    The original lyrics of I Need U were I Need U friend but it didn't flow right so they changed it to girl. This song was a game changer for BTS. It earned them their first Korean music show win and it was almost 2 years after they debuted. Suga said had the album The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Pt. 1 (the album this song is from) didn't do well BTS probably would've disbanded. The song and music video was different from most kpop releases. Kpop was and is still known to be more dance heavy and upbeat music with colorful music videos, so to have a music video that was literally dark in theme and in visuals with no choreography was not what people expected. I mean there is literally murder, domestic violence, suicide, a physical assault, drug use etc. so it stood out against everything that was coming out. Also there is choreography for this song which you should check out if you are interested in seeing the dance to this song. I also want to mention like others have stated this music video is a part of the Bangtan Universe (BTS fictional storyline containing different music videos and other content). The man V stabbed was his father in the storyline and girl he hit is V's sister.

    Believe us when we say there’s a deeper meaning to BTS’s music. First off, this is part of the BU (including Run, that you mentioned). The BU is a whole different rabbit hole that I won’t get into here as it’s very long and complexed. Second of all, on the surface this appears to be a break up song, but it’s more about how everyone goes through their own hardships, but a good supportive group of friends is needed. Which is why u can see that they were always happy when they were together, but on their own they were going through some shit

    • @sam693691
      @sam693691 Год назад +11

      Surprise he caught it immediately, alone they each going through he'll, but together they forget their worries and are happy.

      Theory inbound...
      (Sorry not sorry but it's a theory I just figured out rn)
      If you pay close attention to the song when they are separate or by themselves it's sad and the melody/beat represents that... That their problems that they go thru when alone is disheartening or depressing but when all seven of them are in frame or together and they are being happy the beat/melody changes to go along with that mood that they are happy together because they need each other to continue forward and make or have those happy memories
      So that's why they say "I need u" which is being directed towards the others 6 friends/members
      All the members in the song sing "I need u" together but if we think outside the box we can imagine or see them individually saying that and it being kind of like a call out for help to their friends and to each other to band together to be happy and just have some happy moments together to forget they're horrible lives
      I honestly didn't think of this until right now that I have seen people's explanations on the theory or their own therories

    I think its worth reading into some of the story line behind their characters in the BU (Bangtan Universe), because they really have a whole separate complex narrative that includes moments like the ones in this MV. For example the moment with Taehyung (V), he's actually saving the girl from being assaulted and beat up by that guy and its a part of his character's storyline. A lot of kpop groups nowadays have concepts that they tie into their music and videos, but BTS really were one of the first to create this kind of incredibly complex story that spans across lots of songs and different types of content including games.

    • @marlypea
      @marlypea Год назад +8

      That girl was his sister in the BU and the guy was his father in the BU. The BU is the Bangtan Universe where a fictional story runs throughout some of the music videos and it was said that they will be continuing the story when they return from military service. I also hope that means the drama based on the BU comes then too. Yes, a lot of cakepop groups do this now but BTS was the first.

    Guys, all their songs are not always about girlfriend/boyfriend relationships..majority of the songs are about relationships with parents, friends, society expectations on youths, depression, parents expectations, systematic pressure in school(all this in their society especially), or just a message of love, appreciation, support and encouragement for each other or army's..

  • @ceztlavie

    BTS song "girl" is not only women. Its friend, family , affection, love or society and so on. Depends on your situation. Also, V is not just talking about crime. people make a lot of mistake when they are young. This is happening somewhere in the world. so it means don't ignore them, help them, love them.

    **SPOILER** this is part of their Bangtan Universe storyline. The BI is so complex so I won't even start explaining. :D
    So the song by itself is about the dying relationship between two lovers if you just read it . BUT BUT BUT in the context of the music video, it is about the dying relationship between a young person and basically their youth, happiness, and even life.
    Story. This whole video focuses on each of the BTS members at their worst, as they struggle with pain, depression, and anger. While they may be fine when with their friends, each of the members are completely miserable and vulnerable when alone.
    This song means a whole lot to BTS because this is what really put them on the SK map and got a lot of attention.
    They received a lot of recognition based on this song. And as someone mentioned the original lyrics did not include "girl" but it just didn't flow.
    There is dance choreography during live performances. You guys should watch it.

