As for scent control... Clint Locklier told a story about one of his teachers yrs ago who made a point to a student about being too worried about scent control. To everyone's surprise the instructor peed on the set, and the next day there was a Grey Fox in the set. So it seems that scent control is not as important as blending in your set to make it look as natural as possible. I wouldn't piss on a set myself but it is an intetesting story. Do the best you can and usually it is enough. God Bless my friend. 😁👍
A lot of good information for just being a dude. Thanks for sharing John. I'm a big guy like yourself and have always struggled with my weight. Don't let it get you down. Saw a preacher the other night. He was on a roll for more than 3 hours. But you could sum it up with this. Who are you in Christ and who does He say you are, not what men say. Keep the faith in every thing that you do and you will bless others.
John , I live not too far from you , ( Scioto ) and the coyotes are getting thick around the whole area .. I havnt trapped in over 30 years but I still remember a few things .. Just a suggestion , grab a large leaf and place it under the trigger pan then another over the pan then dust it with the surrounding top soil you removed from the set .. I also used a straight piece of old auto exhaust pipe to " Core " the bait hole .
We call that hay wire here John we have sprig tension cable snares here they work great I don't trap but I have friends that do and on that fence line it would have worked great and what I've seen for a foot hold trap try to make a funnelled set up with branches and put your bate at the back and the trap far enough back so it has to step past it to get to the bate I hope I helped good luck and God bless.
Looks like you have a good set there. I haven't trapped in years but the old timer who taught me showed me a trick that helped. Put a small stick 1/8-1/4 inch diameter right before the trap running across the path. A dog will intentionally step over the stick and put his foot dead center on the pan.
Great clip. I didn't understand the problem you've had with snares. I uses both and in fact the area where they go under your fence wire would be a perfect place for a snare. I liked how you did that bate hole, it is very similar to how a fox would bury a food stash. looking forward to seeing how well your set does for you.
Big John, i mix ashes from a spent fire with the peat moss n or soft dirt, sand, to bed the trap. "otes" can't resist smoke smell for some reason. lil tip if your not catchen.
good job, man.. in NH, coyotes hides are sold to people that provide them to a few Native American Tribes for wardrobe in ceremonies, dances, etc.. it has to have the head, tail, and all 4 paws.. 10 yrs ago they were gettin' a $100 bucks a pop..
you are correct snares are a 1 and done question have ya ever used waxed earth in place of the peat i find it works better but im in new england where we get a lot of freezing rain witch would soak, freeze and render a trap inert
at that duck under you can hang a snare around 9 inch loop and one to two inches off ground. put a twig about two inches of the right of your snare and that post will take care of the other side. The fence duck under spots produce k9s like crazy and all you need is a boiled snare.
Hey just a friendly tip..I'm not criticizing your trapping skill or anything but I use different gloves when I put my bait in bc coyote has one of the best noses out there and I've had them dig up my traps bc I used the same gloves on my bait and trap now I use 2 sets of gloves
Put some castor an a couple drops of tonquin in ur bait will add a curiosity factor to it also.been makeing my own lures an baits for 20 some years..like to try some shoot me ur address an I will send u some

It looks like your manbeard grew about 6" in the last month. Awesome!
John I think you can grind up bones and use around tomato plants like bone meal that they sell in the stores.

Hey, John! It was nice to see your a-salt & pepper rifle. Glad you still have it.

Not sure about Ohio but some states don't allow setting of snares on fences.

John,
Do you mark in some fashion where you set the traps? Ole forgetful me would probably lose a few forgetting where I set them.
So you boiled your traps and such, did you boil off the stakes and the rest as well?
anothe tip to help pan covers i use a leaf some use a latev sheet so on it keeps the dirt peat ect out of the pan for freer operation
How do you remember where you sat your traps? Do you take a picture or tie a small piece of cloth high on a tree or what?
That's fascinating!
Is there a bounty for the game you intend to catch?
Hey just a friendly tip..I'm not criticizing your trapping skill or anything but I use different gloves when I put my bait in bc coyote has one of the best noses out there and I've had them dig up my traps bc I used the same gloves on my bait and trap now I use 2 sets of gloves

Good Luck Brother
How many traps did you set?
You are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!11
Hope ya get him......
hears an idea for the bones boil till not pink then pas round to elders of the creek who have dogs the dogs will love ya
Do you night latch your traps?
I have a couple, but usually not........................J
Way cool dude!
slow cook the bones until they are brittle then take a hammer and crush them up and fead to the chickens , just a sugestion , i havent tried that yet
do u ever go fishing???
For the trap is triggered, which has remained free land trigger, protect with leaves
Feel a lil bad for the cayotes, but they im sure if you left em theyd be getting all your chickens.
Put some castor an a couple drops of tonquin in ur bait will add a curiosity factor to it also.been makeing my own lures an baits for 20 some years..like to try some shoot me ur address an I will send u some
Bones,, hmmm

Why don't you eat them?

Good luck!
