Rivals of Tether is my biggest request for the sequel, in all honesty it brings out a certain childish joy in me to smack a virtual ball around a pole with my friends.
I also believe why Smash is one of the best selling games of all time because even tho its a Fighting Game, theres SO MUCH content on it the average player from any age

And tekken force is kinda halfway its own mode. Id like to see you take a look at the different Tekken force modes at some point
Yes! Finally a video about extra mini games in fighting games and you brought up MK! So many other creators never bring them up. One of my favorites is the challenge tower from MK9. It's had stuff like shooting Cyrax's bomb into moving buckets and shooting zombies coming at Stryker. I don't know why NRS hasn't brought it back.
This is especialy important when these little FUN games (that last bit is important) unconsciously teach you fundamentals, like how hit the targets tests your knowlage of how to traverse with your character and move proprieties, homerun contest teaches how damage affects knockback, and on top of that it has an element of competitiveness between players, leading them to try to improve on those aspects on their own and experiment Even in my game i aim to add unique minigames, one of them is a fight against a mosquito, its tiny, moves around a lot and hits as weak as a real one, it will easly make new players figure out where each move hits and how fast/slow it comes out

It is by FAR the funniest joke I think any fighting game has every had.

I fully agree with this 100%, single player content is fine for initial sales but it won`t help with player retention, casuals will complete it and be done. But with mini games they can have fun for ages. I really think the focus should be on multiplayer fun games, instead of single player content.
Tekken volleyball, soent hours with my bro on that thing. Also world-tour challanege or whatever it was called on SF alpha 3 (PS) coz it unlocked characters.
Idk, I think fighting games are ok being just fighting games, and if you wanna change gameplay, you can just install other games... I love seeing Tekken Ball coming back, but even more shocked that Street Fighter 6 did it first over half a year prior. I like alternative game modes. Fun is why I game, not just dick measuring. I personally prefer modes that still use the fighting game system, like Tekken Ball and what SF6 did more so than, um... bowling. I liked the 3D Mortal Kombat era stuff, like the chess and kart racing. Then there were the modifications in Mortal Kombat X (like dipswitches from SF3:TS or CvSNK2). This made the games fun. Unfortunately, online is "all that matters" to the FGC now, which makes it less about exploring what fighting games can do and just pure competition. Broken, obviously, but hell, hilarious as fuck. It's like gaming lost the point of just being fun. Everything is too serious now, even the genres themselves.
Especially with riot releasing a fighting game soon a lot of the focus has been on the esports side but very few people actually get the chance to compete.