    This whole video focuses on each of the BTS members at their worst, as they struggle with pain, depression, and anger. While they may be fine when with their friends, each of the members are completely miserable and vulnerable when alone. This came from their own experience as they were struggling hard for success back then. Their company was broke n basically this song was decided as the last one if it wouldn't be a success.

    Their song "Run" is related to "I need U". The third mv (in this storyline) is *"On stage:prologue"* the song is *Butterfly* but is just a remix of the original and isn't the full version. The original mv lasts around 11:57 minutes and it doesn't include an important scene at the end of the credits (for some reason was cut out) but here is the link for the deleted scene: ruclips.net/video/5bqraw0jP4w/видео.htmlsi=YmMVL0O0vX1ZRT3y

    I love how you guys tried to think about the song and make sense, but is more than that :x
    Like in the V scene where he attack that man, in the story line of BTS albuns, this is his father that is abusive with him and his sister, in the scene V sees his sister get hit by their father and yeah, kills him.
    It's a long story. The song was suppost to be "I need you FRIEND", but "girl" sound better.
    In the story line (to make a story short): Jin is the main protagonist. He has this friends, but is gone for two years. When he comes back, everything is bad bad bad. Some of the boys are even d*ed. One misterious voice makes Jin go back in time, before everything is going down the hill and he tries to help his friends. THIS mv is the firt one of the "BTS Universe" aka BU.
    But I really like the way you guys think!

    The "her" is the toxic sense of attachment to something you love that doesn't love you back, each boy represents a different type of toxic attachment, and how we continue to put our heart into something and can't let go, whether it's a bad/absent parent, bullying from peers, money which eludes you, etc....but your friends at this time of life are often your sanctuary. You will understand more as you go through the BU.

    Wow! Love this song and it’s meanings and interpretations! It’s one of many MV for the BU that’s a fictional storyline that goes along with many other MV, books. Webtoons, and can be interpreted in a way the listener wishes. Many ARMY know that they used ‘girl’ instead of ‘friend’ since it fit the melody better. Great reaction as usual 💜👏🇨🇦 Ok. I will spoil 1 thing. When you see them all together it’s their memories of having fun together.

    you have just entered the complicated and confusing BU (bangtan universe). The BU is a fictional stroyline that runs throughout bts's albums. The mvs are all intertwined in some way and tell one story. Each member go through their individual hardships in this storyline and it's intense (but everything they go through is ofc fictional)

    RM has said that originally the lyrics said "I NEED YOU FRIEND" instead of girl, but for the sound of it and commercial reasons they went for it being a romantic song.
    That should give you new clarity on the meaning, as well as the music video.

  • @SknezE
    @SknezE Год назад +2

    Yep. As I mentioned in last comment they had to come back from last album which didn't do that well. (Americans like it now but back then it wasn't a hit in Korea or anywhere) They changed their whole approach to calmer and more thoughtful and serious music. This song blew up!!! It was basically their career maker. The MV had nothing to actually do with the song. It's related to a BTS Universe storyline they started. But fans were so shocked by the video and the song. It was an instant hit that ... I think... got them their first award.

    the reason why this video is so similar to the run one is because they both come from the hyyh era (the most beautiful moment in life albums) and the bu (bts universe), which it's another big rabbit hole

  • @cboz6137
    @cboz6137 Год назад +7

    Yep. This is part of the BU like "Run" was. When an mv seems confusing or difficult to explain it is probably part of the BU. This is more about friendship, that was torn apart and one of them tries to set it right again with alternate timelines but that doesn't quite work (as you would expect) pretty dark and sad, imo. They changed lyrics from friend to girl I think at one point which makes it more confusing since as you can see, it isn't really about a girl. When you get to Blood Sweat and Tears and Fake Love they have a bit of a BU going on there as well. But on the "surface" this is a good explanation video for Blood Sweat and Tears I highly recommend. You will start to see how much goes into their videos that we easily miss when we just look at a song on the surface. ruclips.net/video/5tlgAUE6yjg/видео.htmlsi=46M-vW1e00xNpjJe BTS doesn't do much on just a surface level. Even Yoongi's D-Day tour was so in-depth coordinating flow of songs with the deconstruction of the stage and more all to symbolize the effective destruction of Suga and Agust D persona's by the time it ends.

