Even the very best pool shooters miss the straight in shots from time too time, I see it all the time. The biggest reason this happens is to do with the english that's put on the Cue ball. The Cue ball is spinning just enough to cause the target ball to turn slightly in the opposite direction, hitting the corner of the pocket. Don't shoot it so hard.
why is there a women's division in pool? other than maybe power on the break, what advantages do men have over women in a sport like this? combat sports, a slam dunk contest, american football.... i get it then, but in pool it's more knowledge than anything. i guess i'll have to look it it up, but are there separate divisions for chess? or spelling bees?

100% correct. When they lose the cue ball and are forced to make shots with English to get back in line, these misses will happen.
