  • Jon Spencer is best known as the leader of The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, one of the most noteworthy bands to come out of the 1990s wave of alternative and indie rock. In 2017, Spencer's music was introduced to new audiences when film director Edgar Wright utilized the Blues Explosion song "Bellbottoms" as the soundtrack to the opening car-chase scene in Baby Driver (Spencer also made a cameo appearance in the film as a prison guard). Though the Blues Explosion and Boss Hog--a band Spencer formed with his wife Christina Martinez--are still sporadically active, Spencer went the solo route in 2018 with the album Spencer Sings the Hits, which features M. Sord on drums and Sam Coomes (Quasi, Sleater-Kinney, Elliott Smith) on synths. For the subsequent tour, Spencer added Bob Bert (Pussy Galore, Sonic Youth, Lydia Lunch) on percussion. While in Houston for a concert at the House of Blues, the band visited Houston Public Media to record "Ghost" (from Spencer Sings the Hits) and "Dang" (off the Blues Explosion's landmark 1994 album Orange).

    I'm a ghost
    too
    even more invisible
    than 600 views video
    about a ghost
and between men I'm nothing special
simply someone who you just missed
despite the fact that I've overtried
    writing this sheet