  • @pslinky
    @pslinky Год назад +16

    3:27 The original lyrics to this were supposed to be "i need you*friend*" but it didn't flow right so it was changed to girl. And the mv is for their bangtan universe, remember if/as you go through the BU that the mvs are the most important factor (every detail means something, even more than in their non BU content lol) but the lyrics usually arent. 😊
    💜
    7:57 this was their 1st mv without dance involved and they were all worried because this is a story building song & they all knew they would have to really focus on acting to sell it, & they were worried it wouldn't be up to par (their acting i mean) like V was saying he'd never been in a fight before, so he was worried about his scene with his "dad" & sister
    8:58 it reminds you of run because they connect narrativly in the BU. This is 1st in the storyline, run is 2nd 😊
    V stabbed his dad because the dad had abused both kids for years and seeing him hit v's sister was too much for him & he did that to protect her

    I really like the way you think about these videos. They are a new prespective really. Single men have seen these videos and gotten something very different but as you 3 guys see these videos you see them as 3 guys who grew up together. It is true the song and video don't seem to match but if you think of them the way you guys did they do. This is the beginning of the BU or Bangtan Universe a seperate story line that the videographer did seperate from the songs.
    Korea has alot of suicide and alot of domestic turmoil. So Lumpens depicts it by giving each of the boys their own story line that is something a young man might go thru in the Korean family.
    A rich young man who's father doesn't want him hanging with his school friends so he sends him away but the young man still thinks of the other 6 and worries how then are doing and how he can help them.
    A young man who's father is sick and so the mother takes them to the country to help his health and the young man must now live on his own and send money back to his parents.
    A young man who's mother is gone of her own will, so now he carries the guilt of losing his mother and how his father can just forget her, he feels the need to join her.
    A young man who's mother couldn't take care of him so she leaves him with a candy bar on his 7th birthday. So he constantly thinks he is ill because he wants to gain attention he never got from his mother.
    A young man who saw a young boy die when he was at an arboretum. It scared him because he never told anyone what he saw so he is constantly seized by the trauma of that day and just wants that trauma to go away. He constantly lies and tells everyone he is OK but of course his hurting himself shows the lie in the statement.
    A young man who is dealing with domestic abuse in the home. At some point he has enough and takes matters into his own hands and lives to regret it.
    And last a young boy who is dealing with bullying by his step brother at home and outside the home but his parents won't believe him so he takes the abuse and as the others leave school he feels alone and loses his support in the other young men to the point he ends up thinking of just letting that car hit him.
    This is all fictional and only part of the videographers ideas but if you fit it with the music it is way more interesting. But you need to be aware that the videos from now on with exception of the English ones are all tied to this story.

    This song and video are the first in the BTS Universe story. It's also one of the first BTS songs that, when combined with the video, can have a number of different meanings or stories to tell. None of interpretations are wrong, of course. It's just different messages that they are telling with the same song and video. On the surface, yes, this is a break up song. However, RM has said that the word "girl" in the song should actually be "friend" but "girl" sounded better in the song. That one word change alters the song from a breakup song to one about a toxic relationship, not necessarily a romantic one. Visually, each of the boys represents a major issue that people often face, especially young people. I won't tell you all of them, because I don't want to spoil anything for you but JK is homelessness, V is domestic violence, Suga is suicidal tendencies, Jimin is depression, and J-Hope is drug addiction. Specifically prescription drugs in this case. The video also shows the difference between public appearances and what's going on behind closed doors and how people may not know their friends as well as they think they do. There is a LOT to unpack in the majority of BTS songs, including this one.

