Switched to short scale (got this same bass) and couldn’t be happier. Sounds and plays great and my shoulders no longer get blown out after an hour or so ❤
great video buddy! I totally agree with you. I don't want a bass that costs so much. I just need something to get the job done! Ive always had my eye on these little guys
Been playing long scale basses for over 40 years, recently changed to a short scale for ease of playing (age creaping up) and got one of these. They are fairly well made but need a proper set up and the frets tidying up, swapped the switch for a blend knob, they are more bassier sounding than a long scale bass, they have their own sound. I waiting for a custom one to be made by Maruszczyk but the Fender is a gigable bass.
Hopefully short scale basses will overcome the negativity attached to them (beginner instruments, cheap quality, etc.). A good short scale is much more versatile than a 34" neck. The only advantages of a bigger bass is that you tend to get a bit more sustain and they look a lot bigger, which for many people is important.
Agree its professional quality and the pickup combimation makes it really versatile. I have a long scale bass and this one has almost as much sustain and needless to say, it is super comfortable..
Like I mentioned, it's from the perspective of a non-bass player. I'm sure there are better basses, but if you want something cheap that isn't a total piece of crap, this seems like a winner.
Thanks for a good honest review. I’m a guitar player and wanted to dabble in the bass and this seems the best opinion. Great pickup configuration of the PJ. Love the pickguard. Even love the pickup switch. Typical guitar comment I guess! I’m sold
I think you're switch is backwards, cause from what you described the bridge is supposes to be you'r snappy sound and the neck is suppose to sound bottom heavy.
Just found this. Love that you played Sinister Minister! If I was gonna play bass, it'd be like Victor Wooten. I'm in the same boat as you. Guitarist with a bit of a short reach! Can say though that you may want to try a J-bass. I'm looking to buy another and regret selling my old one. I didn't find the stretches so bad, but then again I prefer my Les to my Strat because of scale... so maybe I need a Jaguar? Happy guitar hunting!
I gotta speak for Squiers. I used to think they were trash until I bought one. I played a Fender P-Bass for most of my career (bassist), and sold it to buy a Squier Affinity J-Bass. It has been excellent. The quality is great and it sounds good enough for my stage gig needs. I then bought a Squier Jaguar SS (30" short scale) and learned two things 1) I'll never buy long scale again. 2) Squier has come a long way in quality. This instrument has impressive workmanship for its price range. It stays perfectly in tune even after weeks without adjustment. The sound (with the P-bass neck pickup) is really nice (less impressive with the J-Bass neck pickup). If I had not have been able to get the Jag SS (it's no longer produced) I'd consider the new replacement 32" Jaguar or one of the two Mustangs (Squier or Fender, which differ in their pickups).
Great review. Thanks. I just bought one off Craigslist and couldn't be happier. I've bought a lot of guitars in the past in the 1500+ range that I had no business owning since I totally suck. LOL. For bass, just wanted something that could stay in tune and learn on. This bass just works.
I have a bunch of nice guitars and suck too. It's sad haha. But yeah, I -really- didn't want to do that with a bass. This thing just rocks enough to get the job done :) Glad you're enjoying yours!
Yeah these Fender Mustang basses are incredible! sound amazing, play amazing and look amazing hehe. I'm getting one of these also for the same reason. I'm a guitar player and singer. I just want an affordable bass for songwriting purposes and to learn more bass as well. And these things are incredibly comfortable for a guitar player to pick up. Fender make amazing affordable instruments. Now also want to get a Fender Mustang p90 guitar as well, because they're so much fun to play, have their own sound, and also very affordable yet still completely suited for professionals as well easily. Fender do such sweet affordable amps now too, like the 007 bassbreaker, that little cute thing is a monster, has kinda this Kossoff vibe. I haven't always been such a fender guy, but lately I really love what they've been doing. Awesome video btw!
Yeah I've been working on learning a little more. Never played bass much so I have a long way to go, but it's nice to have a bass you don't have to battle with while learning.
yeah me neither, I can't play bass very well but it would be nice to learn. I digged the clip where you played some Megadeth, that sounded very good! But even as someone who doesn't play bass the Mustang bass feels fun and easy to play. When I tried one at the store, it felt easy to do bends as well and vibrato which usually doesn't feel too easy on bass. I initially was interested in a Mustang guitar because Norah Jones plays a beautiful original 64 model. I ended up really loving the p90 model at the store though, and it's affordable so that's what I'm gonna go with. I normally play Les Pauls and I have a Jackson RR1 so the mustang is something very different for me and very fun to play. And then I tried the bass model also and fell in love and realized that it could be a good investment for songwriting, like you said when you wanna put some bass down as well. I think you got a very nice one! I actually love this color as well. I think I'll go for the red models just because that's the color of Norah Jones's one lol. and yeah the pau ferro goes with some colored bodies better than others. Looks good on yours. I don't remember if the pau ferro strat felt dry like you described, but I'll keep that in mind next time I try a guitar with a pau ferro fretboard. I just remember that neck feeling very smooth and very solid. Apparently pau ferro is a denser wood so maybe that's why. felt really nice to play, great touch on that strat! felt a bit like an ebody fretboard a bit to me if that makes sense. Maybe some lemon oil will help make it less dry. some rosewoods sometimes feel dry as well.
sorry for these long messages lol. But also if you check other reviews of this mustang pj bass even professional bass players seem to really love this particular model. Over here in Finland it's around 550€ new which is similar to dollars, so 400 dollars was a good bargin for this! glad you finally found the right bass dude
No prob, love the detail! Yeah, next time to try a Pau Ferro let me know. Curious if its just this piece of wood, or typical of all fretboards out of the material. And yeah, it was on sale at Adorama, I think they're similarly priced here in the USA around $550.
Yeah I'll let you know next week, I'll probably visit the store again to try some amps. I think we also lucked out with getting a mustang bass now since they come with the extra jazz bass pickup and three way toggle switch that mustangs usually don't come with. ttyl dude! You make awesome videos!
gotta still add, that I agree that pau ferro can look very pretty! and I've read that it's actually a slightly dearer/more expensive wood than rosewood. SRV had pau ferro on his signature strat. I tried a strat with a pau ferro fretboard the yesterday for the first time and it felt amazing to me, felt harder, very smooth, and the grain had a beautiful pattern to it. I'm excited to get my first pau ferro fretboards with those mustangs! I'll be quiet now lol. (hyped for mustangs atm)
Yeah it's certainly nice and smooth and depending on the color of the guitar, it might look better than rosewood in some cases. I didn't try putting some oil on it, but like I mentioned it felt a little bit dry if that makes sense.
The Guitar Pit Did you ever end up oiling the neck? If so, did it help? I’m very interested in picking one of these up, but I definitely know what you know about the dry feeling pau ferro.
I have a squier jaguar bass with a 30 inch scale and I love it. When buying a cheaper instrument is is better to buy like I did off the shelf so you can try it and see if it works for you. I see there also being less potential for issues with the neck due to the reduced tension.
@@TheGuitarPit I know what you mean although I paid 180 for this one. I did try it against a talman ibanez and a epiphone SG bass. The talman had issues just not good sounding or that good a player the SG was pretty cool but old school in sound and a bit more. I normally like Ibanez stuff too but Squier won that.
@@TheGuitarPit That is exactly what I want/need. Something decent with a short scale neck. Plus I got offered one in 'as new condition' for £300. Got to be worth that
I just bought a Squier Mustang bass INSTEAD of a Fender because 1) It’s CHEAPER than a made-in-Mexico Fender. 2) It’s nearly, if not equally, AS GOOD as this Mexican-made Fender model (yes, I HAVE played both) 3) Finally, MOST IMPORTANT, The Squier bass doesn’t have that NASTY little in-the-way SWITCH on the lower bout, which is a real PAIN for some people to avoid hitting with their hand while playing! The Mexican Mustang GUITARS have the SAME crummy switch, too! If you’re living on a “Pandemic Budget” right now, you might want to take a 2nd look at The Squier Mustang bass. I just bought one, and it is PERFECT! Plays GREAT with NO PROBLEMS whatsoever & it was VERY reasonably priced!
I am a bass player by trade and still struggle with full sizes, I at least prefer a medium scale length personally because I have sausage fingies.... love the review man!
I'm still rockin this thing a couple years later. It's held up well! Still highly recommend one if you just want an easy to play, decently made bass. I'm no bass expert, but it delivered on what I needed it for!
i wouldn't put anything but polymerized tung oil or boiled linseed oil on the fret board ; lemon oil is scented mineral oil ;which is a great way to get a filthy fret board