I think it's fair to say that most design decisions in Brawlhalla are polarizing. People are either going to like or hate them. Just the way it is. Personally, I think playing Brawlhalla is a miserable experience, but I'm not going to give anyone trouble for liking it
I never understood the love for these half-baked minigames. Seeing the characters of the main fighting game in them is neat, I guess, but if I wanted a real fleshed out experience for any type of mini game I always felt better served just... playing something else. I hate the idea of development time (especially with how small these teams can be stretched) spent on superfluous modes instead of honing the main core of the game. Guess I just don't get it.
I can definitely understand that, I think some of it has to do with nostalgia and also there are a surprising amount of players who mostly play offline/single player so a lot of these mini games are marketed towards attracting casual players. I agree though if the dev team is already spread thin they should focus on the core game, but I do think it could be beneficial to triple a studios who have enough resources.
Time and scope limitations during the development process. Scopes have grown so far that there is sadly rarely much time/budget/etc to put into side modes - and this goes for pretty much all games nowadays. As such, the side modes you do tend to see struggle to be very substantial - to use smash as an example, I personally feel like the only truly great modes in the series have been subspace emissary in brawl, smash run in 3ds, and world of light (to a point) in ultimate. Pretty much everything else just kinda... sucks. Most of them consist of variants of the core multiplayer fighting mode, but since its against CPUs they just aren't very fun. Multi man smash, classic mode, all star - all are *fine* but few are truly good. Its just a limitation on development resources at the end of the day, so they can only really focus on the core draw mode of the game and nothing else.
I actually have a lot of fun playing Grand Bruise Legends in GBVSR (the fall guys-like minigame lol) it gives you profile cosmetics and money you can use in the main game too. It's very chaotic and wacky and provides a much needed casual break from grinding ranked all day. Queuing up with friends is also super fun, no party invite system but usually we can match together if we queue at the same time about 99% of the time.
I only hope we get more stages soon. Stage 2s really start dragging after a while, especially the survival one, and in general, there isn't all that much variety atm. At least we know the updates are coming though.
My favorite fighting game, Rivals of Aether, has a Tetherball gamemode and an "Abyss" mode, which is essentially a co-op version of Multi-Man Melee where the goal changes with each wave. It's pretty awesome. :]
Most of the time, people really don't play the alternate game modes. So the people that do want them oftentimes just can't find anyone to play with. That's probably the main issue. In DragonBall FighterZ there's the Arena which is directly in the middle of the entire hub. It's huge, it's massive and everyone has to run around it just to access the casual/ranked matchmaking. Yet even on peak hours, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone playing arena matches unless they just booted up the game for the first time or extremely new. Even as someone with over 1300 hours in the game, I still try to play arena matches and maybe I'll find 1 person. And that person is likely to quit because they may not be as experienced as I am.
Because the fgc hates fun. It's all Esports and everything needing to be insanely balanced nowadays. I miss when fighting games had fun and unique single player content. Tekken Force, Chronicles of The Sword, Weapon Master, Konquest, Motor Kombat, and more. We need more single player content in fighting games.
I’m just old enough to remember beating the hell out of the car in (I think?) Street Fighter II as well as the iconic “Test Your Might” brick breaking mini game in Mortal Kombat. Even little things like those would be amazing to have thrown into modern fighting games
the original Tatsunoko vs Capcom japanese version for wii had mini games for all the fighters, and they were really fun, sadly the american version only got the top shooter, what a shame.
my personal favourite for alternative mode probably has to be the subspace emissary from Smash Brawl. Turning smash into a more adventure platformer style game is a great change of pace (Something Spiritfall has also been fun in playing with its roguelike take on smash) and the goofy character interactions with 0 dialogue remind me a bit of old lego games. I especially love playing it with Project M/Project+ installed which just makes it so much more enjoyable and has been a personal favourite way of introducing friends to smash without throwing them in the deep end.
I guess you want a "game of games" games, kinda like roblox but it's about games within a game, as opposed to a list of released games made with one engine for it. I mean, I feel like that should it outside of fighting games too, like shooter games, y'know.
you shoud check JoJo's Bizarre Adventure heritage for the future for psx/DC , it was 2D fighting game similar to SF, but had also story mode representing almost every anime "fight" - most of them weren't regular 1v1 fights, but some weird non-combat duels. this is reproduced in the game using mini-games, for example a poker game, a sidescrolling shooter game, a sidescrolling fighting game, a QTE with dialogues and others, i loved this game, even back then i didnt know much about jojo manga/anime
for me fighting games always had a balancing problem. for example ryu could always instantly do a move while guile always had to charge up 1-2 seconds for a move and so on. sometimes ur opponent wasn't even better, just has a better character. that's why i always enjoyed mk1,2&3 the most, cuz all chars were basically the same, it was true skill back then.
Stuff like what was mentioned in this video is why I quickly dropped King of Fighters XV even though I was super excited for it and pre-ordered the damn thing. When I saw "Mission Mode" I was expecting it to at the very least contain Time Attack and Survival like it did in XIV, but nope, just boring Trials. Granted they added a Boss Challenge mode, but it's a novelty more than anything. You fight a boss that's trying to simulate the "SNK Boss Syndrome" from the arcade times, but after defeating the boss and unlocking said boss, their costume and stage, there's very little motivation to return to that mode. It's essentially akin to a mobile gacha game event. Play, get the rewards, never touch again. Other than that, the game is pretty barebones, modes wise.
But fr tho imagine an evo top 8 mode in sf6 where you had to fight through CPUs trained on Kakeru, Tokido, MenaRD, Punk, and AngryBird twice! That sounds like such a fun challenge
and really, why dont more modern fighting games have mini games like this? like you'd think more mini games would be common, considering how competitive modern fighting games are compared to older fighting games. We need a way to cool off. Normally i just switch games. But what better way to keep us on their games than a good ole mini game lol. (usually once i get off the game, i dont get back on until the next day)
I don’t think free side modes should be the expectation in a world where everybody should have at least one other game to play. Yes, if they exist you’re “technically” not getting off the game as often as others, you’re just playing a different enough game within the same game that still counts to your hours and makes it look like your good because of how many hours you get by also playing the mini game. If anything i just see them as distractions from the main game and only adding fuel to fire of stagnation.
we honestly need fun modes in fighting games, the reason why I leave fighting games for games like overwatch or apex is cuz they at least offer more fun, fighting games is really just competitive to the point that it gets annoying having to learn an 80 hour setup just to win 5/16 matches.
In terms of the story mode thing, Mortal Kombat did that with the konquest mode back in Armageddon and Deception. They were pretty good from what I remember and they had a lot of content, you should check them out!
I wanna know why so many competitive types are so opposed to Single Player content and party modes. Especially before Tekken 8 got released, I saw that sentiment so many times whenever someone brought up story mode n such
I love kung foot on brawl remember it from rayman legends used to play a lot of that game, fun that he and others from the game are in if not characters but crossovers, kung foot goes wild, brawlball and the vollebrawl i think also loads a fun with frienfs