    Just wanted to mention that BTS Army is very respectful of the BTS members' provate life. Of course I cannot read each Army's mind but we don't subscribe to finding out if the boys (they are mostly half my age) have gone out with anyone (dating life) unlike other celebrities' fanbase.
    They may well have used their personal (love) life for their music but they do go above and beyond. And they are all deep thinkers. Even if the three younger members may have been still too young when they began. RM and Suga were incredibly mature even when they began their training circa 2010.
    I say this so that you guys have a little more context when reviewing their music.
    There are a ton of very knowledgeable armys but i suppose i have a slightly different perspective also because I'm Korean but living outside of Korea for the past 20 years or so.
    As many have already mentioned, BTS got their first big award with this album and JK often talks about this song being their turning point.
    P.S. RM does make a comment in the band's last 'meal' together for their channel that since Butter & Dynamite, he became unsure what BTS is about.
    This makes it interesting to see what the bots would do in 2025.

    The MV is the BU, and not telated to the song actually. You will never know when members of BTS were/are dating anyone. S. Korean idols privacy is closely guarded.
    Until one of them personally announces private info, we won't know.

Don't forget to look for MVs that have English Subtitles and completed. 'Cause some of it has deleted part. 💜 And lemme clear one thing, the one you've watched was 'RUN' not 'RUN BTS' cause they're different from each other. And yeah! You're right! It was related to this one cause 'RUN' was the Part 3 of The BU. 🙂

  • @roguechevelle

    Ok so "I Need U" is part of a fictional story that runs through several mv"s (but not all), short films, a webtoon and more. The song originally said "friend" as explained by RM but it just didn't flow good. So just think "friend" instead of girl and the MV will make a lot more sense. And in the story which is called the Bangtan Universe (BU for short) V's character really does stab his father who was beating on his sister, what you see happens in the story. You can tell if an MV is going to be part of the storyline in the description below it will say "BU content certified by Big Hit Entertainment". As one of you mentioned the friends are happy when they are hanging out but when alone they have some real issues they are dealing with. The next MV in the BU is "Run" the first mv you guys watched by mistake, these are the same characters from this MV. Not everything is exactly depicted in chronological order of events always in this storyline (think Christopher Nolan movies but not as extreme lol). I'm glad you guys liked the song, I really love this album "The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.1" as well as the pt.2 album. For each album they usually have a comeback trailer which is kinda like an mv or sometimes actually is the mv for a song which is often an intro song from the album though not all of them have english subs especially the early ones. I'm not sure what list you guys are going from if it's just their Korean MV's but the song "For You" is a Japanese MV which are notorious for getting blocked on youtube, you can still try just wanted to give a heads up. Their original Japanese songs have a different style to them then their Korean tracks, it usually more ballad like but not always. They have some great Japanese songs but I'd understand saving those for later. The next Korean MV would be "Dope" which is not BU storyline. The storyline is pretty complex and I didn't even attempt to get into it until after 6 months of being a hardcore fan watching all their "bangtan bomb" content, their variety show "Run BTS!", and "Bon Voyage" getting to know them well. Some just listen to their music and watch performances or dance practices not ever diving into the fictional storyline which it's very heavy subject wise and can be confusing so I get why.

    Sorry, idk the guy in black cap name, but i get what u tryna say at 11:17 - and yes, at that point of the video, they are depicting self-destruction in all sense, physically, mentally and soul.
    V (in the BU) was the catalyst - murdering the alcoholic guy (or was it his dad) who was abusing his sister, with one of the guy's own liquor bottles that he dumps in their home.

    Finally, you've reach the Bangtan Universe. There's a mobile game, a webtoon as well as notes about BU. I Need You was the start of BTS's success. I love this song so much because it tackles, depression, drug abuse, domestic violence, friendship and the vulnerability of the youth. That's why it became a game changer to BTS. There's also a choreography for this song just in case you want to check it out. By the way, the song which has similar MV with I Need You is not Run BTS. It's just RUN. But they also have a song RUN BTS which was released in 2022 from their anthology album Proof.
