in the day, myself and many others helped a chap who was legitimately pushing for High Warlord (and eventually got it). This poor chap had to neglect sleep, life and everything in-between. After all that work, all but the title was meaningless as soon as the game progressed in any way whatsoever. To make it worse, PvP gear really wasn't all that good. Back before resilience was even a thing, PvE gear was still doing infinitely better than PvP alternatives in both PvP and PvE content (and was, arguably, far more accessible). The difference compared to the present, however, is that not many would have had the time or means to fully gear from either content (ie. you were either all-in or you were an unprepared free-kill chump).
    Me? I I loved BG's and PvP more than most and was happy with my epic mount and being a Lieutenant-General - but after seeing what High Warlord did for my friend, I left it at that.

    This was freaking hilarious. I havent touched WoW since WOTLK but vanilla is still some of my fondest memories in 30 years of gaming and Im hyped as F for tomorrows release. Nevertheless I never actually considered hitting 14 back then and neevr will now either. This is NOT what made vanilla such an amazing and unique experience. The world pvp combined with grinding your way to 60 as well as challenging end game raids are what made this game so great. BGs actually always have felt half-baked with AV never actually working properly and people ditching the objectives and just rushing for the general and then Resilience gear came out with BC and totally ruined the game and made everyone look the same and epics didnt mean a thing anymore neither did PvE gear since everyone just rushed for easy broken pvp epics . Classic was and will always be the pinacle of WoW.

    I went for r14 in vanilla and i must say it was some of the best times in any mmo even though it was a brutal grind. Many other games have forced me to mindless pve grind to be able to compete in pvp which is my passion. Bdo is the last game i quit that had great pvp mechanics but no way to progress through pvp. If i try classic again i would like to find a good raiding guild to experience the raids, but i would definitely pvp a lot. Go to r11 casual and go for r14 if there is enough time to put in.
    R14 grind did make people crazy back in the day. One of the founders of my guild kicked me out because he was going r14 at the same time and did not believe two can make it the same week. He was even account sharing when i was not. Fortunately when the word got out about this i was helped by all the good pvprs of the server and i had the whole week instawin bg parties waiting no matter what time i played. I did beat the villain but as i excpected he also got r14 same week. Whole guild disbanded after that.

      All our guild r14 "Monsters of PvP" leaved the game in TBC cause suddenly arena was requiring more skill than grind. I personally think that TBC - WotLK arena reward system was much better than retail or vanilla WoW. I mean, yeah - grinding like there is no tommorow and than getting gear is satisfying, but everyone who can join premade and have a lot of time can do it. While not everyone can get 2 - 2.4k in arenas.

  • @Cruor34
    @Cruor34 5 лет назад

    LOL - R14 in vanilla here. 9:30 is so true. It was a MONSTER grind, was literally painful from lack of sleep and lack of being able to get up and move around. This is one of these things where I say fuck you to the #NoChanges crowd. You didn't do it, I did. THIS needs at least a slight nerf in how brutal it is. Also, no matter how hard you go, even if your account was pvping 24/7 you are capped at 12 weeks to get it. better choice IMO is pvp without going crazy to rank 11, let the insane people get rank 14 (as the video says, if 5000 people can get at least 25 kills, then its 15 a week) so like the first 45 or so hardcores get it, then do a hard push. 70 hours/week might make it after 30-60 really hardcore people get it.
    Also, To the guys saying "I got rank 12/13 I don't need the weapon, I had Ashkandi/Sulf/DEOI" WRONG. 3.8 speed two handers were better, all there is to it. Only MoM (Which I also had) hits harder but it suffers from mace spec, The GM sword could be better if you got a crit and then a lucky sword spec crit for bursting people down. Also, GM long swords were BIS for DW fury until you kill Kel'Thuzad... then the sword has to drop, and then you have to win it.
