- In this episode of “Gibson’s Guide to Guitar Setup and Maintenance,” Gibson Master Luthier Jim DeCola demonstrates the proper way to tighten loose controls. This common issue can be simple to repair with Jim’s tips and step-by-step instructions.
Making sure your controls are tightened correctly can reduce the need for future repairs. Most electronic failures are actually mechanical failures. If the controls rotate too much, they can damage or strain the wires. Controls can work loose from frequent use and from expansion and contraction of the wood caused by fluctuations in temperature and humidity. These repairs can be quickly and easily addressed with a few basic tools and Jim’s instructions.

The maintenance and care videos are superb and very helpful. I hope it continues. What if we own Gibson archtops with a floating bridge. Such as an ES 125, ES 175, L4, L5, Super 400 et al. Excellent knowledge and advice from an absolute expert. I love Gibson guitars. Advice? The 1/4 laminate trim bit used to create the fret nibs on the fret board is causing a terrible bumpy look. Please have your fret board people scrap the binding between the frets on the fingerboard when they file the nibs. Love you guys☝️

I bought a new Gibson Les Paul Standard 60s. It arrived with so many problems that I'm seriously bummed. The G-string saddle screw was so loose that the string was making a bizarre sound that mostly went away when I snugged it up.
The high E string has multiple dead/weird ringing, almost howling type of resonance / noise no matter what the setting of the action between 3/64 and 6/64. Neck relief was way out of wack.
The nut is swallowing all but the E and A strings. They should be half-exposed and this nut wasn't reduced at all after cutting the grooves. Grounding wire and the wires coming from the switch to the cavity were touching the plastic cavity cover.
One of the strings exiting the grey lead is exposed before going to a yellow cover-tube and there is some foil pulled back on that grey wire.
There is some sort of paper sticking out from the nut-side of the 7th fret on the base side, no idea what it is, but it's wedged in-between and apparently, beneath the fret.
I sent back a Gibson SG Standard 61 two weeks ago that made a sitar noise from either the nut or bridge.
In the case of this New Les Paul, I don't know if it is the frets or the bridge causing the problem, but at $2600, this is absurd. Really not a happy customer.
how about scratchy pots? i have a 2016 LP Studio, i have to keep spraying DeOxIt in it. works for a little while. thanks

A difficult question for all. Can a KRAMER ASSAULT 220 approach Iommy's sound and if yes, with what means ? Using what tools for that to be achieved ? Anxiius for your respond. Since this brand was bought by Gibson, technicians of them might find it easier to give an answer to that. I might be important , for me you should know.. Cheers to all !
Mr Jim tell me how to get my toggle switch on my brand new LP to not snap back to middle position from the neck position its really annoying, I never knew a toggle could be so springy like this
Back off the switch tip a bit. Perhaps it got screwed on too far, or the switch tip is too long. If it is, you could sand off a little bit of the bottom of the switch tip.
@@nellayema2455 Thank you very much ! I backed it off and that was the problem it was to far down on the toggle shaft and was hitting the burled tightener nut so it was not engaging all the way and would just flip back to middle position.
I have an ES-330 that had the bridge tone knob loose... that was hell to figure out how to tighten up. Would be nice to know if there's an easy way to do it in the future?
Turn the pot backward until it stops. Use something thin in the shaft's split gap (as low/deep as possible) to hold the pot in this position. Then tighten the nut. Do it very delicately, step by step, to not damage the pot's shaft.

What happens when you plug you guitar with the guitar cord and it just keeps getting static? Is it from the jack?
Great video, thank you. The knob on one of the push-pull pots on my LP Standard is too loose on the shaft and even if you pull up gently it comes off. I've fixed this problem on cheap guitars by putting a small screwdriver in the split in the shaft and prising the two halves of the shaft apart very slightly. This is very effective, but it requires a reasonable amount of force and I'm reluctant to do it on my beautiful Gibson; is there a better way to fix this problem or do I just have to be brave and do it (very carefully) anyway? Thanks and please keep this series going, it's really interesting and useful.

Nothing about loose knobs, just about loose pots... And the most important "forgotten nuance" here is to connect the guitar to the amp and check the output jack and all the controls (pots & switches) functionally BEFORE you close the covers ! :D

Speaking of knobs and controls.... I bought a GBL Standard HP brand-new in 2017. The tone pot for the neck pick-up has become unusable. Going down from max to min, it makes cracking sounds about half way, and from that point onwards tone maxes out again and does not change any more. It seems the pot is corroded or short-circuited at that point. Spraying electronic cleansing fluid was of no help. The pot needs to be replaced, but I was told by a local guitar repair person that it is embedded in a circuit and the whole electronics would need to be replaced.
This is terrible. I bought the guitar brand new in 2017 in New York for over $3,000. Now living in Beijing, can't take it back there. Has anyone experienced this and /or has any ideas how to solve this? Can one buy replacement electronics for this model? May be ditch the whole push/pull and deep switch HP thing and install a simple set up? I need to be able to use the tone control!

This "local repair person" is just trying to get money from you, in place of some 20 mins repair replacing one less $10 CTS 500k long 3/4" (19mm) bushing audio taper pot. Find another repair person or do it yourself.
Yeah, that is bullsh!t. You can replace a pot on those PCB's no problem. That "tech" is full of shit. Find another tech, or do it yourself, like G-Point said.
To answer your other question, yes, you can buy the components separately and make your own wiring/control harness.
Or you can buy premade wiring harnesses. There are several aftermarket ones that are really good.
Also, considering you bought it brand new, you could contact Gibson for warranty and see what they say. Good luck !
Why they used a weird knarled ring on the pickup toggle instead of a typical nut I don't know... Everything else has normal nuts

Did I miss the part about loose knobs? What do you do if they turn too easily?
You can cut out a piece of felt to about the size of the knob (ever so slightly smaller) and put that under the knob.
Might need some tweaking on the thickness of the felt. That will give it some friction, causing it to turn less easy.
I used those round pieces of felt you can buy for wooden chair legs. They come in all kinds of sizes and thicknesses.
Works great (imo) and is 100% reversible.

You didn’t go into if your plastic knob is loose on the pot shaft. How do you address that?
I would definitely change the knobs, be sure to get either 6mm or 6.35mm

Well Jim I love your tips and advice. I've been a Gibson les Paul player since 1976 and that 76 is a standard in tobacco burst front back and neck. Why doesn't Gibson burst the backs and necks anymore?. Oh and you can ship that cherry burst right out to me. I've had 7 different les Paul's I did have a cherry burst 81 custom. I swapped out all the black plastics for cream all original parts from geoge gruhn all Gibson parts. Much prettier guitar