The mini games in the old Tekken games were always on point the volleyball and bowling games me and my friends probably played more than the actual fighting 😂
Tekken did have some fun stuff. The side-scrolling in 3 was fun. Tekken 5 had that awful Devil Within mode, but it was just so dull. You did unlock Devil Jin by beating it but I just went through story mode a whole bunch of times to unlock it. It was the more fun way.
motor kombat is complete ass though i am a fan of arcade racers so i probably set the bar too high lmao i think every mortal kombat game needs test your luck though and it sucks we havent had it since mkx
It’s not really a mini-game, but I wish Tekken would bring back Tekken Force mode. That was really cool back in the day. I totally get where your coming from. I personally don’t care about being competitive with most of these traditional fighting games, so I’d always get bored after a while with the lack of content once the story mode is done.

I agree though if the dev team is already spread thin they should focus on the core game, but I do think it could be beneficial to triple a studios who have enough resources.
you might as well get more game out of your game to keep playing the game you game, right?
Ehrgeiz and Tobal had dungeon crawler RPG modes.
Man homerun derby from smash is top tier
I actually have a lot of fun playing Grand Bruise Legends in GBVSR (the fall guys-like minigame lol) it gives you profile cosmetics and money you can use in the main game too.
It's very chaotic and wacky and provides a much needed casual break from grinding ranked all day. Queuing up with friends is also super fun, no party invite system but usually we can match together if we queue at the same time about 99% of the time.
I’m glad some games have started to take this approach
I only hope we get more stages soon. Stage 2s really start dragging after a while, especially the survival one, and in general, there isn't all that much variety atm. At least we know the updates are coming though.
Holy shit Yomi Hustle jumpscare
real
Does any who plays Tekken 8 knows if the arcade quest mode emulates that arcade mode from Virtual Fighter 4?
someone said ghost battle does
@@typhoonbh Oh, cool! I've only played story mode and offline 2p with a pal since release. Thank you! Your videos are entertaining to watch!
Motor Kombat is the best MK game mode
True
the original Tatsunoko vs Capcom japanese version for wii had mini games for all the fighters, and they were really fun, sadly the american version only got the top shooter, what a shame.
my personal favourite for alternative mode probably has to be the subspace emissary from Smash Brawl.
Playing fighting games is like literally being a D&D wizard, including getting waylaid occasionally
I guess you want a "game of games" games, kinda like roblox but it's about games within a game, as opposed to a list of released games made with one engine for it. I mean, I feel like that should it outside of fighting games too, like shooter games, y'know.
Just saying
Candyman (the yellow guy) is the GOAT
you shoud check JoJo's Bizarre Adventure heritage for the future for psx/DC , it was 2D fighting game similar to SF, but had also story mode representing almost every anime "fight" - most of them weren't regular 1v1 fights, but some weird non-combat duels. this is reproduced in the game using mini-games, for example a poker game, a sidescrolling shooter game, a sidescrolling fighting game, a QTE with dialogues and others, i loved this game, even back then i didnt know much about jojo manga/anime
for me fighting games always had a balancing problem. for example ryu could always instantly do a move while guile always had to charge up 1-2 seconds for a move and so on.
sometimes ur opponent wasn't even better, just has a better character. that's why i always enjoyed mk1,2&3 the most, cuz all chars were basically the same, it was true skill back then.
Broooooo I’m so glad you bring up Motor Kombat cause I was juicing that mode on MORTAL KOMBAT ARMAGEDDON like it was sooooo fun
and really, why dont more modern fighting games have mini games like this? like you'd think more mini games would be common, considering how competitive modern fighting games are compared to older fighting games.
Especially before Tekken 8 got released, I saw that sentiment so many times whenever someone brought up story mode n such
It’s sad with state of mk . If mk locked in for a game as much as sf6 instead of the yearly releases it could probably 30x the playerbase
I love kung foot on brawl remember it from rayman legends used to play a lot of that game, fun that he and others from the game are in if not characters but crossovers, kung foot goes wild, brawlball and the vollebrawl i think also loads a fun with frienfs
nice, ive taken a fat break on brawlhalla a few years ago. sometimes i hop in and see whats up. have roughly 8k hours more or less. was playing since beta.
It was the more fun way.
motor kombat is complete ass though i am a fan of arcade racers so i probably set the bar too high lmao
i think every mortal kombat game needs test your luck though and it sucks we havent had it since mkx
Not to forget good old Tekken-Force Mode..
I would love to see this (especially in other franchises)
i just straight up don’t agree. People barely play these modes. i for one don’t ever touch them.
Why cant fighting games have less fighting game?
Probably doesnt make enough money.
I like the Olympics mode in the neo geo pocket version because you can use your points to unlock new super moves.
Sed thing is that if they bring extra mods they'll more than likely charge us for that
Do people not play fighting games just cause they're fun anymore?
