It feels like an appliance, so numbing to drive you just want it to be over which sucks because I love driving. It's comfy and very low effort to drive I guess? Will take some setting up to make it less annoying. Drove a 2016 2.7 petrol manual hilux for a year and felt wayyyy better to drive like im actually connected to the road. These things, carry your tools, carry your mates, tow your boat or trailer and drop your kids off at school when they are running late. You don’t have to wash them and you can dump any shit you have lying around at the skip.
    Reliable and capable , without the fuss. If you want a proper 4 wheel drive , buy a Pathfinder or a Landcruiser.
    If you just want a Ute, save yourself $11 grand and buy a DMax , if you must.

    I don't get the argument of "Toyota is still improving reliability of their hybrid system, and remote commercial operators need to learn to fix them themselves" as reasons why there isn't a full hybrid HiLux. The system has been around for decades in millions of Prius', Camrys, Lexus', and US Klugers, doing hundreds of thousands of kms in taxis, so it is well proven, and so has been plenty of time for miners etc to stock parts, and operators to learn to service them. Even just introducing HSD as a separate model like every other Toyota, or in higher-grade consumer HiLux models that don't often leave cities, would still allow choice and a transition. Waiting at this point is simply reluctance, and is creating a chicken and egg excuse.

    • @drivingenthusiastaustralia
      @drivingenthusiastaustralia  4 месяца назад +3

      I disagree. I think Toyota knows its customers well and I think it has purposely gone for a mild-hybrid setup. If this was a full hybrid, it might scare away some traditional buyers (which there are many), particularly those depending on these vehicles in remote areas. I don't think those buyers want complexity or sheer economy. They want dependability.

    • @CMurdoch-n3t
      @CMurdoch-n3t 4 месяца назад

      @@drivingenthusiastaustralia Fair enough. Different people have different priorities. I just feel like at least some could be willing to risk maximum dependability to choose one for the fuel savings, given how popular other hybrid Toyotas have become, and how many Hiluxes they sell. It's the lack of any hybrid choice, despite roaring success with other models (and the relatively minimal difference now that there is a mild-hybrid attempt) that stands out, and makes it seem like Toyota is moving too slowly in a world of climate change.

    • @drivingenthusiastaustralia
      @drivingenthusiastaustralia  4 месяца назад +1

      @@CMurdoch-n3tYeah I get what you mean. I'd like to see a proper Toyota hybrid HiLux as well - they could do it best if they tried. But considering how big the company is, I'm guessing they can see stuff that we can't. They would no doubt have a (massive) team of accountants that analyse what is going to work best for the current time and in the future (both for customers and for their revenue, which goes hand in hand). I'm not trying to stick up for them, I just think the reality is huge companies like this don't usually make decisions lightly. Toyota has always been conservative when it comes to rolling out dramatic changes. Yet, it was the biggest-selling vehicle brand in the world in 2023, 2022, and 2021. It must know what it's doing? Maybe now is not the right time?

      @@drivingenthusiastaustralia Agreed, I think there will be enough resistance in the bush to even the mild hybrid let alone a full hybrid. And hybrids aren't as good in many Hilux duty cycles such as towing or long distance touring anyway.

      @CMurdoch-n3t 4 месяца назад

      @@mahcooharper9577 Definitely not ideal use case, and may not get the number of sales Toyota might want. But I struggle to believe no one, including those not living in the bush, would want one, and once you start selling them, word gets out and the reputation starts building. Just because there is resistance to introduce doesn't mean you shouldn't at all, if you know it ultimately will stack up. And even doing highway speeds, other Toyota hybrids still seem to get some savings.

    🚗 just for the strange people on here being critical of a hilux,
    On my remote trip to northern Australia I met 2 people with a Dmax and they both had issues with the car. The roof tiler I know had blown 2 turbos on his dmx just using it for work, and my friend who bought a Dmax for something different after only ever owning a hilux changed back to a Hilux after only 1 year. Didn’t like the dmax.
    I’m not sure where this illusion that a dmax and a Ranger are on the same quality level as a Toyota.
    It’s just not true at all. Especially the ranger, my mechanic says they are rubbish.