I couldn't either. Really not sure how he got one for $400. I bought a floor model from CME for $675 with a set of flatwounds on it and it's a nice bass!
I ordered one in white and sold my long scale. I find it uncomfortable for long scale but I like the sound of it, with this short scale I don’t know yet.
I just picked up a MIM Mustang PJ to go with my American Pro P. If you're on the fence, absolutely try it. While the Mustang probably doesn't sit as well in a studio mix as the P, it sounds SO GOOD live & solo. It perfectly nails more modern bass line sounds (Billie Eilish Bad Guy, etc).

But for 400, man might give one a try.
Wow, vintage for cheap seems like a steal. Yeah I bet this thing is a total turnoff for actual bass players but for someone like me it fills the gap. And like you said, it feels like cheating playing on that short scale...I love it. I think this thing shines for people who don't really care about bass but just need to check that box once in a while.
No, it'd be perfect. It's still fairly thin as far as necks go. I don't own a lot of basses to compare but it's pretty normal, and the shorter scale makes it much easier to play. I'd give it a shot...this video is old and I still use the same bass and enjoy it. Turned out to be great!

@@TheGuitarPit Phil Chen, who played with Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart, Manzarek-Kriegar of The Doors, Brian May and Eddie Van Halen, Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton and other greats, would be proud of you. Phil Chen is a self proclaimed Jame Jamerson fanatic. He heard that Jamerson once claimed that he never changed his strings because, "The dirt keeps the Funk". That was all Phil needed to hear. He owns a 1963 Fender P bass with La Bella flatwounds and he hasn't changed the strings since 1966. He still plays it. I once heard him talking about boiling his strings, but it wasn't clear if he was talking about his P bass strings or one of his other basses.
The E string is definately strung wrong
Victor Wooten is very upset with you
As he should be. Jaco's ghost is on his way to kill me right now. Thankfully, I don't claim to be a bass player. Or a very good guitar player, either :)
Sinister Minister is rad though
