I feel some Loctite could have prevented this. I found that most of the screws on my Talaria had not been loctited and were installed either too loose or were way over torqued. I will definitely be checking the gearbox hold down screws and taking the appropriate measures to secure it better. Thanks for the video!
@@MotoAlias After seeing this video (ruclips.net/video/KnUpxW_N2kg/видео.html) from Oregon Motorcycle, I am assuming my suspension bearings are worse than I would like, so I ordered the Gritshift linkage and triangle. My head tube was bad like Oregon Motorcycle's as well but I caught that earlier. I will replace the gearbox bolt when I install the Gritshift parts soon. It looks like a tight squeeze in there otherwise.
Do you think the bottom bolt rattled out before the top bolt sheared? This would make more sense why it sheared, if the bracket was being pulled with one bolt in and the other bolt gone. Thanks again for this video. This is great to know about
So it's more of a maintenance item than a defect. Inspect and tighten as needed. Good looking out, I'll have to go over my bike before my next ride. TBH, all new owner should drop the fork and lube the needle bearings. Inspect all bolts, Loctite and tighten where needed.
a bit of lock-tight may have prevented that. easy fix tho, just tap the hole to a larger bolt and add a touch of lock-tight. should be fine. for how much the bikes stand up to this kind of riding i wouldnt say boo talaria just yet
Just looked at my MX4 and my bracket is way different. It has two allen key bolts up top and two more down low. All eith lock washers. Maybe they improved this with newer models?
I’m seeing more and more videos of this with the talaria sting. Cheap bolts, bolts not tightened, over tightened, no lock tite. If they went cheap on something as important as the bolts that hold it together, what else did they go cheap on.
That's an interesting find. I'd imagine there could be room to improve the design or add an additional brace within aftermarket. I guess that's the benefit of the KO box. Someone could develop a different case cover with additional bracing apart of the casting or billet. A replacement or more sturdy secondary brace from the pinion sprocket around the gear box which prevents or reduces the elastic deformation fatigue through the case, could also assist. The bracket on your bike looks like a developmental addition found during testing phase of prototypes. How much power were you running through the motor?
Ouch. Do you run your chain real tight? I know a lot of guys like to do that with these bikes. It puts a whole lot of stress on that area, especially when it gets dirty and it gets even tighter.
I'm studying failure theory right now. Just on a hunch it looks like that could be fatigue failing even with the bracket in place since the lever arm from the motor output face to the chain drive is so long. It's possible it cracked and failed prior to the screw shearing. How many miles / hours are on this bike?
It's a surron fender that I mod to fit the Talaria. They don't sell the one I have anymore, but this is the closest I could find to it. GritShift Extended Rear Fender V2 Sur ron Segway (Fender w/ Shrouds) a.co/d/20JXeDZ
Wow, that was not cool, less parts = less points of failure. That really sucked, having it fail in middle of water crossing at spectator spot. You will have it better than before with an upgrade for fellow Talaria riders. Keep up the great work. Electric is Better!!!!!
Was about to buy a Talaria for racing but am now on the edge about this bike. Is this an easy fix or is there an easy/cheap way to reinforce the gearbox so this sort of thing doesn't happen?
Terrible design , I’ve shattered two in the last three weeks by way of chain derailment. I’m redrilling and tapping for larger bolts along with making a case saver. Very surprised this hasn’t happened to more bikes.
@@OregonMotorcycle ebikezilla has everything. First one I just needed the casing , this one had to get new gaskets, dust cap, brace , and casing. Also had to file down the gears a wee bit.
I would guess the bottom bolt came loose and fell out,,, it was just a matter of time before the upper bolt rattled loose, and in a very short time, the cast aluminum gearbox gave up the ghost

I just checked my bolts. The top bolt is there but the bottom one is gone. Thanks for posting, you saved my gearbox!
My bottom bolt is gone too. Have you figured out how to replace the missing bolt I can't get to it

Eh yea true but I ain’t got time for all dat 😂 I just charge and go 💨

Pre start checks are vital 😮😮😮
Funny how you destroyed your gearbox right after you announced the KO gearbox 🤔😊

Charged Cycle Works has a video about this now. they say def as soon as you get your Talaria loctite that bolt, mandatory.

Stock power. So I was surprised this happened. Just my luck, it's probably the only bike ever shipped where they forgot to put lock tight on this bolt
@@electricisbetter I hope so!!!
@@electricisbetter no, they forgot a lot of stuff during assembly…
good post. this will save others gear box.
Cheers I'll cheek that bolt today,I have titanium bolts on order
Does this happiend on the sting r or just the normal sting?
It was taking a light duty bike into a heavy duty situation, Talaria Sting of Reality!
Ouch. Do you run your chain real tight? I know a lot of guys like to do that with these bikes. It puts a whole lot of stress on that area, especially when it gets dirty and it gets even tighter.
The output shaft sits on the same point as the swing arm.
@@OregonMotorcycle Regardless. Tight chain exerts an extra stress on the sprocket shaft. Basics of motorcycle maintenance.
Dude that sucked about the gearbox splitting damn she really split glad nothing else major happened man👍
Talaria should give you a new gearbox
They probably will. It’s under warranty still. But I think he has something better in the works

Did you sort a bracket if not I can design and make one out of billet
Mine was a little bent but i got it back on fine.
You sure the bracket bolt didn't come loose first?
The bracket bots did come loose first is what I was saying

In short, if you're going to race, replace the screws.
Don’t let this scare you. This bike has been through hell. You’ll be a pro at replacing belts if you race a Surron.

The design is actually quite simple and ingenious. The problem was the cheap ass screw. Replace it if you're riding like EiB lol.

Lock tight should be applied to all critical bolts
