  • In this episode, we start shaping all the cleats that we have carefully fitted into the front to support any cracks. We used soft and light wood, so shaping the cleats is an enjoyable job. We plane them down and finish them to about 1mm as they only need to be thick enough to provide coverage to any cracks.
Many cleats are fitted to areas with curves. When shaping, it is important to follow the curves so that the cleats are the same thickness all across. You will see that the cleats vary in length, with some of them being bigger and others being smaller. The small ones perhaps only cover one crack, and the longer ones cover several cracks.
Once we have reached the cleats' desired thickness, they are sanded down and have the ends chamfered off with a chisel.
The following job is to fit the bass bar into the front, and then we are almost ready to glue the double bass back together.
