Wonderful! No lecturing tone from you, just a quiet, polite , conversational tone, that is helpful and gentle and so informative. No ego! I’m loving what you do. You are best with you explanations, and encouragement. So glad I found you, just 2 days ago. Thank you so much. Smile more❤
I like your demonstrations not only because of your beautiful versions of reference scenes, but also because while painting you remind us the most important principles (easily forgettable) and many useful tips. Thank you, Malcolm
Your videos are some of the only ones I watch where the painter seems to actually know what they’re doing. You are conscious and aware of what makes a beautiful composition plus and interesting painting. I really appreciate that. Thank you for making helpful videos!
A great lesson to turn an everyday scene into an artwork. I think this is where I am getting the most out of your demos & courses. I always thought you had to find the perfect scene before painting it. Thank you once again!
I really enjoy watching you paint! I appreciate how you can turn an everyday scene into something more special, and your handling of shadows. Every demo reminds me of things I need to look for and work on in my own paintings. Thanks Malcolm!
Finally a reason to begin a change from painting portraits to old street pub scenes. Thank you for the informative and well understood explanations to force me to start new projects.
Really enjoyed this lesson! I think I forgot to blink! I paint too tight and incorporate too much detail in most of my paintings. I keep wondering what’s the point of painting a perfect copy of a scene or picture. Might as well just have the photo. I’m hoping to get to the point of painting scenery with colors, contrast, and feelings. Thank you for teaching me how to do that.
Prior to watching your videos/demonstrations Malcolm, I was putting too much white in my shadows. I had a similar problem another subscriber of yours (said he had been having), whilst painting shadows in concrete/asphalt. It ended up looking too much like water. Your teaching methods I find, are much easier to understand than other art teachers, I have followed in the past. I very much enjoyed your interpretation of this scene. Thanks for sharing it.
Excellent demo Malcolm - viewed it twice as all information you've given is pertinent to how we cope with small paintings (and larger) and your colours are dancing with light and movement. Thank you.
Thank you I learnt a great deal, don;t be afraid to use more paint, lights and shadows, improving my impasto look! I will endeavour to add these tips in my paintings.
Very helpful as I do agree that there is inspiration for painting in what might appear to be a mundane and 'ordinary' local scene and also your style makes colour less intimidating to me.
Even when I think I have done thin layers underneath, I never seem to get such easy clean notes above it. Your oil paints always look strangely easy flowing but at the same time stiff, not running into each other. I'm using watermixable oils (i've experimented with different amounts of medium), would you say real oils tend to have consistency that is easier to work with out of the box?
I do not use mediums with my oils 8ncluding water mix oils. First try brands that have buttery oils straight from the tube eg. Maimeri or Rembrandt. Plus bristle brushes. If you do need to soften the paint then a tiny amount of linseed oil. Use a dropper. That should solve the problem.
Thankyou very much for the demo. Sorry I missed the live one. Whilst I liked the end result of your painting my preference would be to both simplify and keep the picture cleaner overall. Not a criticism of what you have done just a different way of seeing it.
@@MalcolmDewey seriously thank you. I only started painting this year after rotar cuff surgery, I loved it then it became difficult, warm colours cool colours, colour wheel etc, im using acrylics, atelier interactive. You've made sense in the podcasts and I'll take your advise on board.
Man, u won't believe. Was there on Thursday and also took pics for reference paintings. Got really nice pics of the river that flows through Greyton. ( travelled from Cape Town on motorcycle, the nutters way of travelling)
Hi Malcom. I knew all of your 8 tips for greater depth, as I teach them myself. However you presented them in a very clear way with your demonstrations. Great advice. This demo of painting a relatively ordinary subject is one of your best/most helpful. I love how you block in, take it to the next stage & then take your near (but not) finished ptg through what is sometime called the ugly stage to a more refined finish - & the ongoing discussion of what are you painting & why, is truly excellent.
I always thought that it was very important to keep nature’s colors as realistic as possible. Your painting is beautiful yet the value of the grass is way lighter compared to the picture. A bit confused which way to go…

That kind of you to say, thank you
You explain everything so clearly! Thank you Malcolm.

You have a magical hand. You turn ordinary to an interesting painting. Thanks a lot, also for inspirational explainations.
This was an extremely helpful demonstration the way you commented and explained the how and why for your decisions. Thank you!
Thanks Andrea, it's a pleasure
Malcolm, so appreciate you sharing your work and skill, thank you so much!

Who would have thought an ordinary scene like that could be made so beautiful.
Thank you Terrie!
You are fearless! I love it. ❤
Thanks again and again, wonderful world citizen...

Love the way you take the stress out of painting through following logical yet liberating procedures!

Lovely demonstration and got a lot from your explanations of how / what colour values, line and shapes.
Thank you
Amazing! Learnt a lot from your demonstration which most artists do not do.
Excellent, thank you

Great to hear that 😊
Difficult to imagine a better way of spending 32 mins in pursuit of artistic creativity. Very worthwhile . . . thanks so much!
Thank you so much 😀
Love this one!
Malcolm, have you ever explored the use the medium of Soft Pastel?
Yes, I have a few videos on that. Mostly combined with watercolor. I have a Course on that.

Fantastic! Looking forward to watching your demo!❤
I’m learning so much here! Thank you. I’m working on a painting and using thick juicy paint. My cool shadows look lovely against my warm highlights.
Excellent, glad this is helping you 😊
This is very exciting. Thank you!
When you put a horizontal line in the middle I worried. The consequent diagonals made so much sense afterwards!
That one line is always a helpful guide.
Esto es acrílico? Me gusta mucho! Impresionismo...de oscuro a claro. Si puede subtitular en español, sería fantástico!! M. Gracias!👏👏👏👏
Pleasure!
It’s a big help to watch your brush strokes! And I tried the Derwent Graphitint paints at your recommendation. It’s makes sketches more fun. Thank you
Brilliant, thanks

Yes it is

BTW, the mountain isn't, as you claim, "a small little mountain" u dissing Greyton mountain😆
Are you diluting your paint with spirits while painting over existing paint?
No, I don't use mediums except at the very beginning to draw out a composition. From there on out, no mediums.

Why not mix your own orange?
Although I do prefer to mix my own orange I had an old tube almost used up. Waste not want not 😉

As long as the value structure remains in place you can use any colors you want.
