  • For nearly a decade, off-duty Stockton Firefighters have traveled to the California Training Officers Association Symposium to teach a class on 'Vent-Enter-Search' (VES). The Symposium is a week long annual event consisting of classes and hands-on-training for California firefighters; always hosted by the Fresno Fire Department. This year, Stockton Firefighters taught 'VES Under Live Fire' at a drill site by the Clovis Training Center. The 7 person Stockton cadre spent 8 hours last Sunday building out the drill site with props and training aides for the class. The 20 student class started Monday morning and participated in two days of drills. The drills focused on getting the students as many reps as possible. The cadre consisted of Stockton Firefighters with a range of 5 to 20 years of experience.
Vent-Enter-Search is an operation that occurs away from the primary entrance on a working structure fire. While the first firefighters on scene of a fire should always focus on establishing a working hose line to the seat of the fire; the firefighters in charge of Search may be forced to finds other means of entering the structure. If fire conditions slow progress or if there are reports of victims trapped in a specific area, a crew of firefighters might employ VES to enter a back bedroom to search for victims. That Search Group would begin by breaking the window and clearing the sash. One firefighter would enter the bedroom window, isolate the hallway door, and search the room. The second firefighter would wait at the sill (likely with a thermal imaging camera) and communicate with the searching firefighter. This can be a low frequency, high risk operation that needs to occur as fast and complete as possible.

We are proud to regularly participate in the Training Symposium, and pass our practical knowledge onto others.

Very interesting. I like that the students are encouraged and allowed to repeat the exercise as much as they want, when I went through my combat arms training the instructors were just waiting for you to make a mistake so they could yell at you and punish (students are suppose to make mistakes...no?), I think positive feedback works much better then negative.

I'm not a firefighter but I'd love to do this. Not everybody is cut out for it I feel. This training seems critical to save lives and save yourself in a fire

As the buildings become more complex and less fire resistive, our “safety” directives make it increasingly difficult to train under realistic conditions. Kudos to the Stockton FD and this cadre team for finding a way to make these evolutions as realistic as possible given the challenges the regulators are putting on us.
Unless firefighters are able to train regularly in realistic situations and buildings, we are going to suffer needless loss of human life.
We must stop allowing gear and equipment manufacturers to dictate how we train. It is their job to design and manufacture the things we need to effectively save lives and extinguish fires, not to dictate our limitations.
Moreover, it is incumbent upon the members and leadership of the fire service as a whole to return to placing the lives we swore to protect first. This job is no place for participation trophies or diminished standards.
Stockton is one of very few agencies in the US who is able to show just how effective that type of value system is when combined with actually doing the necessary things to train, equip, and enable their crews. They should serve as model for others to follow.

Is this an academy class? Only ask as the turnout gear is yellow, and I know Stokton FD uses black turnout gear.

As a Stockton resident who has been through a house fire I say Thank You to the Stockton Fire Department. You have an amazing team out of your station on March Ln and Feather River Dr. I am great full for everyone in the fire department around the country and the world. What they do is next to impossible in some situations. My dream was to be one of these great fire fighters but my body gave me limitations that kept me from that dream. You all rock and kick ass in my book.

We gotta start teaching FFs to use a TIC to scan the floor prior to sounding it. If there's a victim by the window, we're gonna put our tools right through them.
