Happened to stumble upon your channel recently and so glad i did! I've always stuck to freshwater fishing and only occasionally do saltwater, but your vids are awesome and have great tips on how to be successful and most importantly have fun while out there. Keep 'em coming!
Nice session Benjie. Always after watching you catch fish like that, I get to get pumped for fishing this weekend.. Thanks Benjie.. 🤙🏽 tight lines Sir.!
Please do a catch clean and cook Vid! I fish out of Newport and Huntington Beach. Just ordered a Piscifun NautiX 4000 reel and I can’t wait to fish a lucky craft on 20lb braid and 15lb fluro!
@@BenjieKimFishing I took a whole bunch of different colors to Cabo, and all of them was a bust, except the super glow. That one caught everything and I eventually lost it on a big jack. It was supposed to be a video on what you can catch in Cabo if you’re only fishing from the shore with light gear. Yep, major camera malfunction, and it was all a bust lol. At least I got my marlin and rooster on video. Like what you do, great videos, and Intel. Happy to be a subscriber. 👍🏻
Dang what a bummer on the camera malfunction...wish I could say it's never happened to me but it has...many times lol. Unfortunately part of what we do. I just subscribed to your channel, I'm looking forward to checking your stuff out. Tight lines!
@@BenjieKimFishing Yeah darn it. Guess I got to take another trip to Cabo lol. Gonna try it again. Headed back to Cabo in June and October. I didn’t think you would have time to respond. Nice of you to take the time. I look forward to all your halibut and croaker action this spring and summer. Be cool brotha 🤙🏻
loving the videos learning a lot! super helpful! I was looking in your videos for what kind of knots you prefer using for your halibut rigs? from your braid to floro, and your floro to clips?
Thanks for the kind comment, much appreciated. From braid to fluoro I tie the RP knot...not saying it's the best but it's what I tie the best...which makes it the best connection knot for me. Fluoro to clip I tie the Palomar, but the SD Jam or improved clinch would be fine. Or whatever your confidence knot might be. Tight lines!
It'll be a little while, still playing around with different options and specs. I'm gonna be testing out a different rod soon but eventually I'm looking forward to doing some reviews comparing all the various options. The good news is that I'm super stoked on these rods!
Went fishing couple of days ago, HalfMoonBay, tried the Lucky Craft first time... I dont seem to be able to cast it a good distance.... when Is it optimal to use it? caz you cant put weight on it or else it defeats the purpose right? do you attach the lure directly to the line? and do you use braided line?
Hi there, best time is calm water, minimal wind. Using the right rod/reel/braid is important as well. In this video I believe I'm using a rod rated 6 to 12, 1/4 to 3/4. And I had 20 pound braid on a 3k reel with 15 lb fluoro leader. I use a 50 pound tactical anglers clip to my leader and remove the stock split rings on my LC's for quick swapping. Practicing your cast will help, it's different than casting a heavy bait and weight setup, snapping through on the follow through seems to help. My average cast is probably about 30 yards but if I've got even a slight wind at my back I can get 50 to 60 yards. I've got a handful of other videos that break down gear if you find that to be helpful. Tight lines!
ya thats what I got... 20pound braided and the 15 leader...I have NOT changed anything on the LUCKY CRAFT... BUT the weather conditions uphere are much different than Central/South Cal... hoping for better days to try again the LURE... the L.C. is not heavy enuf to sink much, ITS NOT supposed to sink much, right? Jerk reel..jerk reel action? @@BenjieKimFishing
I don't have much experience fishing north of Central Coast (The furthest I've fished is Morro Bay) so I can't speak too confidently on how it is up there from personal experience. Central Coast waters are much stronger/rougher than SoCal waters but the LC is still very viable and effective there and I do know plenty of folks who throw the LC with great success further north. All that said, my suspicion is that some days are rougher than others up there (just like anywhere else) and there might be optimal days to throw the jerk bait while other days its probably best to just throw the Carolina or high low. Keep an eye on KJ's (lower the better, down here I look for KJ's under 100 but up there I'm thinking 100 to 200 will be good), wave periods (double digit periods), and swell height (smaller the better). And yes the LC Flash Minnow 110 is a suspending 1 to 2 foot diver but stripers and perch will be all over it even in deeper columns. Halibut is a different story but I don't believe that's as much of an option from the surf up there. Straight retrieve will get you bit just fine up there but you can vary it with a jerk, pause, jerk jerk, pause cadence. I fish negative tides and 2 to 3 ft water columns with heavy reef so I jerk upwards to pop off structure but if you're fishing open water, I'd recommend jerking downwards to get your LC swimming a little deeper. Hope that helps.
haha yea, it was the morning after I caught my 30" up north in November. I think that's it for my old surf footage, should be featuring all the new stuff moving forward unless I'm using old b-roll for a how-to video. Tight lines!
I'm just guessing most of the time. However, some practical suggestions can be the transition from low light to sunny or based on water clarity - clear water/conditions = bright colors, murky or dirtier conditions = darker colors. Hope that helps!
@@xrdangdark profile in dirty water creates shadows and silhouettes in that situation..same goes for light colors in clean water. That’s just what’s been taught to me by other fishermen over the years.
I'm def on the finesse side and please correct me if I'm wrong but I set my drag according to my gear ie rod, reel, line, which is the general rule of thumb. Under that assumption, with 15 lb fluoro the drag should be set at 4 to 5 pounds. Mine was probably 3 to 4 but that's just a guess. I set my drag by feel but I'm pretty consistent regardless in how I set it across the board regardless of target species. My rod in this video is rated 6 to 12 so while it has underrated power, I do keep it light. With that said, I've caught all my PB's with the same setting - 32" halibut, 32" White Sea bass, 30" striper, 40ish" leopard shark, plus multiple White Sea bass at 27", as well as big bat rays. Is it the right way for everyone? Of course not. Everyone's different and has their own preferences that work for them. I've got good friends who are solid anglers that fish with their drag pinned and it works great for them. Tight lines 🤙
